Official Smash Ultimate Discussion

Almost one month has passed since release. In retrospect....

  • This is by far the best Smash ever. Like, I don't even know how they will top this.

  • Pretty freakin' good; I have a few qualms over things like internet play, balancing issues, etc.

  • It's ok, but [insert Smash game here] is better.

  • I'd rather play Parcheesi.

As long as the character did something notable in gaming, I'd probably be okay with them joining Smash. I genuinely don't care which company owns a character, and I don't think characters should be prioritized over others just because people think we need to represent an absent company in Smash.

I know you're reading this. Vote 2B.
I think we've got different meanings of the "father" of FPS.
Well, calling either one of them the "Father of FPS" is insinuating that they created the genre.
That is, unless you're calling Master Chief the Father, and DOOM the founder/Grandfather. Calling Master Chief the Father of FPS outside of that context doesn't make much sense otherwise. It would be better off calling him FPS' star child, or it's second King.

My point is though Halo isn't the first FPS when those three alone came before Chief.
What they're saying is that Master Chief is one of the most influential though, due to how popular Halo is. Doom's huge too, so I can see the appeal for both. Not that Master Chief is happening though, since unlike the majority of the Rare characters be it Banjo, Fulgore, Rash or Joanna, he's owned by a rival console producer AND lacks any Nintendo presence/nostalgia/support, as hype as it would be. Support which even someone like Cloud got despite his lack of Nintendo connections outside of cameos and a port of FF Tactics.

That and no console exclusive mascots had never been on a rival console so...

Have we ever seen Master Chief on a Sony or Nintendo console?
Have we ever seen Mario on a Sony or Microsoft console?
Have we ever seen Kratos on a Nintendo or Microsoft console?

Yeah...
Because why would they port their main game over to a rival console?

Also, you can technically find Mario on PC games anyway, which Microsoft practically runs at some points. Technicalities aside, you do see Master Chief in Minecraft Switch, and we almost had a Halo DS, which even if it came out, it probably wouldn't have changed anything that Microsoft would soon enough own the Halo series. Not unlike what happened with Rare.

Beyond that, there's nothing implying just throwing a guest character in is the same thing as throwing the game itself in. Remember, Sonic was requested by Yuji Naka to be in Melee. Sakurai's reasoning was "not enough development time". There is nothing to suggest that him being a rival company's character mattered at that point. Which was before he not only had a Nintendo appearance, but before Sega actually went 3rd party. So it wasn't as much as an issue as people are saying it is overall. Not to say it won't hurt Chief's chances. He could be denied for that alone. But it's not some guarantee it would deny him either.

Okay. I can understand this interpretation.

Oh sorry guys I can't hear you over the sound of

A day where I'm reminded K.Rool fans moaning about a character with a counter and thar K.Rool could provide more and ultimately get Counter himself is a good day tbh
Yes, because we hated counters and counters alone about Fire Emblem characters.

Alright then, so answer me this.

What if, in a crazy unpredictable scenario, Lara Croft is the second Square rep? :V

Even then Cloud is the face of the Final Fantasy series which has also appeared on Microsoft consoles.

Doomguy never takes off his helmet either but by God, can you feel that one man's intense rage and hatred for demons like no other.

And the original games do have the concession of having a face representing your health condition.

So, why did they bring this series back recently? Anyway, if we get Bubsy, we better get a Bubsy 3D graphic option.
Because Accolade saw the mascot revivals and went "hey, we can do reboots too!" and proceeded to mess it up by expecting people to pay full price for a game that doesn't have much depth to it.

It'd be nice, and it's already clear I'm biased for this one, but I think I'd rather have 2B for that one. Considering Sakurai really enjoyed NieR...

Some other pretty cool, but unlikely at the moment Square Enix reps would be the Dragon Quest slime, Bubble Bobble, Crono, Chocobo, Space Invaders

and going off of what vergeben has said about the square enix rep, there's a fairly good chance it might be someone who's hardly talked about at all and nobody really sees coming.

I mean, cool I guess. People will either go nuts or go "what"
and i'm still gonna main Inkling

:4pacman:
It's a little funny how after all this time and all the reveals i'm still maining Inkling.
I've certainly found many secondaries, and if Incineroar and Geno get in they'll certainly be top of my secondary list, but i'm still gonna main Inkling.
I just love Splatoon so much, and their play style looks so interesting.

Glad for her fans because apparently she's seen as a very unlikely addition. I also consider her to be a pretty big face in gaming, so I would feel like she deserved her spot.

Other than that, not much else to say about her. Third-party characters have never excited me as much as Nintendo characters.

I really like the fact that I can finally play as an Inkling in a game that I'm not garbage in that isn't about driving

It baffles me that people don't think she's likely.

She was the character of the mid-90s, iirc.

The character's a huge gaming icon, so I'd welcome it, she's just not my first choice, or 2nd, or 3rd.

I would prefer the OG version, since that's the version I'm more familiar with, and I think would generate the most hype.

I didn't even like K Rool before but this video changed my mind.
For some reason, I don't see much of a reason to care for him. I mean, more DK rep is fine, but I don't really have a lot of interest in it at the same time. That's just me, though.

Perhaps Master Chief is the father of FPS, and Duke Nukem/Doomguy are the grandfathers. ;)
Seriously, Duke doesn't get enough credit in the Smash scene.

I'd be glad that Sakurai went "screw it" and allowed her iconic guns as an exception to his No Realistic Fire Arms with Bullets rule.

Watch that Smash gives us the DINO (Dante In Name Only) treatment like it was in PSASBR if she gets in. :p

BTW I personally don't mind reboot Lara. She's definitely more worthy then that potheaded crack addicted impersonator who calls himself Dante when he really isn't to begin with.

Not just that, she's also the most iconic video game female protagonist.
And honestly, I kinda want another female fighter in Smash. I guess we did just get Isabelle, but also, more pls

Honestly if he's in I'm gonna try to absolutely main him at this point.
More power to you. It's ironic, cause (besides Goemon) he's my most wanted, but I don't really think I would end up maining him.
I'm trying to stick to one main and have a pocket full of secondaries so he's just as important anyway.

"Oh, that's pretty cool. Can I go back to my giant purple space dragon now?"

I'm assuming they'd do new lara? Didn't play much old school Tomb Raider but the dual pistols were kind of her thing, and considering Snake has no traditional "gun" she wouldn't either.

I always figured Bayonetta was the first one to break that rule.

Yes, the guns are magic, but they still function exactly like a normal gun and, despite all the colors and details, are still recognizable as actual guns.

To drive my point home, you can use realistic-looking guns in her games, and they literally do the exact same thing as her own guns.

She'd be neat for the fan-made crossover interactions alone.

:ultinkling:: Woomy (the fire)...
Lara Croft: Compared to what I've been through, that's nothing.

Given that, I'd love to see the justification for a Metal Slug character getting in, since their series is anything but realistic, and they start out with a pistol.

I think the reasoning is that as long as it's not colored like an actual gun, it's fine. This is why the original Zapper only had its color scheme changed.
