Official Smash Ultimate Discussion

Almost one month has passed since release. In retrospect....

  • This is by far the best Smash ever. Like, I don't even know how they will top this.

  • Pretty freakin' good; I have a few qualms over things like internet play, balancing issues, etc.

  • It's ok, but [insert Smash game here] is better.

  • I'd rather play Parcheesi.

There's a question that comes back regularly in speculation for the next Smash game: which third-party character inclusions would reach the same mind-blowing level as :snake:,:sonic:,:4megaman:and:4cloud:ones did?

I still think of Lara Croft, but I could have some doubts.

I think most of them really. Unless a given company is heavily involved with Smash like it was for Pac-Man or got leaked early like with Ryu.

Then again, depending on how high the number of third parties get increased in future Smash games, I guess there may come a point where they may end up being received about as much as any other Nintendo character, unless said third party is truly something out of left field. Like a character that never appeared on any Nintendo consoles in any way or form or something....

But that's probably just me.

Ignoring my own personal biases, the closest I can think of that belongs in that category would be a popular character that hasn't made any sort of appearance on a Nintendo platform. Then again, I remember there were people who ignorantly believed that Smash 4 was Cloud's first Nintendo appearance.

I really want to see Smash move away from serious anime characters and more towards cartoony/outlandish characters.

Anime-styled warriors are fine and all but I want to see more zany types of characters. Like a car from Stunt Race FX.
A car from Stunt Race FX? You mean like that one time Sega made a fighting game with a car as a playable fighter?

FF7 is on Switch now right? I don't think Cloud complaints are justified now. Is the game actually anything good, and does it live up to the PS1 version? Curious, cause I might pick it up if I'd get a Switch.

Also I think Banjo-Kazooie would still probably be the best received and one of the bigger shock factors if they'd be included. Especially cause of their history with Nintendo. And if I where to guess, I think Sonic might even get a second character next time. Namco is also likely to get a next character in, but I wouldn't know who they'd choose.

It's not on the Switch. If you're talking about the remake, it's not even out on PS4 yet. (I believe it was implied it would come to systems other than PS4, but I don't believe they've stated which ones)

No, it isn't. There was a time when people were expecting the remake to be ported after Cloud was revealed, though.

Well, I want a Final Fantasy 7 remake on Switch... and that it uses the Cloud amiibo.

I think if FFVII was on the Switch it'd be pretty big news.

Namco is also likely to get a next character in, but I wouldn't know who they'd choose.
Sakurai expressed interest in Heihachi but I could also see Nightmare (Soul Calibur) happening.

It's not even out  I just thought I read it somewhere that the game would be released on Switch. Also think it should happen actually. Would be a good decision business wise and Smash might be the reason.

Also, I just posted in the Impa thread how a fusion between Smash, Pokken, Hyrule and Fire Emblem Warriors would be actually a cool thing. I wish they would translate characters over from game to game. How Warriors works could give an idea for 1 Player Mode. And the gameplay would be ground combo heavy but with Smash's traditional Special Moves and smooth aerial combat. Ryu already proved how this works in Smash. I think it has potential and would guarantee massive sales, interest to other gaming markets, and a massive amount of new characters. But the idea might sound too elitist for Sakurai or Nintendo, and I'm not sure what roles items could play. But an idea could be to make a Smash based spin off with this idea in mind? A sort of elitist Smash game, and the main Smash being far more traditional, and basically be a Smash 4 port with loads of extra content.

Not even the upcoming remake, but if they release just the original version on the Switch, that would be both amazing and a good way to shut :4cloud:'s detractors' mouths up (at least a good chunk of them).

The original? I don't see that happening. But the new one sure. Switch is getting a lot of support from third parties suddenly.

And seeing as Namco also worked on Pokken, I could see potential in a true crossover between fighting games and Smash. What about Smash Warriors after Fire Emblem Warriors? Smash Kart was also hinted at. It has a whole lot of potential, and I hope they use it.

And her moveset! But yh she needs more Nintendo fans liking her and a port to the Switch which will only happen if Square is willing to publish it there according to PG.

Off the top of my head, Steve (Minecraft). He's obviously not as requested as those characters before him, but he's also a massive name that could catch everyone off guard, exactly like those guys before him.

Yh I'd say Lara too.
Maybe a certain assassin too. :p (especially if somehow Ezio comes in before Rayman does)

Off the top of my head, Steve (Minecraft). He's obviously not as requested as those characters before him, but he's also a massive name that could catch everyone off guard, exactly like those guys before him.
I honestly do think this is a possibility a lot of people sleep on. Minecraft is one of the best selling games of all time and a cultural phenomenon, and as of last year (or was it late 2015?) is finally on Nintendo consoles. It's also well-known the world over.

Add in the fact that Steve could bring in a moveset involving crafting weaponry and terraforming, and it really seems like a no-brainer. Honestly if it wasn't for the fact that the IP was owned by Microsoft, I'd say Steve would be the single likeliest third party character. Granted, I don't think this is AS big of a deal as some do, mainly because Minecraft is on Nintendo consoles despite this, but I figured it was worth a mention.

I think Rayman is most likely. Next potentially a second Sonic character, probably Knuckles.

A lot of people would care about Steve. I would not be one of them. But... he is a big name who has potential for an interesting moveset. I'm not adverse to the idea.

As I've said before, I think the next two characters that would further the "Sakurai can get anyone" line of thought would be Banjo and Sora. Not that they would be the only characters to create shockwaves like those listed above, but they'd certainly be among the most notable examples.

That's basically where I am with Steve. I'm definitely not requesting him because I have no investment in Minecraft, but his merits (namely moveset wise) make him an interesting choice to me.

And if Sakurai ever got the rights to Sora, I think he'd be arguably the world's best negotiator. :p

I just really really hope if Nintendo is going to negotiate for Steve they'd throw Banjo in as well at that point... but obviously I have my doubts.

You can give me five more ****ing FE characters and Baby Metal Dr. Dark Pit if I get my bear back.

And yehhhh, not expecting Sora... like... ever... but would definitely enjoy seeing the internet explode and meltdown should he ever make it. I'll settle for KH3 on Switch. :3

Sora in smash would be a dream come true. Please?

Also Minecraft Steve would definitely be one of, if not the biggest shows. Minecraft is ginormous. The fact Minecraft switch is already on the way is a nice point in his favor.

Steve would be a character I would legitimately hate showing up in any shape or form.

That being said, I cannot deny that Minecraft being as big as it is and showing up on Nintendo systems despite being a Microsoft property at least gives the idea some credibility, even if I would rather not be able to play Smash ever again than see Steve in it.

I don't care about Minecraft or what Steve could do in Smash but I do see he has a lot going for him...

(I'm hoping it does't happen, at least until I get my 3rd party wants first cos I'm selfish that way :p)
so Rayman and Lara.
anyone else I said I support is cause I think it would be cool addition and are the ones I would want after these 2, but don't feel any real desire right now.

I like Minecraft don't like Steve

For many, Minecraft is a "kiddy" game plus being so popular makes people want to be hipster towards it. Some just don't care for it.

As for Steve, he isn't particularly interesting to some since he is a mute avatar character with no personality. Some possibly assume he would just be another sword user and nothing more. Plus, he is from a microsoft series (sort of) and many nintendo purists are still around

Personally I just think he is a boring dude
I'd rather have Master Chief tbh.
I agree with this sentiment

The game probably because it's popular. Which is dumb but how things seem to go. Steve is a relatively bland character, even as far as a series like Minecraft goes, so there's a little more validity to that, but still.

I don't hate either. I don't have any interest in the series, but I don't hate it. My nephew loves it. I'm glad it (finally) came to Nintendo systems and I think it's smart that it has exclusive content and is releasing early on the Switch.

I'd rather have Master Chief tbh.

That's not untrue but it's pretty hypocritical especially if that sentiment is coming from Nintendo fans.

I do not hate Minecraft nor do I hate Steve.

I do however, hate the idea of Steve being in Smash. He has no business being there.

I have yet to try Minecraft, but I know how big/iconic it is at this point so I think Steve has merit and that there's a genuine case to be made for him.

That being said I'm pretty much indifferent to the idea. I don't want him, but I wouldn't mind if he made it in. If he did make it in though, then I'd hope Microsoft would throw Rare fans a bone and let Nintendo use Banjo & Kazooie as well. Never played Banjo either, but I'm actually in favor of him given his origin and history with Nintendo.

Steve's got the benefit of at least three outings on a Nintendo console between ports of the base game and Story Mode. Plus Minecraft's ridiculous, continued and definitely long lasting popularity.

But honestly I think there are third parties with way more business being in Smash than him.

Steve from Minecraft? Eww... I'd rather have Urban Champion as a playable character who is still an 8-bit sprite in Smash unlike Duck Hunt and Ice Climbers... and he summons 8-bit sprites of other NES characters to assist him, effectively making him the NES Remix character... especially when his Final Smash, Ultimate NES Remix, is Urban Champion and other NES characters temporarily becoming 3D and ganging up on the opponents like Shulk's Final Smash.

Make it happen, Sakurai.

Funnily enough, back during Brawl's days, I wanted Ayumi Tachibana to be the "retro compilation rep". I don't know why I settled on her having that sort of role, I guess I just couldn't think of anything to use from her games back then. I've long since lost the file I had it in, but I do remember that I had her summon Tamagon as one of her moves, along with Bubbles and Muddy Mole. Can't remember what I gave her for an up special though.

I came up with the idea of the NES Remix character when I was thinking of how to top the WTF-ness of Duck Hunt, R.O.B., and Mr. Game & Watch.

Since Sakurai is okay with taking stuff from other game series and giving them to characters... Balloon Fight balloons for Villager, Mappy trampoline and Galaga beam for Pac-Man, and Hogan's Alley cans and Wild Gunman outlaws for Duck Hunt... I figured it might be okay to have a character who uses stuff from several NES games if that character represents NES Remix.

And I thought that it would be funny if the rejected NES characters like Urban Champion, Balloon Fighter, Excitebiker, and Bubbles joined forces and crashed the party as the NES Remix rep. They weren't invited to join Smash so they are still 8-bit sprites unlike Ice Climbers and Duck Hunt.

I'm not really too fond of the game. I can see why others love it but it has no appeal to me in the slightest. Digging and crafting isn't really my idea of entertainment.

I'm surprised to see no one bring up the fandom when talking about why they hate Minecraft.

Not like the worst sides of the Sonic or Smash fandom are any better.
