Official Smash Ultimate Discussion

Almost one month has passed since release. In retrospect....

  • This is by far the best Smash ever. Like, I don't even know how they will top this.

  • Pretty freakin' good; I have a few qualms over things like internet play, balancing issues, etc.

  • It's ok, but [insert Smash game here] is better.

  • I'd rather play Parcheesi.

The most iconic generation that has continued to reexert itself over time?

I mean, Pokemon don't represent their generation, they represent themselves. Pokemon in gen one are in every other game too, and the ones included, short of JIgglypuff, have continually proven to be integral to story elements.

Disliking gen 1 because they are from the original game is not something Sakurai seems going to do- we got three gen 1 born characters in Brawl! Other than having a new character in each time, the generation seems mostly irrelevant to Sakurai.
I don't dislike Gen 1. I grew up playing Gen 1. I am nostalgic for Gen 1. But I also know there are other gens and we should see a bit more balance with newer gens coming out.

I can't believe people are still pretending to be unsure that it would be Spring Man.

I'm gonna be honest, I wouldn't be surprised if we didn't get an Arms character or a Pokemon Switch character.

It's one thing when you add a character to Pokemon or Fire Emblem before the game is released, but it's another thing when we're talking about a new IP.

As for Pokemon, there's probably going to be Sun & Moon Pokemon in the game so it would make more sense to have a Pokemon from that game which people have already experienced and loved. Just like there was a Fire Emblem Awakening and not a Fire Emblem Fates character in the original game. Having a Pokemon from a game released three years later than Super Smash Bros started development just seems unlikely.

I’m not nearly as sure about an arms character as everyone else seems to be. I’m in no way opposed to them but, while sakurai adds new characters from the current console for already represented franchises (robin greninja etc...) sakurai has NEVER added a new series unless it’s at least one console back: olimar (GameCube) doesn’t show up until brawl (Wii) Wii fit trainer, Miis (Wii) don’t appear until smash4 (Wiiu) and now inklings (Wiiu) get their start in the New smash (switch). Now if years of smash speculation has taught me anything it’s that that there are no “rules” to who’s gets included and following patterns is often pointless HOWEVER this particular pattern makes some sense... adding a new Series to smash prematurely could be a very bad idea because instead of having to cut a character later down the road if The series doesn’t have any staying power and gets forgotten quickly sakurai will have to cut an entire series (character stages assistrophy ect...), something I assume he wants to avoid. This happened with snake but that was a third party character and a special circumstance. Now arms is very popular and seems like it will be a worth while Nintendo franchise with future sequels and will be remembered fondly, it’s not guaranteed and I could see sakurai waiting til next time or even DLC to make sure a year or two after release it’s still popular the way splatoon has remained popular and gotten a sequel ect... I wouldn’t be surprised at an arms character but I’m much less sure they’d are a shoe-in like everyone thinks for this reason.
What this guy said.

Last post on Pyra's outfit in Smash I swear.
The E-10+ rating for Smash 4 did note some of the mildly suggestive trophies as part of the game's review.

Other than the removed Tharja trophy, this is basically the skimpiest I found, but Krystal's shows more cleavage.

... We have? Pichu was in Melee, from Johto. There was Lucario in Brawl, he is Sinnoh. There was Greninja in Smash 4, from Kalos. We basically just missed Unova and nobody outside of the most contrarian fan is going to cry about that, and Hoenn, previously. But realistically, those were more timing problems, than anything. I bet we will get a Gen 7 or 8 this time around. Like, what more balance could you want outside of just cutting some of the most iconic Pokemon of all time?

Yeah that's a fair assessment, something I didn't really consider, but I think ARMS is particularly significant in its style of gameplay. It's a fighting game with a very unique approach, and there's no doubt in my mind that Sakurai, whenever he heard about it, looked at the series and thought about how well a character would translate into Smash. Whether it was too late or not is another question, but considering ARMS came out nearly a year ago and was very likely in development during the character selection period I still consider Spring Man to be one of the most likely newcomer candidates.

Just adding a Gen 7 or most likely Gen 8. Possibly drop one Gen 1.

I wonder if Bayonetta being available from the get-go this time, with guns, could cause a rating conflict with the ESRB wanting to push it to M.

The only issue I take with it is that "pattern" is from over a decade ago, more less, with few examples and plenty of exceptions. The fact that we are getting another Smash, two years after the Wii U version, to capitalize on the Switch hype, drastically changes the circumstances. It is not as though every series represented in the game is completely banger. Splatoon sold over 4 million, they were not waiting to see anything. They were waiting to have a big character to add to a game that they were already developing. Occam's Razor. That is the problem with all arguments against Spring Man, they are all super presumptions, cannot really be backed up by evidence, and most importantly, counter-intuitive. It also maintains the old assumption that Sakurai decides to the roster. Lmfao. Whatever.

I don't get the Gen 8 expectation.
"A mainline Pokemon game is in production. It might take more than a year to come out, please be patient." is all we have on it.
Gen 6 got revealed in January, and Gen 7 got played up until its February reveal, with the trademark leaking a bit beforehand.
We're at late March without a PEEP of this game.
Even Gen 5 was announced to be hitting a 2010 release date in January, even if the games' titles weren't unveiled until early April, and was in an era before the kind of mass information services we've seen TPC use for about 5 years now.

I do not consider it an expectation as much as I consider it a possibility. Beyond that, I bet it has less to do with expecting the generation and more to do with expecting something BIG for the Switch and that was all they could come up with.

It would be like skipping Awakening in Smash 4 and going straight to Fates, a game that wouldn't be released for another 3 years after the roster was already decided.

With Sun & Moon in 2016, and Ultra Sun & Moon in 2017, it's only logical they would go with a Pokemon from those games. Especially when all of the Pokemon in the game are going to be from that generation.

I don't even know if we'll get a Fire Emblem 2018 character, let alone a newcomer at all.

So far I still hold on to the belief that most veterans for this upcoming Smash won't have their models/designs drastically changed from Smash Wii U. I'd probably expect them to look a bit more detailed this time around, but who knows. Of course, veterans with complete redesigns such as Link are the obvious exceptions.

Now, that raises the question of what characters besides Link will get redesigns. Personally I nominate the Villager getting their New Leaf designs over their City Folk ones for this game.

Either way, I honestly feel that for this game they'll likely stick with Smash 4's "artstyle," so to speak, considering the majority of Smash fans feel that it's a happy medium between 64/Melee and Brawl's styles. That is the reason why I believe that development-wise there will be miniscule reason for cuts from the roster.

Really? Based on the silhouettes? Fox changes nearly every time, and Pikachu has been on weight watchers during the duration of this series. He always looks a bit different, at least. Beyond that, from the shadows, we can see Samus in a Prime-esque suit again and naturally Link implies Zelda also has BotW (I will not believe it until I see it, personally) and Bower's silhouette has definitely changed as well. And that is just based on precedent and the visible ones. I have to imagine that indicates most characters will get a face-lift, at least the older ones.

Please tell me thats a joke. Theres no validity in a claim for m based on bayonetta. Maybe T but that doesnt mean much considering the game series has been T before and the best selling one is T.
Id like to shift the conversation from character changes to mechnics changes. If the game is heavily based off 4 then theres little to no chance airdodges change but id like some modifications on ledge trump so the player on ledge cannot buffer a get up and id like to see the magnet effect either reduced or only apply to certain characters at all.

It's incredibly likely they started the game as soon as the DLC was completed, or possibly earlier, and just used what was already built for Smash for Wii U, with some veteran updates of course in terms of moves, designs, and costumes (for characters like Pikachu and Jigglypuff for example). So similar to how assets are reused from Mario Tennis Ultra Smash into Mario Tennis Aces, the very same thing most likely is happening here.

It's only been two years since Nintendo stopped supporting Smash for Wii U with content. People are going to reasonably be expecting these characters to return. Otherwise fans might end up recommending the 3DS version.

It's kind of process of elimination here. There's no way they starte an entirely new Smash game from scratch immediately after the last game was released in 2014, I mean they did with Melee, but that was a much smaller game, and there's no way they could have done it in time for a 2018 release if it the characters were made from scratch in 2016.

That's not to say every character will return for sure. Maybe Wii Fit Trainer, Shulk, or Corrin will be absent. Who knows? But, I think it's very bold to claim that there will be cuts at this point.

I really wish people would just wait for more information before talking about cuts and debating whether or not it's a port. Though it's pretty obvious this isn't just a Deluxe port. If it was they would have a title for the game.

If Sakurai was gonna do this, we would have done it when Villager was announced. While New Leaf and Smash were in dev during the same time, i think it was choice to go with the Small City Folk Villager instead of the Taller New Leaf Villager imo.

I would be opposed to it only because it would be a step backwards in regard to making the game feel smooth.

Arguing over Pokemon newcomers for Smash is like arguing over the best generation. 10% the game is better, 90% it's the first one I played.

I will say, some are significantly more likely than others, but once you get out of that very likely territory, anyone's guess is as good as any other's, and it's really just dependent on any moveset potential Sakurai sees in them.

I'd like to see recoveries nerfed across the board.
With ledge hogging gone, there was no reason to also immensly buff the average recovery distance.

That's not how the M rating works lol.

Titles rated M (Mature) have content that may be suitable for persons ages 17 and older. Titles in this category may contain intense violence, blood and gore, sexual content and/or strong language.

If you look at my mains, all of them use edge guarding in a big way, and other than Roy, heavily use off-stage edge guarding. This is one of my main complaints about Smash 4, off-stage edge guarding, my favorite part of the game, is almost non-existent.

These next few months are going to be rough. I really hope we get some info sooner rather than later. Like every Direct should have some Smash news.

I am sure that they will; however, the only problem is, there is probably not going to be many Directs prior to e3 in the first place.

As for Pokemon, there's probably going to be Sun & Moon Pokemon in the game so it would make more sense to have a Pokemon from that game which people have already experienced and loved. Just like there was a Fire Emblem Awakening and not a Fire Emblem Fates character in the original game. .
Technically, we already experienced that with Greninja. When he was picked, no one except the internal teams at GF/TCPi knew about him and it was mostly through concepts, and he was far less established then any Gen 5 Pokémon was at the time. Yet, despite all of that, Sakurai decided to go with the unproven option since it'd be the most recent at the time of release.

Granted, there's a smaller gap between Smash's release and Pokémon Switch's then there was with Smash 4 and XY, but there's past precedence for Smash to go with a character people have much less experience with over the one they do. We can't pretend Greninja was picked for being a beloved character when at the time of his pick none of us were even aware if we were getting a Gen 6 game at all.

Speaking of Fox and Falco, I really hope their voices are better this time. Especially Fox's.

I'm pretty sure their voice actors remained the same going from Star Fox 64 3D to Smash 4 to Star Fox: Zero, though they sound a lot better in the latter since they aren't straining their voices as hard. Hopefully Sakurai lets them go with Zero's voices.

What I wanna see in this game.

  1. Jeffrey Manning or Dean Harrington as the announcer
  2. Melee Style Adventure Mode with branching paths
  3. Less random Classic Mode (no more 8 Player matches)
  4. Accessible Debug Mode (Play as Master Hand, Metal Mario, Giga Bowser(
  5. Trophies from Nintendo Anime (Pokemon, Kirby: Right Back At Ya!)
  6. Content from EarthBound Beginnings, Wario Land, Star Fox 2, Super Mario Odyssey
  7. All custom moves available from the start
  8. More costume characters (Ninten, Leif, Impa, Ms. Pac-Man)
  9. Alph as a separate character
  10. No more past stages unless they are listed by the game they appeared in
  11. No more Flat stages or Tour stages
  12. More characters from obscure gems and relics
  13. Return of Wolf and Pichu
  14. Better unlockable characters
  15. Palutena with a bath towel costume :colorful:

How many of those things you actually think are likely? I'm gonna guess maybe 3. 4 Max. Agree with most of them though.

Alright let's play a game. I'm gonna list the 5 Gen7th pokemon that arguably have the most chances or people usually request the most to be playable, and you can only pick 2, the two you'd personally LIKE the most:

-Decidueye
-Mimikyu
-Bewear
-Lycanroc
-Zeraora

I'm going for Bewear and Lycanroc for the lols.

Roy's game was released mere months after Melee. Greninja's game was released a year before Super Smash Bros 4.

Fire Emblem 16 is possible, but a Gen 8 Pokemon is a ludicrous proposal. Super Smash Bros for Nintendo Switch likely started development in 2016. That's THREE YEARS before Pokemon 8.

I think all those changes would make it unbalanced as well, as everybody with a hitbox could edgeguard everyone,
I think Brawl recoveries with Smash 4's ledge mechanics and unlimited airdodges would make off-stage edgeguarding a risky, but rewarding and feasible option.

Brawl's gimping system was stupid because edge hogging was, but they not only removed edge hogging but also tripled the average recovery distance, which really makes off-stage endeavours worthless, which is a shame because they can be such a thrilling part of the game when edge hogging isn't a stupid catch-all option

If we're talking about potential, then Decidueye wins. There's also Poipole from Ultra Sun & Ultra Moon. Lurantis would be cool too. I want Primarina most of all, but seeing as we have Greninja, that's probably unlikely.

Greninja was from a game released before Super Smash Bros. Not AFTER. And I didn't say Greninja was picked because he was a beloved character. So what the hell are you talking about?

If Smash was started in 2016, then Gen 8 Pokemon concept art probably didn't even EXIST.

Smash 4's roster was decided in 2012. Pokemon X & Y was released in 2013. If Smash 5's roster was decided in 2016, and Pokemon 8 is released in 2019, that's a three year difference compared to Greninja and Roy. That would be like expecting Corrin to appear in the original 2014 release of Super Smash Bros for Wii U & 3DS.

I think all those changes would make it unbalanced as well, as everybody with a hitbox could edgeguard everyone,
It worked in Melee and PM.
Also I like the way you can reverse grab ledges ONLY at the peak of you :GCU:+:GCB: in PM, and would rather have that than reverse edge grabs in Smash 4, but it's not that big of a deal.

And Sakurai would still be working on characters. And he also has the ability to contact the other teams of Nintendo so he would likely know about stuff coming out. He works in the same company after all.

And with Smash 5 still in the works and Fire Emblem 16 practically out by the end of the year, same as Smash, and Pokemon Switch/Gen 8 on its ways to at least be revealed at E3, chances are very high for both.

Belmont or Takamaru could have meter that is filled either with timed whip attacks or katana attacks.

The meter upgrades their projectiles as it is filled.

Any source for this?

The game has not even come out yet, I am very curious about that.

Uuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuhhh...Have you seen footage of the game? They are all the exact same models used in Mario Tennis Ultra Smash. The only difference is the the bros have new outfits.

What do you mean "any source for this"?! Go look at it.
