From a PR standpoint, if the leak was fake, why wouldn't Nintendo just come out and say so? Genuinely curious, I'm no specialist in PR, but to my naive mind this seems like the right thing to do when misinformation spreads like the plague and may jeopardise their publicity. Especially considering the fact that fans may end up disappointed for no reason afterwards due to a fake leak that has been allowed to spread.

They get free publicity either way. Either way, those characters aren't going to all be in (assuming it's fake) so they're better off letting it roll and then letting the developers decide what to make of it for themselves. It's like how none of the developers said anything during EVO, but, Sakurai made a comment on how a lot of grand finals were stuck in Animal Crossing music in one of the interviews so he wanted all of the arrangers out of that.

plus, if they answer to one popular leak, they gotta answer to them all. And no answer will be seen as "It's real". The best move is to not play at all.

tl;dr: Free publicity and there's no advantage to coming out.

The problem is that the leak is a dream come true, so people desperately want it to be real and will convince themselves that it is real, in spite of any real evidence that it is when all we have is a blurry picture and the identity of someone who may or may not actually exist. But they want it to be real, and there's just enough reasons to believe that it might be, therefore, they convince themselves that it is real, and anyone whos says otherwise is just a hater or something.

Not to call anyone out, but look at the Shantae thread. It was pretty small until the August 8 Direct when Shovel Knight was announced as an Assist Trophy. To most people, that would mean that Shantae's chances are shot, since Shovel Knight is way more prominent (and even has several Amiibo), but the people in that thread took it as validation that Shantae was not only likely, but definitely going to happen, and then the thread exploded from ~50 pages to now 500 pages all in a little over 2 months. I've even heard it said that Shantae is the most known and popular indie character there is, more than Shovel Knight. It's slowed down now that every single leak with any potential of being true don't have Shantae in it, but it goes to show how just wanting something can convince people that it objectively makes sense.

Apparently someone on GameFAQs recently said that Geno was a more iconic character than Lara Croft. I like Geno, and I haven't even played SMRPG yet, but come on.

I really wanted Dark Samus, but I never for one moment thought that she was a probable character, especially after Ridley was shown off. Metroid gets so little love as it is, and Dark Samus hasn't been requested nearly as much as Ridley, let alone most other characters, so I thought there was no way Metroid would ever get another character. Then there was all the evidence that Dark Samus might be a playable character, and I still didn't fully believe it, just because of how unlikely it was compared to so many other characters. Yet I got lucky, and here we are. It still doesn't make sense to me. I'd never say that Dark Samus is a character that has to be in the game or is of any major importance.

Some people just have trouble trying to look at things objectively. I want the leak to be real, too, just because it's better than the more reasonable expectation that we're only getting about 2 more full fighters and two more Echo Fighters. But the way I see it, there's not enough tangible evidence, and it contradicts the statements of the one guy who's been consistently correct about what's coming, so it's by no means confirmed, and I'm leaning more on the side of it being fake.

It's definitely nothing to get at each others' throats over. And if this leak is fake, then it's all the more sad, because this is exactly what fake leaks are designed to do.

And if Geno/Banjo/Isaac/Shantae/Shadow/Ken don't get confirmed, then their supporters should at least take solace in the fact that their characters are some of the most requested anyways, so they're more likely for DLC than most other choices. My other most-wanted character is Chibi-Robo, and there's no way he's getting in, so rejoice that your character has a large fanbase that can support the character enough to get noticed.

Poor guy. I sent him a PM with a brief question and apology for the smash community being ***** but he never responded. Probably got overwhelmed with a deluge of ****tiness.

If it makes you feel better, I saw that one of the reasons he went private may have because he said he had gotten new information that one of the things he had said may have been false, and may have went private to prevent further rumor spreading.

Honestly I don't really care about what people throw at me for the Grinch or whatever. I'll just continue to follow what I see and not jump into any side.
Both side have good argument, but they all dismiss each others, and sadly, I feel like always showing argument for the "underdog" (last time was proving Sassy Geno was fake, and now it's defending the Insiders or showing how some """"Hint"""" aren't on the banner)

So, while everyone talk about the Grinch or what-not I decided to do an Edit of my Avatar to make a Sora-Geno.... Just to show that while I'm 100% the Sora guy of this thread, I actually wouldn't mind the puppet (Or any Square-Enix characters)

Tried to keep the Nomura style but probably failed lmao alongside finishing the Crow symbol and removing the TWEWY characters.

The Smash Direct would likely be on the 8th no? So having it announced a full week ahead is unprecedented and quite frankly idiotic.

I personally choose to just "Wait it out and see what happens", but I'm honestly flabbergasted by the effect this has had on the community.

It's really unfortunate. This is the type of stuff that would be amazing to celebrate (tentatively of course), meme about, so long as we treat it like it is--just a video game. It's one of the reasons I was gonna take a break until new info comes, but since it's soon, won't matter anyways.

Oh, so when insiders imply there might be a direct they're all believed immediately and sent positive feedback.

I know I'm late, but I think a key difference is characters insiders have heard might be leak bait, a date for a Direct has a very small chance of being leak bait, because why would Nintendo do that?

It's because the pain of coming that close and having it all just blow up in your face is ****ing bad. Really ****ing bad.

Not that I'm justifying the bad behavior in the slightest. But this is by far the best/worst leak smash has ever had, for the characters and legitimacy behind it.

i mean some of the insider sources might be nintendo employees who want to comment on the leak without having to worry about reggie piledriving them through a table. at least that's what i would do if a fake leak was floating around and the company wouldn't allow employees to respond to it.

this is true. whichever way you spin it, this leak has generated so much interest in Super Smash Bros. if it's complete bull****, you gotta praise it for giving something to talk about, even if we're at kind of a stalemate as far as proving it real or fake goes.
I still think its mostly real, at least in the sense that those character choices are becoming increasingly safe bets (especially Isaac after that item thing).

I've come to the epiphany that if they introduce a character that isn't on the leaked banner, that doesn't deconfirm any of the characters on the banner. The only characters on there that would seem threatened by the leak being deconfirmed are Mach Rider and Chorus Kids imo, maaaaaybe Geno since his chances are kind of in the dark outside of this (which is my main reason for shilling the leak so hard).

those are more like historical and, when it comes down to it, you're making a crapshot. I'm not saying Mach Rider can't happen; I'm just saying that Mach Rider is the standout here - If he's in, chances are, this rumor is real.

Mystic only talked about characters he was confident in, I don't remember anything about him saying he was sure a character wasn't in (so he didn't even bring up Banjo-Kazooie nor Mach Rider, likely because his sources didn't tell him about them, or only a few of them did). He did say he was certain about Geno on his twitter, along with Isaac and Ken, and that Shadow and Incineroar should be in. He said he was certain about Chorus Kids, Isaac, and Ken in a message to IntelliHealth.

Other stuff is correct; the GameXplain guy was Jon, he posted an otter, which he did before other Direct dates.

At this point with these insiders being so coy about this week in particular I'd say Thursday is very likely. I personally think it will be the Smash direct, as a regular direct seems like it'd be pretty sparse to me. Unless they've held off on announcing a lot of games I can't see one happening.
