Official Smash Ultimate Discussion

Almost one month has passed since release. In retrospect....

  • This is by far the best Smash ever. Like, I don't even know how they will top this.

  • Pretty freakin' good; I have a few qualms over things like internet play, balancing issues, etc.

  • It's ok, but [insert Smash game here] is better.

  • I'd rather play Parcheesi.

I feel if we DID get a Star Ocean rep somehow, it would be Welch Vineyard, since she's practically the poster girl for SO, being in every game.

at least give us SO music... :c

ps great to meet fellow star ocean fans ily

and Jedisupersonic Jedisupersonic i think I saw you playing Anamnesis once in multiplayer
I think Welch would be awesome, especially if they went with her Star Ocean 5 design

>people defend Steve supporters, while Shantae supporters are mocked and called "delusional horny men"
Life isn't fair...
Are you trying to cause drama again?

I didn't see any of us in here call any Shantae supporters that, heck i'd like Shantae in smash myself but I also see it as not a very realistic possibility. Being proven wrong would be nice, but I still am very doubtful.

My guess is November 7th.

It's on a Wednesday, a typical Direct day and not a release day for any other game, and exactly one month before Smash's release. It's also a week and a half before Let's Go! releases, which is more than enough time to keep Smash news from overshadowing its release while also remaining close enough to Smash's release to not be considered old news too quickly.

Plus, assuming we're getting a Pokemon newcomer of any variety, that character being revealed can only benefit Pokemon Let's Go! hype.
Personally I still can't seem them doing two Nintendo related directs on the same month tbh but that's just me.

And again too there seems to be some kind of pattern. I don't think its a coincidence.

June: Smash Direct > August: Smash Direct > October: Smash Direct > December: Release Date

September and November simply being an Nintendo Direct with a small reveal and Pokemon Direct.

Square is a ****ing *******, they let Chrono Trigger die and then **** on its corpse with all those random retcons. Don't listen to their lies.
Retcons? What ret--you know what? Ignorance is probably bliss. Forget I asked.

Man...the more I think about it, the more amazing a Square-Enix led Smash bros type of game would be amazing. i mean, yeah, Dissidia is a fighting game featuring main heroes and villains from the series, but the fighting style is just meh. First one was good on PSP, but this recent one...the less said the better.

A smash-style though...that used characters from Final Fantasy, Dragon Quest, Chrono Trigger, ...of Mana, Kingdom Hearts, The World ends with You! Geez, the list could easily provide enough characters to fill a 70 character Smash roster!

Question: Do you know what Shypox does? Because it sounds interesting. Is it worth it?
I forgot where, but one of the books in DQ (no idea which town anymore) had the history of the 'Shypox' spell. It's pretty entertaining to read. I haven't gotten that ability here, but I remember from VIII that it was something like randomly stopping the afflicted character from acting due to being too embarrassed or shy.

EDIT: You ninja'd me on your own question lol. Also, didnt know it was apart of the setting. I do know that some opponents can use it, though

No I don't know :( I don't think I'm that far yet
Looked it up. It’s a part of the Dracovian settings when you start the game. All the options make it more challenging. Shypox can possibly randomly stun a character for a turn. Lame. No thank you. Lol

Did I say two in the same month? I'm not sure to what you're referring there.

First was the PS1 version, they didn't just add animated cutscenes(which are great mostly) but they added an animated ending which has some random baby in it to tie in with (the non-existing) Chrono Cross.
Then the DS version has the Dream Devourer or whatever its name was and it not only makes everything in the game completely pointless and throws a big middle finger to every Schala theorists but also has Magus's memories erased making his whole character arc pointless and that's not even resolved in the (non-existing) sequel.

But yes, SE should make a whole fighting game around their characters, I'd buy it solely for Crono but I'd love to see TWEWY, Bravely Default and Octopath too.

In theory yes, but not in practice. Gaur and Mog for example have just about nothing to do with the main plot. Terra is important early game, but fades into the background and literally becomes optional by the end. Celes on the other hand is consistently important to the story throughout, is always mandatory, and is front-and-center in many of the most iconic scenes (the Opera, the cliff, etc). She also has much better developed interactions with the rest of her party (especially Locke) than most of the others.

Really you could cut the playable characters down to Celes, Terra, Locke, Sabin, Edgar, and Setzer with almost no loss. Among those, Celes and Locke stay consistent in their importance while the others are important for sections of the game but not the whole game.
Terra is important to the game's main themes, so even though she's optional in the WoR she makes the story better when you DO get her.

Sabin's a weird one to argue as important since he doesn't really contirbute to the main plot; he's important because of other people and his scenario involves seeing the Empire's evil from another part of the world in which case Cyan is more important, and we start to get back to the multiple protagonists thing. Because after all, FF6 is a game about piecing together the world from multiple people.

We can still group them by their importance to the central story, though.
Important storywise and thematically
Terra, Celes, Locke, Edgar, Banon, Leo, arguably Shadow

Important for a few story scenes but mostly important for personal stuff
Sabin, Setzer, Cyan, Gau, Stragos

Tentatively important
Mog, Relm

Not important
Gogo, Umaro

Anyway, to bring it back to Smash, they'd probably choose Celes or Terra if they had to choose, or maybe Bowser Jr. style if they could get away with it. Celes has Runic, though, which works fine in Smash…

Both a Smash and Pokemon Direct on the same month.
But I didn't say that. I said Pokemon *releases* in November. Which it does.

I really doubt there's much left for a Let's Go! Direct. Or any non-Smash direct in 2018. I'm sticking to my Nov. 7 Smash direct prediction, then a January direct to give proper release schedules for their 2019 catalogue.

Just a feeling on my part (and I don't typically delve into this sort of thing)...I believe there's a good chance of us getting news right at the end of September (next week Wednesday for instance) or beginning weeks of October. The Direct was originally scheduled for the 6th of this month, and it wasn't a Smash direct either. I really don't think they'll leave those folllwing out to dry. In addition, I don't believe the rescheduling of the previous direct causes any pushing back on planned subsequent news.

Edit: I'm probably getting the Switch bundle AND the steelbook+pro controller, and will probably try to sell my electronic code

I want Celes so she can have Runic which would basically be a better version of Rosalina's Down B

That's assuming there is a direct in November. We have no reason to think so and we've had many years where we only had one general direct after E3 and before the next year.

I think late October early November is the best we could hope for a Smash Direct. I don't think we will get a seperate general direct this year, MAYBE in December.

Edit: For context the last year that happened was 2014 and even then it was just region specific 3DS directs (Japan & Australia). Before then it was 2013.
I don't think we will have another general direct before Smash's release, but that's just me.

I said it once and I'll say it again, October is the last month they can use to reveal stuff because the bundle releases on Nov. 2 and it WILL have the finished mural in its box.

at the very least if the NEW marker over characters vanishes by TGS they will have a reveal behind closed doors and a Smash direct afterwards

which would probably at least be Heihachi and Lloyd since it lines up with both the 24th leak and ProtonMail which both used encryption. I think Incineroar and Ken may be shown later. Just gotta wait and see

I hope the mural Nov 2nd thing is true but I doubt it...seems too early? Maybe I should be optimistic.

Otherwise the Nov 7th date makes a lot of sense. I was thinking the same thing that it needs to be spaced around Let's Go, and after Let's Go feels too late. The 50 fact extravaganza was just about a month before so the 7th seems like a solid fit.

Edit: Actually I forgot, Smash Wii U released Dec 6 in Japan...so it was almost 2 months (late October). We could see a smash direct at the end of October...hype.

How long was it between when the new tab vanished before Isabelle's reveal?

I don’t understand why anyone would want a new rep from the same third party series, unless it’s an echo fighter like shadow or ken. Give me Sora over a new final fantasy character or Phoenix Wright over a new mega man character.
Because other people want different characters.

You want Pheonix Wright or Sora meanwhile I want Tails or Protoman for example.

Heh, just watch the Smash direct be set at a time where it's September 30th for the US. But October 1st in Japan

Nice to see the daily arguments continuing about Steve/Banjo!

If Steve does end up getting included, what do you guys expect his moveset to be?

We've gone over BK's moveset countless times. For the platformers they come from, their attacks seem to be pretty much built for a smash game. Although with Steve, it's a bit hard for me to picture what he would actually look like as a fighter.

Anybody got any moveset ideas for Steve? Genuinely curious!

The console box doesn't seem to have a mural on it, but you're right, I forgot about the console releasing early on Nov. 2nd.

Nintendo can play this one of two ways:

1) Show the final Smash direct before the console's release to try and drum up week one sales, OR
2) Show the final Smash direct after the console's release, but before Black Friday, to try and put their emphasis on Black Friday sales.

Honestly, I could see either. Now I'm 50/50 on a late October or Nov. 7th direct.

I truly believe the final smash direct WILL happen from Oct 15th through Nov 2nd. Once November comes around legit leaks WILL happen since the game will be dispersed for companies to be reviewed etc... If i was trying to beat the leaks to the punch then Oct 15th through Nov 2nd is it.
