Official Smash Ultimate Discussion

Almost one month has passed since release. In retrospect....

  • This is by far the best Smash ever. Like, I don't even know how they will top this.

  • Pretty freakin' good; I have a few qualms over things like internet play, balancing issues, etc.

  • It's ok, but [insert Smash game here] is better.

  • I'd rather play Parcheesi.

Your guess is as good as mine
A fighter with whip like the Simon Belmont will be an original choice.
ZSS technically has a whip. She needs to use it more throughout her moveset though.
I'm watching the show Deception, which is about a magician who goes to work for the FBI.

Which gets me to thinking. Any Magician characters in video games that might get into Smash 5?
Ashley's probably the most likely mage character to be introduced in the next Smash. Being an AT and a Mii Fighter costume bodes well for her chances in the future.
There's also Kamek like others have mentioned, and Celica too kinda.

I remember not so long ago thinking Elma was gonna be a shoo in for whenever this game was announced but this newer Xenoblade seems way more talked about. I’ve never played a xenoblade game, but I see Pyra everywhere. I don’t really like her design, but I’m interested in how her and Rex would play.

Most disagree, but I think that Little Mac and Duck Hunt are being replaced by new Retro characters.
Wii Fit Trainer just seems like an easy drop choice for more new characters considering this game won't be on a Wii system or have Wii Fit.
Shulk is the most likely to stay but he is possible to get cut because of Rex.

Okay, I lied. Bayonetta is the most likely to stay but sometimes I try to forget she was ever in Smash.

The thing is, Mr. Game & Watch was introduced in Melee and he's been back for both sequels, ROB was a newcomer in Brawl and he came back in Smash 4.

Even the Ice Climbers were not cut because they were replaced by Duck Hunt Dog or Little Mac, but rather they were cut only due to technical limits of the 3DS hardware and Sakurai's desire to have the same roster between versions.

So, why would Sakurai suddenly start cutting retro reps? Especially given the Duck Hunt Dog and Little Mac are both fairly popular characters with Punch-Out and Duck Hunt being NES games millions have played.

Also, I don't consider Little Mac a retro rep given he was in a 2009 Wii game.

My point is, we can keep Mr. Game & Watch, ROB, Duck Hunt Dog and bring back the Ice Climbers and that leaves the number of Veteran retro reps at 4. Add in two more, and you're at six retro reps. Not a bad number, and a good sampling of Nintendo's history.

As for who the two new retro reps are, I think they will be Takamaru given Sakurai wanted him in Smash as far back as Melee, but held back due to the Mysterious Murasame Castle not making it to the west until a 2013 release on the 3DS Virtual Console and Ballon Fighter, a long rumored retro character since Melee.

That said, I'm still hoping Muddy Mole makes it as a Game Boy retro rep!

Having Agumon in Smash would be great. But I think he's only got a chance if the newer Digimon titles get ported onto the Switch. Which I personally hope they will.
I don't think thats a problem!
FFVII was not "ported" to the Switch, but Cloud is in Smash the same way.
If you think about it, Agumon showed in more Nintendo Games than Cloud.

Yeah, but Cloud was one of the most talked about third-party characters, for better or worse, and he was highly relevant at the time of his announcement as is. They remastered VII and announced the VII remake. Beyond that, he is one of gaming largest icons, on par with characters such as Mega Man.

What do you think the chances of Takamaru getting in are?

It seems that the main reason he hasn't gotten in the past is because of a lack of familiarity. However now that his game has gotten an official release in the West, and has had even more exposure through his assist trophy role in the last Smash Bros., I think this might be the time Takamaru finally gets added.

As Morbi Morbi already said; Cloud got a boost through his overall popularity. Agumon and the Digimon series lost their relevance in the recent years, some games didn't even get released here in Europe and if, then mostly only in English.

But still, you never know what's gonna happen. Didn't think Cloud or Ryu would make it into Smash either.

The original Pokemon theme (from the dub version) was basically a homage to 80s rock especially AOR and melodic rock.

Maybe Rayman to coming as newcomer in Super Samsh Bros., because had appeared Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle, although Rayman not appeared in this game but the first appearance of Raving Rabbits was in the Rayman Raving Rabbids.

I don't see how the success of Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle would help Rayman's chances. If anything, it makes the Rabbids viable contenders.

And one myth is that Pokeshipping was primarily a dub thing it was around well before Pokemon came to the West

I think there's a 99% chance he's a newcomer in Smash 5. I've read several interviews with Sakurai that said that he wanted to add Takamaru to Smash Bros since Melee, but the fact that his game never made it out of Japan meant Takamaru would be unknown in the West, something that was fixed when the 3DS got the game a few years ago.

Otherwise, there's nothing else that really holds him back. His abilities and attacks from his game a suited for Smash Bros, he's different from any of the other sword fighters already in the roster, and he could have a fun stage based on his game.

He's getting in this game. I would be shocked if he does not make the cut. Sakurai wants him in, fans want him in, and the greatest barrier to his inclusion is no longer a factor.

He's definitely a great contender for a newcomer. He was an Assist Trophy and Sakurai did consider him for a bit.

lmao you don't have to apologize for that.
Is the Digimon franchise considerd a true video game franchise though?
I've always seen it as more of an anime franchise.

Twenty pages since I was gone. Wow. Three things:
1. On the topic of Captain Toad, he'll probably have a jump and double jump (assuming he makes it in), but if he does they'll be bad.
Super bad.
Like Jigglypuff bad.
#buffthepuff
And he'll have horizontal and vertical navigation moves, of course (though I suspect that he'll have awful mobility).
2. Little Mac is not retro. Punch-Out!! for the Wii proves that he's still somewhat relevant, and I'm suspecting Punch-Out!! Switch is coming in 2020 (Every console Punch-Out!! game came out 11 years after the previous one: NEs in 1987, SNES in 1998, Wii in 2009, and, continuing the pattern, Switch in 2020. If we get Punch-Out!! Switch, Don Flamenco, Glass Joe, and King Hippo aren't too improbable). Therefore, Little Mac is probably not going to be cut.
3. I don't think Digimon is very likely, it's a bit popular but not very. However, it is very possible, and I would not be shocked very much if Digimon was in Smash 5.
Also, if you think that Digimon are impossible because they originated in an anime, they actually started as virtual pets on microconsoles.

Don't really see anything holding back his inclusion, he could make the cut.

Always been my favorite pick for a second Yoshi character.
The only other choice, so that is my second pick for a Yoshi character as well.
I mean are you really going to make Baby Mario and Baby Luigi fight themselves as an adult?
>Sakurai
>competitive

Choose one.
Sigh, people still made this misconception over and over again. I made a post here a while back about this.
Sakurai does not dislike competitive Smash Brothers, he just does not want it directed only towards that. He needs to appeal to the bigger audience for cash, and the majority of the audience is the casuals. If Sakurai made a game that appealed to only the competitive, that could cause a big loss of money as the majority of the audience, who are the casuals, would not be playing it as much because it is "too difficult" or something like that. In fact, I think Sakurai kind of likes competitive Smash a bit. He attended some events of it and even added For Glory.
Get what I mean?

Honestly, even though the Wii U version was almost definitely used as a base for this game, I could see a slight possibility of Roy/Lucina, Dr. Mario, or Dark Pit getting held back only as preemptive damage control against complaints about “too many Fire Emblem/Mario reps” and “clones angery”
Then again, a change like that could be met with its own backlash.
Would anybody really miss Dark Pit? I’m sure there are people out there, but the differences in his design, voice, and moveset add so little. It’s not like he’s getting in the way of anything, and I would’ve argued against this point if this was ssb4 speculation, but maybe it’s time to stress character diversity and keeping things from getting overcrowded.
I really just want more FE characters simply as alts. I love the Koopalings being with Bowser Jr. Maybe I’m crazy, but I want a sword duo character like the Ice Climbers. Maybe, unlike ICs, their sets are a little different too, like Lucina paired up with a Chrom that has Roy’s set? Maybe it’s just bc I like the games, but I really do see a ton of different FE characters brought up as different ppl’s preferred choices. As a tangent, dlc alt costumes are a good idea. But yea, I mean, think of all the pairs that could work
Chrom & Lucina
Roy & Eliwood
Lyn & Hector (secondary weapon was a sword iirc)
Alm & Celica
Ephraim & Eirika
I think a lance could have the same animations and hit boxes as a sword iiidk
Even Azura & Shigure, Ryoma & Xander could be cool. Anna & Anna could be funny. There’s even those blonds from Heroes, and those other blonds Fromm Warriors. I’m not suggesting all of these. The concept itself is a pipe dream lol
But I do think it’d work well if done, and would make it easier to accommodate for a newest main protagonist that isn’t something crazy unique like a dragon

Oops I changed topics halfway through
Edit: This could be done with Marth too, but for some reason, he just feels more established as his own character in smash. It feels different, but I guess it’s probably not.

I am under the impression that Takamaru will be this game's retro character, ala Ice Climbers and Duck Hunt. Sakurai made the comment that he was possible for the last game, and as we have already covered, he was an assist trophy in the previous game. An interesting Assist Trophy, at that. I would be at least some level of shocked if he isn't playable in this game.

To be fair on that second point, Palutena had a similar problem with her being part of Pit's Final Smash but that got changed. Not sure what Villager's recovery would change to though...

The Chibi-Robo maybe is a good choice.
As much as I would love Chibi Robo, his series has declined harder and harder over the course of time. His first game was incredible, Park Patrol was pretty good. But then Zip Lash and that camera game happened, and I am sad to say his franchise is likely dead. All I have left to remember him by is the cute little amiibo that came with Zip Lash.

Takamaru would be an amazing character to get the Little Mac treatment, but I would also love to see Ashley get the same deal.

Actualy the Digimon Cyber Sleught Games are realy popular!
And Digimon Adventure Tri is making some good noise.

Some time ago a Digimon Game was released on Nintendo 3DS , a game for the new Appmon series.

And we can count on the rivalry with Pokémon i think.
I would love to see Agumon and Pikachu in a battle!

You have any proof of that? Don't remember that being an issue with Palutena's inclusion.

Besides, Palutena's Army was a ****ty Final Smash - it was gonna have to be changed anyway.

Ashley isn't really a retro character, though. She's made appearances in Warioware games and whatnot. I would absolutely adore Ashley if she were added, but I don't think she fits the context Little Mac and Takamaru fit.

I mean we're already beating up puppies; what exactly is the issue here?
Duck Hunt is not a puppy. Still, he is a dog and I love animals. So I get what you mean.
It is just funny to see Mario beat himself as a baby. If Mario KOs Baby Mario and he gets broken, than adult Mario's life is changed forever. But.... yes, time travel is confusing.

Digimon and Pokemon aren't exactly rivals anymore. A few years ago maybe, but not now.

On the topic of Baby Mario, my ideal moveset for him would be to give him the hammer from Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time, something that could be used by him to fend off the larger opponents. A few of his attacks could draw from this game as well; I can easily see him pulling out an egg and smacking it with his hammer or using a Pocket Chomp as a Final Smash.

And as a bonus we get Baby Luigi and Baby Peach alts.
