Official Smash Ultimate Discussion

Almost one month has passed since release. In retrospect....

  • This is by far the best Smash ever. Like, I don't even know how they will top this.

  • Pretty freakin' good; I have a few qualms over things like internet play, balancing issues, etc.

  • It's ok, but [insert Smash game here] is better.

  • I'd rather play Parcheesi.

I know it's never smart to put 100% stock in leakers.

But to anyone who's doubting him at this point, I'd say give him at least a 75/25, 75% chance of being legit, 25% chance of being fake.

This is going past 'lucky' and legit heading into 'real ****' territory.

Mute City.

Because why would the 3DS stage under the same name be given a rename to "Mute City SNES" if there wasn't another "Mute City" present?
Glad to know I'm not the only one thinking this. I think it's a likely possibility.

All other renamed stages were due to existing stages with the same name, to detail:
Yoshi's Island (64) -> Super Happy Tree
Yoshi's Island from Brawl already has that name and the new name refers to the fruit tree in the back of the stage. And while I'm at it, I'll be elaborating why Yoshi's Island (Melee) isn't renamed to something different:
The Japanese name for the Yoshi's Island stages from Smash 64 and Brawl is ヨッシーアイランド (literally Yoshi Island written in katakana) while the Japanese name for Yoshi's Island from Melee is ヨースター島 (Yoster Island, with Island written in native Japanese "shima", as evidenced by the usage of the 島 kanji). This is likely a localization quirk where both terms end up being translated the same, so Yoshi's Island from Melee is simply named "Yoshi's Island (Melee)" to distinguish from the Brawl stage.

Kongo Jungle (Melee) -> Kongo Falls
Avoids confusion with Smash 64's Kongo Jungle and the stage evidently takes place in a waterfall.

Mario Circuit (Brawl) -> Figure-8 Circuit
The stage is actually more loosely based on Mario Kart DS's Figure-8 Circuit, having a similar layout (resembling the number 8) and borrowing similar aesthetic elements overall. It's not the exact same course, though. The renaming is obviously because Smash Wii U's Mario Circuit, taken from Mario Kart 8, is also in the game.

Dream Land (Smash 3DS) -> Dream Land GB
Renamed to distinguish from Smash 64's Dream Land and refers to the fact it takes place inside a Game Boy, similar to Flat Zone.

That leaves us with...
Mute City (Smash 3DS) -> Mute City SNES
Likely renamed to distinguish from Melee's Mute City, as this stage is a complete recreation of the first Mute City track from the original F-Zero on the SNES, down to using the same sprites and having a retro feel to it similar to the above mentioned Dream Land GB and following a similar nomenclature. Melee's Mute City is based on the first Mute City track from F-Zero X and likely will get a HD make over just like other returning stages.

True, but I wonder what the specific damage values would be.
My guess is that it's 100% like in Brawl.

Most instant KO moves like Bayonetta's Final Smash seem to only do so while at 100% or more.

Reminder that knockback is calculated after the damage is dealt, so if the Ultimate Chimera deals 100% with an instant KO property, it will always meet the instant KO condition even when hitting a foe at 0%.

It's from a Japanese Picture Book. Do you read old Nintendo children's literature from Japan? :yoshi:
I might have seen it somewhere on the Internet, so I think that's how I remember it. I seriously need to try some Nintendo -based manga though.

The fact that we can apply "only" to having one hundred three total stages is kind of indicative of how insatiable the Smash community is.
Yea, I feel like it makes more sense when you say only 4 more new stages. Because that's what people are really upset about.

While his source for this may be different than his Smash sources...

It's getting really hard to find reasons to doubt him at all anymore.

I still see people scream "Lucky guess" about his picks, but stuff keeps falling into place for him this time.
Yeah, all rumors should be taken with a grain of salt, but some are more credible than others. Especially after Simon's reveal, despite some criticisms, I considered him credible, at least in regards to Smash. And especially when the Verge vs Loz battles were happening, it felt like the criticisms lobbed against him were unfair (well, except being consistently rude, which is a legitimate criticism, which was on full display last night), and the arguments kept moving the goal posts. Doesn't change much for me, but glad to see it coming true (was it ever mentioned if it was coming to Switch?). Now if only he can clear up many of the current issues...

People still doubt Gematsu.

So no, people will never stop, even if he's 100% correct, it'll all be 'lucky guesses' in their eyes because his choices were 'obvious'.
I feel like even if we got chorus kids this game and sakurai announced he meant to put them in last game we'd STILL have gematsu deniers so its a lost cause if people don't believe that one was real at this point.

So I woke up, checked out the blog, and guess what series got a remix? ;)

Not gonna lie, I feel pretty cocky about getting this right.

But anyways, I think the music theory is only being applied to unique characters, not Echoes. We could still get a Impa or Dixie Exho despite both franchises having a track on the website. But if the remaining franchises are an indicator of who we'll get, we're getting a unique newcomer from one of these franchises:

:ultfox::ultpikachu::ultness::ulticeclimbers::ultgnw::ultpit::ultwario::ultsonic::ultrob::ultwiifittrainer::ultlittlemac::ultshulk::ultduckhunt::ultcloud::ultbayonetta:

Obviously some of these retro franchises have almost no hope of ever receiving a second unique character, so we're probably looking at something closer to this:

:ultfox::ultpikachu::ultness::ultpit::ultwario::ultsonic::ultshulk::ultcloud::ultbayonetta:

So out of these franchises, who would I bet is getting a a unique character? Well, besides Pokemon, I don't feel comfortable with any of them. I wouldn't hold my breath for a Wario, FF, or Bayo character. EarthBound and KI could get Echoes, but I doubt either would get an actual new character. Then that leaves us with SF, Sonic, and Xenoblade. It's possible we could get Shadow as a semi-clone or Elma, but compared to a new Pokemon rep, that seem a lot less likely.

Maybe the music theory can be proven wrong with the next newcomer, but for now, I'm assuming it's real. Unfortunately, that would mean no Geno, Skull Kid, or (the most heartbreaking of the three) Bandana Dee.

I'd argue genos in such a weird place being a mario rpg character he could happen and still fit the "music theory".

but obviously i defend geno every chance i get haha

I think Geno could still work if Sakurai completely separated him from the rest of the Mario cast and gave him his own "SMRPG universe".

I honestly couldn't tell ya how likely that is, but it's something. Better than what Skull Kid and Bandana Dee have to work with.

Thing is that not all of these series will end up getting new music, let alone a new character.

Don't get me wrong, I'd absolutely kill for a Star Fox newcomer, but I don't see anyone as particularly likely. Krystal was our best shot, and she was made into an Assist Trophy. Only way I see her getting shafted in favor of, say, Slippy is if Miyamoto pushed for him instead. As if Star Fox Grand Prix is real, and its once again missing Krystal. So Slippy would be used to promote it or something.

As for Star Fox music. Smash 3DS/Wii U had 14 between them, with every past track with the exception of Sector Z from Smash 64. Star Fox has 17 in Smash Ultimate, which means 2 new tracks at the very least if the Sector Z track returns. Plus, Star Fox's music tends to fit Smash Bros. as-is, so the new tracks likely wouldn't be remixes, either.

I think this is a case where it's pretty clear if anyone's an exception, it'd be Geno. He's in a very special place being essentially a third party Mario character.

I'm excited. With Minecraft content in and Microsoft now having a part in the game Banjo and Kazooie will definitely get into the game either at release or dlc.
You and me both--I hope so. Being a Banjo fan this hype cycle has been an emotional roller coaster.

I bet Crash and Spyro won't be on it so Activision can sell more of the HD remakes.
Not only is Crash now on Nintendo's current console, imagine Sony's former mascot not being on the classic version of the console he represented. :rotfl:

Personally I don't think the music theory applies to dlc (I mean how could it?). So I'm sticking with my guns and saying Pokemon newcomer....mayyyyyyybe a Xenoblade newcomer or Shadow/Tails semi-clone, but Geno is first dlc revealed at final Smash Direct. Makes a lot of sense.

I'm wondering if Mega Man Legends will be on it...
Hold on, I've got J. Jonah Jameson around here somewhere.

I'm kind of hard pressed to say exactly what the Itty Bitty PSX Committee is going to end up with, though. Seems like they're mostly aiming for the 95-98 era so far; I wasn't invested enough then to really give a good analysis.

MediEvil, Twisted Metal, and PaRappa the Rapper come to mind.
