Official Smash Ultimate Discussion

Almost one month has passed since release. In retrospect....

  • This is by far the best Smash ever. Like, I don't even know how they will top this.

  • Pretty freakin' good; I have a few qualms over things like internet play, balancing issues, etc.

  • It's ok, but [insert Smash game here] is better.

  • I'd rather play Parcheesi.

One of the great things about missing out of some games is there's so many "returning stages" that'll be completely new to me.
Same here! I missed 64 and 3DS and those will be completely new so that's nice

On a different note, why are people expecting a direct this month exactly? Yeah, it could confirm or deconfirm "those" theories, but it wouldn't matter since we also got November.
It's more about timing than theories. Nintendo always does the final info dump on their games around this time before release, and we're soon approaching the period where if they want to get stuff out before leaks, they kinda need to do it soon. Preload most likely going live in a few weeks and marketing material needing to start circulating around means that more information is gonna be in more hands, meaning leaks are gonna happen if Nintendo doesn't reveal stuff first.

K. Rool isn't retro, tho.

DK64, Jungle Climber, SLuggers, etc. His current design is only 10 years old!
Someone can gladly correct me if I'm wrong here, but I believe something is considered to be retro when it's about 20 years old or older. So arguably, you can say any game or character released in 1998 or earlier would be retro.

I don't know why it says the direct would be happening at near midnight for japan. Has that happened before?
To my knowledge, no. In fact, one of the reasons Directs are so awkwardly timed for us in the west is because Nintendo specifically times their Directs for their home audience in Japan. The only time a Direct is specifically timed for western audiences is E3.

And such a definition would apply to many of the characters in Smash, including the og's in 64. The idea behind the retro rep was more about when a character was last relevant/active not when they were released. That's why Duck Hunt, Pitt (at the time) Ice Climbers, or G&W were considered retro but not Mario or Sonic

Am I the only one that does not like how 3rd parties seem to be the most rumored/expected characters for both base and DLC? I mean Ken, Geno, Banjo & Kazooie, Steve, Rayman, etc are all 3rd parties and the only prominent 1st party is Incineroar :(

Don’t get me wrong, I like some of those but I don’t want DLC to be mostly 3rd Parties like in Smash For.

I want 1st parties like:
Paper Mario
Dixie Kong
Impa
Bandana Waddle Dee
Medusa
Isaac
Elma
Pyra/Mythra
Octolings

Who is with me?

Yes. Iirc, August Direct was aired at 23 pm JST.

The time difference between here and America is stupidly huge, yeah.
Oh. I guess I stand corrected on that, lol. Thanks for the info! :)

On the topic of a Direct, it doesn't necessarily have to be this month. The first full week of November could still work, but TBH that's the latest I personally am expecting it. With how Nintendo's marketing seemingly works and how they handle preloading, info's gonna be circulating like crazy come the second week of November, as the game will only be a little over 3 weeks away by then.

Plus, I really don't see them pushing Smash super hard during Let's Go's week, as Nintendo tends to focus on one game at a time. Revealing stuff for Ultimate now gets it out of the way and lets them focus on marketing Let's Go for that week, and then focus on pushing Smash closer to its release.

Oh okay, I was just wondering because with most of the other recent directs it's usually around 5 or 6 p.m EST and around 10 am or around there in japan.
Yeah, August Direct was a rare instance. It's usually around 7 am, just like the September Direct.

I remember Sakurai specifically saying he tried to schedule that Direct in a convenient time for both America and Japan, so

Smash 64:
1. Sector Z - The music and sheer size made this stage a lot of fun to play on. It's also in space--bonus points. XD
2. Hyrule Castle - Love how the stage is somewhat cut into three sections that promote different play styles.
3. Saffron City - The chaos in the middle of the stage made this stage a blast to play on.

Melee:
1. Temple - The ultimate stage to mess around/experiment on. So many fond memories of this stage and I am so happy to see it become the mainstay that it is in the series.
2. Final Destination - Easily my favourite version of this stage. This was the stage where all rivalries and conflicts were settled within my group of smash bros. friends.
3. Fountain of Dreams - Beautiful design and music. The platforms affected by weight are also a nice touch.

Brawl:
1. Bridge of Eldin - Awesome location from one of my favourite Zelda games. The bomb splitting the stage into two led to some really tense battles. One of the few walk off stages that I like.
2. Castle Seige - Love me some Fire Emblem. The changing scenery always kept the battle fresh and exciting for me.
3. Halberd - Once again, awesome music, and a really cool background to fight to when you're not docked onto Halberd's deck.

Smash 4:
1. Skyloft - I really liked Skyloft as a location in Skyward Sword, so I was super happy to see it in its entirety return as a stage.
2. Arena Ferox - Basically coliseum, but not a walk-off stage, so waaaay better. I also like the designs of all the different shapes the stage morphs into.
3. Kalos Pokemon League - Really awesome aesthetically. The different forms of the stage also make the fight really hectic and fun.

Ultimate:
1. Dracula's Castle - I LOVE Castlevania, and this stage is 100% fan service. The stage layout itself also looks like it'll be fun to play on.
2. New Donk City Hall - I love Mario Odyssey, and I love travel stages. XD Also really love "Jump up Superstar!" so seeing the vocals for the song appearing in Smash is also a big plus.
3. Great Plateau Tower - The destructible cave of life feature in the middle is going to be interesting to experience. Although I would have preferred a different location within BoTW for use as a Smash stage.

Hmmm, I think Jaquio from Ninja Gaiden could work very well as a boss in Ultimate. Maybe one of the more difficult ones to defeat as well. Not many others I can think of right now.

I have the impression that there's something fishy behind this.
Maybe it's just a Photoshopped Little Mac situation, or maybe not; I'm still taking this with a grain of salt.

The point is that the official screenshot that's supposed to be older, looks better and has more details than the Ken leak, that's supposed to be a recent build (at least in theory).
Unless there are different detail settings depending on if the console is docked or not... but even in that case, there are elements that just don't match and are in a different position, not to mention that probably from that angle you should see a different view.

The mapping of the texture of that quarter ramp in the background is also suspiciously worse in the Ken leak, and still suspiciously, there is no ink in the stage (but that could have been disabled from the debug console).

At this point I think it may not be a coincidence that Pacman is holding that item there just covering a part of the background.

I thought the prevailing theory was that the Ken image is from an old(er) build due to the dev console stuff, the frozen timer, and the missing ink.

I do I do...

Well,
Smash 64 has the most balance in terms of characters. Even the most weakest still have potential to beat other characters.

Melee is unbalance, nearly half of the cast are viable while the rest are trash. Still, even the viable ones still have hard counters. Fox is not that dominant from what you think. He has evens with Falco and Marth and even other lower tiered characters, Jigglypuff, Sheik, Falcon, can still beat him by overwhelming his poor range, light weight/fast fall, and linear recovery. Otherwise, he is still a force to be reckon with.

Brawl is horribly unbalance, Meta Knight beats all of the MUs while Ganondorf loses all of the MUs, even the second weakest still beats him. Meta Knight is terribly broken and Ice Climbers is also really good.

Smash 4 is much more balanced than Melee and especially Brawl. Many characters have the ability to defeat one of the best characters if trained properly. No one has heavy counters. However, Bayonetta arrives and that changes the meta quiet a bit.

I hope Ultimate has the best balance. I want to play other characters competitively without being mollywhooped by better characters. Sakurai and Nintendo clearly focus more towards competitive Smash and I like that. I hope Ultimate is fun and balanced.

The idea that characters from the NES era no longer counts as retro "reps" because of a new game is just a fan assumption. Excitebiker was one of the characters considered for an NES representative in Melee despite the fact he already had an upcoming game that was revealed to people back in May 12, 1999.

At any rate, it feels pointless to discuss the arbitrary concept of a retro "rep" given the main trend of our newcomers being fanservice, especially with the non-echo newcomers. The idea of having a "retro character" doesn't really fit with the concept of Ultimate, especially since Sakurai stated he was referring to the ballot for the roster.

I wish that the adventure mode is between Melee's and Brawl's in regards to levels.

That being each one taking place in the universes of the games that have fighters (not original places like in Subspace), but with character development akin to the one mentioned.

This, once again if anything this leads more toward the idea that this is an early build
