Official Smash Ultimate Discussion

Almost one month has passed since release. In retrospect....

  • This is by far the best Smash ever. Like, I don't even know how they will top this.

  • Pretty freakin' good; I have a few qualms over things like internet play, balancing issues, etc.

  • It's ok, but [insert Smash game here] is better.

  • I'd rather play Parcheesi.

I don't think any of the Pokemon reps we have in Smash 4 are gonna get the ax. Pikachu's the mascot of the series and a member of the original 12, Jigglypuff is also a member of the original 12, and Mewtwo, Charizard, Lucario, and Greninja are all popular; all four of them are still featured in promotional material to this day, with the former three even getting Mega Evolutions.

There's arguments that could be made for all of them. The only one I see potentially getting cut is Mewtwo, and even then it's only because we don't know how the DLC characters will be treated going forward.

The fact that some people even consider Goku an actual possibility makes me sick. Please just stop, it's not even funny anymore. Super Smash Bros is all about Nintendo and a few third-party guests from VIDEOGAMING HISTORY. Anime and manga can have it's own Smash counterpart.
Sorry if it seems like I'm overreacting but it literally makes me sick. Let the meme die already.
If it literally makes you sick, go see a goddamn doctor.

Clearly you have too much venom in your system.

Any thoughts on new Pokeball Pokemon?

My guess:
*Diancie
*Yvetal (?)
*Alolan Gen 1 Pokemon (maybe Raichu or Geodude)
*Litten
*Popplio (please don't be a Piplup clone)
*Tapu Koko
*Maybe another Tapu
*Sogaleo
*Mimikyu
*Bewear
*Togedemaru (plz no)
*Pyukumuku
*Lycanroc
*One of the ultra beasts
*Gen 3 Mega (like Mega Salamence)

I'm really rusty on my Pokemon post Gen 6, so I don't know who is really featured in the anime or what Game Freak pushes in the game.

I really don’t think they will cut Lucario but it’s a possibility. It just seems pointless to cut him when they can just have both a new pokemon and Lucario since I’m sure Sakurai wants to avoid cutting characters especially relatively unique ones such as Lucario
Isnt Lucario the posterboy for Megas though?

I may trigger people by asking this, but
If there was going to be a character in Smash who isnt from a video game franchise, but originated/ was seen for the first time in a videogame, who would you want?

If a character originated in a video game, it doesn't matter what else they've been in, they're a video game character.

If Mario only ever had his game on the NES, and everything else was just stuff like the Super Mario Bros. Super Show, he'd still be originally a video game character.

Isabelle is a front runner IMO.

Isabelle is probably one of Nintendo's bigger stars, and definitely one of the biggest from last gen.

Only way I don't see her getting in is if Sakurai thinks she doesn't have any moveset potential after Villager.
:061:
MM hmm.
Plus, seeing Isabelle fight would be a fun sight to watch.

I remember Opossum saying that only Villager representing the Animal Crossing series is "dangerous". It is dangerous, considering Animal Crossing is much more than Villager.

I honestly only want Isabelle to be in Smash for Switch as an Animal Crossing newcomer.

Tom Nook is much better off as a trophy than a fighter. Tom Nook should stay a part of Villager's Final Smash forever, considering it fits the Final Smash and Villager's Final Smash fits him well.

All right, I wanna play a hypothetical for a second because I am genuinely curious.
So it seems that a lot of people want three things from this new game:
A whole host of new characters.
A unique and balanced roster.
A massive roster.

I'm gonna be blunt here, there's no way all three will be equally as accomplished. It is a two out of three scenario. We're either going to get a massive Nintendo game with a bunch of newcomers, or a reasonably sized fighting game with less new faces coming in. So I wanted to see how far I could push these ideas and came up with two scenarios:

Would it be better to focus on veterans coming back, or having more newcomers?

Likewise, would it be better to have more newcomers, at the cost of more veterans cut? Or more veterans, at the cost of less newcomers?
And when I mean veterans, I mean this include characters who are also generally considered to be safe. Olimar, Zero Suit Samus, Sheik, I could even push it with characters like Falcon, Ness or Marth. No one is safe apart from those already revealed (so Mario, Link and Inklings).

They’ve never cut a character who has been in two Smash games unless there were tech issues. In my opinion, anybody getting cut would be from Wii U/3DS. I also find that crazy and am thinking there may be hope for no cuts if i’m right in terms of the development of this game.

I'd honestly rather have all the past characters back (minus a few unworthies), and only a few quality newcomers.
I'm hoping they've been able to re-use assets to the point where this isn't a problem, but hey, I'd love a Smash with everyone back :p

I mentioned this somewhere before, but given what I've seen if people want all veterans back including lets say 10-15 new characters, I'm looking at a roster of around 70-75 or so (From Smash 4's 58). That's already a massive roster in of itself, and I'm assuming people also want DLC on top of it.

Including this, I know people want a wide and varied cast. I remember when people flipped their lid when three clone characters were on the 50+ roster. People also want more balance, which was something Smash 4 struggled with. We had a massive cast sure, but it meant certain characters overdominated others. Compare the toppest tiers and the lowest tiers and you'll see a major divide.

Now that doesn't mean we can never have zero cuts. But even with a two or three year dev period a 60 veteran roster is still massive. And would probably give us maybe five newcomers at best. If we even get everyone back.

So again, it leads to what is more important. Do we want veterans or newcomers more?

I might consider getting cut-happy if that was the only way to get more newcomers. Depends how many we're getting to begin with. But there's plenty of other content I would cut first, like custom moves, Stage Builder, or a robust single player. (Except trophies. Bring on 1,000+ trophies to collect, and make it time consuming PLEASE)

Somehow I doubt it as, considering the amount of FINAL FANTASY content we have in Smash 4, it was pretty costly to include it.
Where's your basis for that? There wasn't a lot so therefore it was expensive? I don't get the A to B.

I don't dislike Gen 1. I grew up playing Gen 1. I am nostalgic for Gen 1. But I also know there are other gens and we should see a bit more balance with newer gens coming out.
The thing is that, adding in characters introduced in the beginning, doesnt make it unbalanced.
They are the most recognizable bunch, who are constantly relevant in the newer generations.
The original three starters, for example, are obtainable in Gen 1, Gen 2, Gen 3 (with Fire Red and Leaf Green), in Gen 4 (Heart gold/Soul silver), Gen 6 (getting the originals back), etc.

Generations mean absolutely nothing. As you can see, you literally play through kanto in the first four generations of Smash.

Other pokemon from Gen 1 are also constantly relevant. Meowth and Pikachu are the mascots of the anime, always relevant. Mewtwo has had several movies and changes to his line throughout multiple generations.

Talking about generations as if it matters, other than "new generation" being a given, is ridiculous, because its ignoring the actual facts of the games.

"GEN 1" means nothing. At best, you mean Kanto-born. And why does that matter when the characters are relevant in the games and stories in almost any generation?

It's completely unnecessary to have balanced playable representation of Pokemon Generations just for the sake of it. That's what Poke Balls are for.

Sorry Opossum.
I want Isabelle just as much as you do, that is what I thought you said. :p

Since the Switch is more advanced than the Wii U, I am hopeful that there were no cuts. I really hope Sakurai and his team do not make cuts. I love all the characters in Super Smash Bros. Wii U.

But clearly, if Villager is the only Animal Crossing character in Smash, we are at risk of being killed. :p

Do people consider Strider Hiryu to be a video game character? Because the character actually had his own manga series first, and Capcom made a game based on the manga that came out several months after the manga's debut.

I'm very curious to see what people's thoughts on this are.

That's simply not true. You can make a completely brand new game by using stuff that's already been developed for previous game. It happens all the time.

Hell, take Mario Tennis Aces for example. That game is 100% brand new and it reuses all of the character models from Ultra Smash and then updates a few like Mario, Luigi, Wario, and Waluigi.

Your claim that the only way all the veterans can return is if this just a direct port is based on nothing. It's an unsupported claim.

Now that doesn't mean we can never have zero cuts. But even with a two or three year dev period a 60 veteran roster is still massive. And would probably give us maybe five newcomers at best. If we even get everyone back.

This is all just assumptions based on nothing. Why on earth would they remake every character from scratch after they literally just got done supporting the last game.

We're not jumping from Wii to an HD console so what is the point of making all the characters from scratch. How many characters have changed over the last two-four years?

With all these Wii U games being passed off as Switch games, you think they would have to make everything from scratch and also somehow manage to do it in TWO years?! I mean they could. But, why? They just got done making perfectly good character assetts that could easily be passed off as Nintendo Switch models AND they are characters people love, want, and EXPECT to return.

Why wouldn't they just use what they already made as a basis to create a new game? Not to mention with all these Deluxe/Definitive Edition games, even though Super Smash Bros for Nintendo Switch is a sequel, people are going to be expecting the characters to return from the Wii U & 3DS version. Especially when the last characters added to the game were 2016. That wasn't very long ago.

And the 3DS is still being supported. People are still buying and playing Super Smash Bros for 3DS. Why alienate consumers and fans by cutting characters from the 3DS version?

People will be torn between going for the version of the game that has the characters they like better and possibly passing up the Switch version for the 3DS version. That's the whole reason Smash for Wii U & 3DS don't have exclusive characters to begin with.

But, I digress. The point wasn't that you said they wouldn't do this, but that you said they CAN'T do this. So why not? Why CAN'T they reuse assets from the previous game like SO MANY games already do?

Honestly, if it were up to me, i’d keep more of the vets and introduce fewer newcomers. But that is most likely because I really only want a small handful of new characters anyway.

I’m all for new characters, but as of right now I can only count a small handful of characters I definitely want. Again, that’s me.

It's really upsetting to see you all talking about cuts when we haven't even seen footage of the game. I don't know why you're all so eager to jump on this.

There's a 90% chance they reused all the character assets from the last game which makes the fully capable of bringing back all of the veterans.

And that doesn't make it a PORT. I'm so sick of this black & white discussion of "Either it's a port or it's a new game". You can make a brand new game by porting assets over from the last one. It happens all the time.

Cuts are a hard thing for people to talk about. Literally every character in Smash, regardless of which game they originated in or how much you personally may dislike/hate them, will still have a group of fans that love them and would be upset to see them cut. Yes, that includes Dark Pit. So try and be aware of other peoples feelings please :)

Now while it does seem that from past Smash games we can not fully expect every character to translate from the previous entry, it is very difficult to tell exactly who would be cut form the roster. The argument that if it is a port that we will have more veterans staying simply does not hold up either, every Smash game has built upon the engine and content of the previous entry. Brawl had artefacts from Melee and Sm4sh had them from Brawl. This will be a new game built upon Sm4sh just like every other Smash game.

The reason characters may be cut from the roster is simply due to how development progresses and whether they decide that more time should be put into crafting fun and unique new characters, or to fully adapt veterans to the new game. This is not to say both can not happen, it is just that most cuts happen due to issues in development (i.e. Mewtwo from Brawl due to problems with Sonic).

I have yet to see a time where Sakurai has reused assets, or at least in a way that wasn't drastically altered for the new game. Like even the 64 stages had their textures altered to be HD.
So... yeah.
I highly doubt we'll see major assets reused.

Case and point, Smash 4 borrowed a lot of stuff from Brawl, from animations to file locations.

I think what could be a more constructive, and less toxic argument, in regards to what may or may not return in this Smash game is: which stages could you see returning or being cut for this game?

Obviously we will get this games version of Battlefield and Final Destination, but from the WiiU stage selection I could definitely see Temple return as well as most of the DLC stages, aside from Miiverse (rest in peace you meme filled mess).

Yes, but keep in mind this is small potatoes. Like when we talk assets here (at least from the conversation I'm seeing), I'm seeing most if not all the content from Smash 4 just lumped into the new game.
Characters, graphics, audio. Correct me if I'm wrong but it sounds like a Smash 4: Ultra Edition.

I do not think that is what people are expecting, well not me at least. Characters will definitely be getting new renders and models for this game, but they (in the case of models) can definitely be built upon Sm4sh.

It would honestly be a stupid decision on Nintendo part to go to E3 and reveal "Haha guys, sorry for hyping you up for months the Switch version of Smash is just a souped up port of the WiiU version, sorry for teasing you with new characters and graphics. Have fun kids!" There is no way that would be well received in any universe.

Plus, this would mean that they have been wasting Sakurai's talents and skills on porting a four year old game when he could have been doing something new and creative, which just sounds silly.

I mean I wouldn't mind it. The only thing that would irritate me is the past stages being treated as modern stages.

It was so distracting to have these beautiful character models that don't match the lower graphical quality of the locations that they are fighting in. It made sense to reuse stages if you're gonna cut corners to bring back as many characters as possible, but it just got so unavoidably distracting.

I WANT past stages. But, don't make them appear in Classic Mode and preferably have them separated categorically. Switch > Wii U > Wii > Gamecube > N64. Now that's a lot of stages.

Beyond the veterans, music, and stages returning, I would assume there's gonna be a new menu screen, character select screen, main theme, new modes, etc.

Everything you would expect from a brand new smash game, with the exception that most of the characters look the same, minus the ones they updated like Link.

Yknow I always wanted a customizable Classic Mode or All-Star Mode that allowed you to pick and choose what stages appeared and what stages don't.

Wanted it ever since Brawl because of All-Star Mode, specifically its second stage; I'm OK with fighting on 75m but I ****ing HATE Rumble Falls.

I agree. I think it'd be really weird to have the teaser trailer we had, the new logo, lack of a subtitle, etc., if it really was just Smash 4 Deluxe. It seems like there would be a pretty significant backlash to that. Is it still possible that Smash Switch is an enhanced port of sorts? Sure. But I'd be quite surprised if this ended up being a Mario Kart 8 Deluxe situation.

I think the thing that might be throwing people this time round is Nintendo's new approach to announcements and release schedules with the Switch. They seem to have made it very clear that will we have very short periods of time (comparatively) between the reveal of a game and its release, with the longest so far being Fire Emblem, which was only announced last year. I think that this is a good thing as it does not leave us in a BotW situation where we waited for a game for five years and it allows the developers to go about working on their game without have to worry about trailers, questions and press releases.

Really? It's the opposite with me.
Really I just can't stand sidescrolling stages in general. They're just not fun to play on. Having a way to have them be toggled on and off for things like Classic Mode would be a godsend.

Plus I can't tell you how many times that ****ing spike KO'ed me when I was little :p

Am I the only one who doesn’t mind scrolling stages? I mean, for sure I understand why people don’t like them from a competitive standpoint, but for a little multiplayer havoc, why not?

Am I the only one who doesn’t mind scrolling stages? I mean, for sure I understand why people don’t like them from a competitive standpoint, but for a little multiplayer havoc, why not?
I think you might be. To me they just take away form the actual gameplay of Smash. That and, well, I have never liked auto-scrolling stages in any game be it Smash, Yoshi or Mario.

If nothing else, gotta give props for Rex and Pyra for always stirring up a disussion, be it about spoilers or design or timing haha.

Then again, speculation is running thin. Please let us have something before E3.
I just personally think neither spoiler content and designs regarding Xenoblade should ever be mentioned as well lol.
Well if Pyra DOES appear she's gonna get a changed design. If Bayonetta needed added leggings then Pyra ABSOLUTELY needs to change
I personally don't think and hope that won't happen, but hey, this is speculation anyway, so you aren't wrong. And if she does I bet wil just be a minor tweak like Bayonetta (which are the parts where we wouldn't even be paying attention on) , so don't expect any significant changes I guess.

I’m just starting to play the other characters in Xenoblade (primarily Zeke as he fills the same party role Rex does in my team). It really brings wishes that this game had multi screen internet multiplayer and I could actually set up a party. And I think when I get to new game plus I’m going to essentially just play constant Tora.
Cool idea, but I don't think that's necessary though.
If Sakurai gets accused of Xenoblade bias, I wouldn't be surprised.
Same, and sorry but I wouldn't be mad if that happens, just please don't go overboard Sakurai, just put Rex in Smash and I am a happy man.
Both Xenoblade 2 and Smash WiiU are Pegi12.
Just throwing that out there.
I am curious on Smash 4 and Xenoblade Chronicles 2's CERO rating lol.
Then again I don't think ratings has to do too much with this, just saying.
Ah, I see now. I guess since I don't really pay attention to Bayonetta, I didn't know she did have a difference.
See? Lol, even of there is chance it wouldn't be too significant (like how Tokyo Mirage Sessions #FE did.. )

I feel like Pyra's outfit was not the major push. Praxis, Kora, Dahlia, Perun's jello-chest, Sheba's "harem" of women, and things like people being visibly impaled in cutscenes were more likely the discerning factor in the bump.
Vale has that too as Perun's....
Newt's overall designs, despite my favorite eh... No thank you.
Zenobia I actually do think she will get a significant tweak of I do say myself if she will be in Smash as one of Rex’s blades. Her attitude fits as a criteria for Smash so, hope she gets in, but needed some big changes in my opinion.

That being said all of this is just speculation guys.

Why not all three? Sakurai isn't some random amateur and Nintendo isn't a small company on the verge of bankruptcy. If they need to expand the size of the dev team to help keep up with the roster they will do without question. After all Smash is a moneymaker for Nintendo and a large roster helps sell the game better than a small one. And let's not act like Smash is this super complicated game that requires thousands of hours of balancing. It's not. I have little doubt that Sakurai, armed with the experience of Smash Wii U's development, without a second version to worry about and with access to Nintendo's resources, will be able to bring back most if not all of the roster, balance it and expand it further.

No one is saying x should get cut because **** x supporters. We needn't placate people just because they may like some character if that causes us to disregard reason. Every time the conversation turns to cuts for more than a post or two someone pops up and reminds everyone to stay mindful of feelings, as if debating cuts is just people ****ting on characters instead of acknowledging a reality of the series, and like with do with every other area, trying to predict it.

Are we so thin-skinned that someone simply espousing a fictional character may not return in a game they're doing nothing more than envisioning is a matter of personal upset? People need to stop conflating a cut with an aspersion. And if someone is saying 'cut so-and-so because I don't like them', I'd hope we'd have the good sense to see the erroneous logic there, not seriously entertain it, and be able to distinguish it from the typical rhetoric surrounding cuts, which is that they're just part of the territory, as to which many here have attested. I guess predicting newcomers might be more "fun", but predicting cuts is no less important (for however important any of this is), and shouldn't be bemoaned literally every time it occurs. Ignoring cuts won't make them go away, and discussing them doesn't make you some hater or pessimist.

I think y'all might be a little over-invested in things if simply discussing cuts is an emotionally unstable area to tread through. I mean my favourite character is the one that may be the most frequent subject of conversations regarding cuts, and if I took it personally, I'd have driven myself up the wall by now.

And this is coming from someone who does think there's as good a chance as ever that we actually won't get cuts this time due to Smash Switch being some mid-step kinda thing.

That's fair. I was not trying to suggest that we can not discuss these things, it is just that it seems that when we discuss cuts it always devolves to "clones should be cut," or "cut this character cause they do not work well" and it just is not really constructive in terms of discussing this new Smash game.

I have a list of characters that I feel do not need to return in the next Smash game and I am pretty sure that I have stated whom they are at least a couple of times in this thread. It just seems kinda unnecessary to revisit this topic again at this stage I guess. But then we come to the problem of what to discuss now since we are already foaming at the mouth for more information about this game :dizzy:
