Official Smash Ultimate Discussion

Almost one month has passed since release. In retrospect....

  • This is by far the best Smash ever. Like, I don't even know how they will top this.

  • Pretty freakin' good; I have a few qualms over things like internet play, balancing issues, etc.

  • It's ok, but [insert Smash game here] is better.

  • I'd rather play Parcheesi.

I'm back.

Let's talk about DLC.

  • How many characters do you think we're getting?
  • Who do you think will be the first DLC character?
  • Which character(s) do you think would cause the most hype, be it in the community or overall?
  • What additional series/companies would you like to see represented as DLC or could see being represented as DLC?
  • Do you think there'll be a focus on third party DLC or first party DLC, or a balance of the two?
  • Who would you like to see as DLC?
  • How do you think DLC will be structured?
  • Will characters be sold in packs or separately? Will there be a season pass?
  • Do you think we'll get more than just characters and stages (maybe more Mii Costumes, or a new class of purchasable items)?
  • What are some potential character packs you can think of/would like to see?
  • Do you think we might see new modes as DLC?
  • Will you support DLC for this game? What would make you want to purchase it or not want to purchase it?

That should be enough questions. Hopefully it lasts us two pages. That'd sure be nice.
I'm not as familiar with the DLC structure from Smash 4, as I was somehow oblivious to it going on at the time. It's difficult to say at this point, as we don't know the full details of the game. But assuming my predictions are in the base game (Incineroar, Isaac, Banjo & Kazooie, Geno, Dixie Kong, Shadow, Ken, Felix):
  • How many characters do you think we're getting?
I think we may get around the amount of characters as last time, 8 unique characters, which would go well with 8-player Smash. Though, I would hope Smash Ultimate becomes a games-as-a-service and DLC is supported for years, with a lot more by the endpoint. Also, echoes complicate the count, adding 4-8 more.
  • Who do you think will be the first DLC character?
Given my predictions leave out some fan favorites, my guess is a first party character, highly demanded for a while, Wa... Skull Kid. Either that, or Bandana Waddle Dee.
  • Which character(s) do you think would cause the most hype, be it in the community or overall?
I think Sora would cause the most hype, both for Smash and the gaming community. If assists became playable characters, such as Waluigi (though I'd prefer Bomberman, and to a lesser extent, Alucard and Zero).
  • What additional series/companies would you like to see represented as DLC or could see being represented as DLC?
  • First party series are difficult as I feel like they'll primarily be returning series, especially Rex & Pyra, though I could definitely see ARMS. I would hope Wonder Red gets in somehow. As for third parties, Persona, Devil May Cry, Tekken, Kingdom Hearts (may technically be Disney, not Square), and from new companies Activision's Crash Bandicoot. Possibly Ubisoft's Rayman, as well as Rabbids (I see them as assists with Rayman)
  • Do you think there'll be a focus on third party DLC or first party DLC, or a balance of the two?
I think while it may start off as first party, a great chunk will be from third parties, as they'll have the most buzz.
  • Who would you like to see as DLC?
Crash Bandicoot. Absolutely would love it. Joker from Persona, Dante from Devil May Cry, and Sora from Kingdom Hearts. Would love Tails and Robotnik, though I'm doubtful. That being said, if any third party series will get more characters, it's Sonic. And I'd love to see some Assists become playable, especially Bomberman, but also Alucard and Zero.
  • How do you think DLC will be structured?
Most likely like last time, since it presumably worked well. It'd be nice to have some sort of tie-in with the online service, either being free echoes, or free returning stages.
  • Will characters be sold in packs or separately? Will there be a season pass?
I think they would be sold separately, with possibly echoes as a part of the package. I could see maybe a first party echo bundle. I would love a season pass, then I can get that without having to worry about buying characters I'm less psyched about to complete the roster. I doubt it, though, because I feel like they'll make more money selling them seperately.
  • Do you think we'll get more than just characters and stages (maybe more Mii Costumes, or a new class of purchasable items)?
DLC Assists lol. Seriously, I can't think of any new class of purchasable items, but I think (and hope) DLC Mii Costumes will come back.
  • What are some potential character packs you can think of/would like to see?
My pie-in-the-sky hope: Sonic pack (Tails, Dr. Robotnik, Blaze)
  • Do you think we might see new modes as DLC?
I don't think we'll see new modes as DLC, or even what potential modes there could be that would make sense as a DLC purchase.
  • Will you support DLC for this game? What would make you want to purchase it or not want to purchase it?
I'm most likely going to support DLC. If I don't have to unlock every character in game to complete the single player mode, I may go for a while maintaining my personal "favorite" roster (not for long though) and get characters I'm personally hyped for. But if there's a season pass, I'd like to get every character to complete the roster.

I did some serious looking into this which is what took so long. Reading Vergeben's post history on gamefaqs carefully (I was told indirectly about these posts before, hadn't read them myself), it seems like he does make it clear only one source (albeit apparently a very reliable one) was suggesting the SE character and that he suspects personally it's DLC. I'm not sure where the 3/4 thing came from; I'll ask about it sometime later but probably won't get a chance tonight.
Here is Vergeben's source breakdown with the SE character:

Source 1: His "most refutable source", which claims there is a SE character but is currently unaware of the character's identity (much like how this and another Smash source knew the existence of a new pokemon but not the identity of it for a while). For those wondering this is also the one where the Minecraft content claim comes from (or at least where it originated, I haven't seen Vergeben attribute it to his other sources yet, only that he is still behind it being a thing in his most recent comment about it).

Source 2 and 3: Currently don't know of a SE character, but they haven't denied its existence nor do they know if Incineroar and Ken are all that's left for the base roster.

New 4th source: Some "random guy" that came up to Vergeben claiming to confirm everything else he stated, as well as claiming the identity of the SE character. Vergeben does not know this source and is currently untrustworthy of them, which is why he hasn't stated what they claimed the SE character to be, in the event this is just another false source trying to give him wrong information for malicious purposes.

Regarding DLC, Vergeben just stated that the game would obviously be supported post-launch, though if the SE character is DLC is currently unknown.

Anyone expecting more than, say, 4-5 more characters for the base game is setting expectations too high.

Let's go ahead and see how many characters were introduced in each iteration of Smash (and yes, clones/echoes count):
N64 -> :ultmario::ultdk::ultlink::ultsamus::ultyoshi::ultkirby::ultfox::ultpikachu::ultluigi::ultness::ultfalcon::ultjigglypuff: (12)
Melee -> :ultpeach::ultbowser::ulticeclimbers::ultsheik::ultzelda::ultdoc::ultpichu::ultfalco::ultmarth::ultyounglink::ultganondorf::ultmewtwo::ultroy::ultgnw: (14)
Brawl -> :ultmetaknight::ultpit::ultzss::ultwario::ultsnake::ultike::ultpokemontrainer::ultdiddy::ultlucas::ultsonic::ultkingdedede::ultolimar::ultlucario::ultrob::ulttoonlink::ultwolf: (18, counting the Pokémon Trainer as 3)
3DS/Wii U -> :ultvillager::ultmegaman::ultwiifittrainer::ultrosalina::ultlittlemac::ultgreninja::ultmiifighters::ultpalutena::ultpacman::ultrobin:ultlucina::ultshulk::ultbowserjr::ultduckhunt::ultdarkpit::ultryu::ultcloud::ultcorrin::ultbayonetta: (21, counting Mii Fighters as 3)
Ultimate -> :ultinkling::ultdaisy::ultridley::ultsimon::ultrichter::ultchrom::ultdarksamus::ultkrool: Isabelle (9, so far)

We're 1 character away from having 10 new additions in Ultimate. If the leaks are right, the addition of Ken and Incineroar would mean 11 newcomers total in Ultimate, which is just a little less than the amount of characters added in Smash 64 and Melee.

I think that we just shouldn't expect an amount of newcomers like Brawl or 3DS/Wii U had, which were partially at the expense of certain characters not returning. If we count returning characters from Melee and Brawl that missed 3DS/Wii U, we have 7 more characters to account for, leading to a total of 15 additions on top of the 3DS/Wii U roster.

Just something to think about, especially considering that, even though it's not a port, Ultimate is still very much built upon Smash Wii U in many regards.

It's actually 21 for Smash 4 and 9 for Ultimate...

I should know, I run a thread that has "Sm4sh 21" in it's title :yoshi:

Nitpick but...Keniroar puts us at 11.

I've never even touched an Animal Crossing game, but for some reason I've grown a little bit upset that Tom Nook didn't join the battle at the end of the Direct like it seemed like he was about to do. The guy is just so happy for his friends, he deserves a reward lol.

I'd say "two new Animal Crossing characters would've been overkill" but we did get two new Metroid characters in this game and 3 new Fire Emblem characters last game, so I don't blame anyone expecting Tom Nook to have joined as well.

However, we had already seen Tom Nook in the Villager's Final Smash, so he was already disconfirmed before Isabelle's announcement.

There are 57 blog days left before release, which still has to cover at minimum:
  • 28 returning characters
  • 7 new items
  • 5 new pokemon
  • 8 new assist trophies
  • Ken and Incineroar ;)
That is 50 entries, with 0 additional entries for returning stages. We can expect some extra entries for returning stages, because these returning stages have had entries: (besides BF and FD)
  • Lylat Cruise
  • Wily Castle
  • Princess Peach's Castle
  • Kongo Falls
  • Summit
In other words, we are pretty much on-track with the Blog timeline for the content we expect.
Remember on days when non-characters are covered, there's two blogs. Also there's one music track a week.

It just occurred to me that Pikachu has a Pikachu Libre costume in this game. What's the bet that she'll appear in the Incineroar trailer in some form?

So the Metroid and Donkey Kong representation proves that Sakurai can give in to pressure...

Well then... *cracks knuckles* Time to get started :yoshi:
You're not going to be able to do it by yourself, and it's going to be difficult to convince more people to want Boshi.

I recommend brainwashing people and infiltrating and maybe overthrowing a government from the inside. Lizard people are supposed to be good at that kind of stuff, so I'm pretty sure a dinosaur person would be pretty good at it to.

He's at least convinced me, so that's one more. If Geno's most likely gonna be in, why not Boshi echo?

I'm betting on vergebens full leak in the base game.
ken/incineroar/and the square rep (guess who i think it is haha)

1.so instead of 11 it would hit us at 12 newcomers (same as smash 64 kind of an homage). also if 108 stages is true its 9 new stages total (again same # as smash 64)

2.ends us at fighter #70 (nice round marketable number) instead of #69 in a game where fighter numbers were emphasized.

3.speaking of marketable numbers that odd way the website counts fighters that has us at 72 right now (echos count+ 3 miis + pokemon trainer counting as one single character) that number lands at 74 with ken and incineroar BUT 75 with the square rep (again a nice marketable number).

4. smashdown theory works if we get THREE more characters and while i dont think smashdown theory has to work (you wouldnt be able to play it until you unlocked everyone and buying single dlc characters would throw it off) however i do think it makes sense for the initial base roster of the game to exhaust all characters by the end of a round of smashdown (just makes sense if you think about a developer creating that mode and how they would want to make it "work" cleanly with their full game).

5.if the square rep is who i think it is then it leaves a "hype ballot choice" for the end. some of the bigger fan demanded characters ridley/krool/square rep *cough*geno*cough* reveals would be nicely spread out throughout the hype cycle for this game.

6.If the square rep is a big final reveal, the character might be held off the box and promotional material. for instance say we get a direct with ken and incineroar in early november that ends with sakurai telling us he'll reveal one final character before the games release! and so the square character is kept off the boxes and stuff, it could make sense to do that if he plans to reveal a single final character right at the very very end.

yes ill admit im just geno crazy haha but i like to think this all makes sense. im not worried about base roster vs dlc, i think geno is in and if i have to wait a bit longer than december 7th to play as him its no big deal at this point, i just think given all this evidence having geno in the base roster honestly feels more likely to me.

Metroid and Donkey Kong got no characters in Melee neither. They are franchises with frequency problems, I don't know why so many peoples go and act like Sakurai had a personal problem with them after Smash For.

Yes.
  • How many characters do you think we're getting?
  • 8. That number is everywhere this time.
  • Who do you think will be the first DLC character?
  • Spring-man
  • Which character(s) do you think would cause the most hype, be it in the community or overall?
  • The most requested as Geno or Isaac.
  • What additional series/companies would you like to see represented as DLC or could see being represented as DLC?
  • Rayman, Banjo-Kazooie, Tekken...
  • Do you think there'll be a focus on third party DLC or first party DLC, or a balance of the two?
  • A balance. Still got very requested fighters to come.
  • Who would you like to see as DLC?
  • Dixie. Just want her no matter how.
  • How do you think DLC will be structured?
  • Stand-alone fighters, stages or costumes, as the last time. No season pass or packs with discount.
  • Will characters be sold in packs or separately? Will there be a season pass?
  • I really doubt it.
  • Do you think we'll get more than just characters and stages (maybe more Mii Costumes, or a new class of purchasable items)?
  • Fighters, costumes, stages... Even game modes or expansions.
  • What are some potential character packs you can think of/would like to see?
  • Packs, as we saw last time. Character+stage. For example. Arms pack with Spring-man + Ribbon Girl echo + stage + music. Later, fighters alone, cheaper, like Dixie Kong.
  • Do you think we might see new modes as DLC?
  • Yep.
  • Will you support DLC for this game? What would make you want to purchase it or not want to purchase it?
  • Of course, I'm a Smash-head, I want every stage and fighter.

As for DLC, I think the obvious choices for first parties that wouldn't have had the time for Development in the base game would be in line so we can look forward to some Xenoblade 2 and ARMS representation.

And for those last few Stages to return like Wooly World, Rainbow Road and the remaining N64 stages.

I've go no idea what 3rd parties are in store, if any.

I'm hoping that if DLC echos are a thing that they're in some kind of package. (Please be Roll with promotional Mega Man 11 stage)

Wait till we see if he even gets in...

Cause you know, I can tell you right now that Boshi hard counters EVERY character in the game and makes Brawl Meta Knight look like a joke character...
He would probably suffer from the same problems that make Yoshi unviable like the dreadful shield etc

I really don’t understand the point of talking DLC this early on still. Whatever theories and ideas you do or don’t believe, I still think it’s way too early to discuss DLC and I find it a little frustrating that so much of the speculation for an unreleased game seems to already be headed that way.

Also, I’ve wondered for a while. Do the Echo fighters get branded as true newcomers? They’ve been treated with much less fanfare and Sakurai has acknowledged multiple times how much less work they take. Only Richter got any type of actually hyped up reveal and his space seems special for obvious reasons as a third party. If Echoes don’t count towards traditional newcomers then we only have 5 newcomers. Not saying that we’re guaranteed a ton more with that line of thinking, but then that still holds in line with the “hoping you don’t expect too many newcomers” and a “few more to reveal” without it seeming like those concepts were broken in the event we do get more than Incineroar and Ken (it’s going to be a long month until the next reveal if they’re all we hear about...)

Metroid and Donkey Kong got no characters in Melee neither. They are franchises with frequency problems, I don't know why so many peoples go and act like Sakurai had a personal problem with them after Smash For.
If Sakurai really had bias against Metroid and DK, he wouldn't have added Ridley, Dark Samus and K. Rool to the game.

And not only he added them, but they also feel true to their games. Dark Samus a bit less so due to her echo status but a lot of care was put into her animations to make her stand out and feel as alien as she truly is. I really like how Dark Samus looks in the game and I'm not even a Metroid fan.

As further evidence that series representation isn't all that important, Sakurai still added Chrom despite already there being 6 FE characters.

None of these 4 characters were added because of bias but because of popularity. Sakurai is listening to the fans by adding these characters and that extends to Inkling, Isabelle and Daisy as well. Simon too, with Richter thrown in as a nice bonus.

Let's talk about DLC.
Sure.
How many characters do you think we're getting?
I think we are at least going to get eight newcomers as DLC. If it's a succes we surely can expect even more.
Who do you think will be the first DLC character?
A first party sounds about right. I'm thinking either Skull Kid or Bandanna Waddle Dee.
Which character(s) do you think would cause the most hype, be it in the community or overall?
I think someone like Dante would bring a lot of hype (even some salt) in the community and overall. His presence could cause a similar reaction to Cloud.
What additional series/companies would you like to see represented as DLC or could see being represented as DLC?
Mostly third party franchises. I'm talking about the likes of Tekken, Devil May Cry, Ace Attorney, Resident Evil, Tales of, Tomb Raider, Soul Calibur, etc.
Do you think there'll be a focus on third party DLC or first party DLC, or a balance of the two?
I think DLC should be mostly focused on 3rd parties since they can draw in a bigger audience. It's also more fitting the DLC consists mostly of 3rd parties.
Who would you like to see as DLC?
So many characters! Skull Kid and Bandanna Dee for sure! As for 3rd parties... Chun-Li, Tails, Lara Croft, Heihachi, Dante, Leon S. Kennedy and more!
How do you think DLC will be structured?
Annual season passes sounds about right. With maybe each containing 6-8 characters?
Will characters be sold in packs or separately? Will there be a season pass?
Maybe some could be sold in themed packs ordered in franchises or companies?
Do you think we'll get more than just characters and stages (maybe more Mii Costumes, or a new class of purchasable items)?
If Mii costumes are returning, yes.
What are some potential character packs you can think of/would like to see?
Definitely a Capcom pack with more Capcom content.
Do you think we might see new modes as DLC?
I could see one mode being DLC.
Will you support DLC for this game? What would make you want to purchase it or not want to purchase it?
Absolutely! The DLC additions of Smash 4 were great and I can only see it being the same or even better with this game.

Thank you. It's honestly frustrating when people act like certain characters are put in due to their victory over Sakurai, not because he likes to give them what they want.

I have to agree DLC talk annoys me, especially when I see "oh don't worry this character can still be DLC" which is the sad truth for all fughting games nowadays.
I'd rather get the full roster at release and nothing else, I hate DLC practices that have been flooding games nowadays and if they were already in development as Verg seems to imply, it's gonna leave an even sour taste in my mouth.
