Official Smash Ultimate Discussion

Almost one month has passed since release. In retrospect....

  • This is by far the best Smash ever. Like, I don't even know how they will top this.

  • Pretty freakin' good; I have a few qualms over things like internet play, balancing issues, etc.

  • It's ok, but [insert Smash game here] is better.

  • I'd rather play Parcheesi.

I mean, to be fair, 103 for stages is an odd number, albeit I know he made the point it's an even 100 should you take away FD and the Battlefields.

Maybe we can get that Bowser's Castle stage for DLC?

Let me hope

I don't know whether or not the box is going to have the final newcomer count or what. Some people say it's just a mockup, and that it could change, or maybe not everyone is on the box. And that's perfectly plausible, sure, but I think some people are very resistant to the idea because they would be very disappointed if their most wanted didn't get in. "Oh, there's no way it's *just* one or two more."

It never hurts to keep expectations in check.

I HIGHLY doubt that with 3 months left, the game has blown 90% of its character load. I severely doubt that information only leaves a Pokemon rep and an echo fighter as final confirmations, when Sakurai casually announced 5 characters in a random August direct.

Also if my joke about FEW wasn't clear, I'm 100% convinced that Ken and Alola-Pokémon-That's-Probably-Incineroar are all we're getting. It's as good as confirmed to me. The second SE character was either a false lead, the first DLC character announced a la Mewtwo, or Vergeben's answer to the Chorus Kids.

And I'm 100% fine with that. I've always been convinced that an Alola Pokémon, Isabelle, and the Inklings were locks, and it seems I was right. And beyond that, we also got Ridley, K. Rool, and Simon Belmont. And beyond that, we have literally every veteran coming back. And beyond all of that, we have some Echo Fighters to buff up the numbers a bit more.

And to go even further beyond, "Another Day" has finally come and Chrom has gotten his chance. Like wow, that was the first time Smash Bros has actually made me shed some tears, lol.

AND Spirits is still a thing.

Now if you'll excuse me, I've got some DLC hype trains to catch for Celica, Crash, and Waluigi. Choo choo, Molted Feathers. :p

My favorite villains.
See this?

This is the act of a lawful evil in action. She knows Sonic has to go fast. She knows that Sonic has critters to save. She that he'll literally die of frustration if you make him stand still too long.

But this is a puppy with zero mercy. Sonic can go eat shih tzu for all she cares, so long as he doesn't cross the mayor's traffic laws.

The gun can easily be one of the boss weapons if they do use characters from franchises, or it could entirely be a new gun item.

Hecl, it can even be in an Assist Trophy like if Elma was one.

Future Smash info could be focused on Spirits mode, if it's seemingly important enough to not even get a mention, screenshot or tease yet. It could honestly be the focus of the entire direct if it's something substantial.

Characters aren't the only way to create hype.

And saying as such means the images could easily also be shrinked. It's fine that the image order is deliberate. Fine. But it's wrong to assume there are only 2 more characters. Nothing supports that. We also have no idea what's on the other faces of the rendered packaging
The images could indeed be altered in size.

The question, though, then becomes why weren't they?

This is the sticking point for me.

The current arrangement requires clear deliberation. But what else is there to deliberate on except "All the characters need to fit on the sides of the box"?

The idea that "nothing supports" a final count of 72 is why the world denial is being thrown around in this thread. Obviously it's not set and stone and obviously it's subject to change. But in its current form, it's quite suggestive.

One new character and an echo fighter makes sense to me as the final character reveals in a Smash Bros. Direct. I imagine the next Smash Direct will focus heavily on the new mode, so it makes sense Sakurai wouldn't want to focus too much on new challengers, hence why he revealed a ton in the last Smash Direct.

I thought I'd mention something regarding if we have 72 characters in the roster for the Smashdown mode.

That is of course divisible by 2, 3, or 4. Though one thing of note is of course is when we saw the Smashdown roster in the direct the Mii Fighters weren't in that possibly saying they won't be a part of that mode.

"WHAT THE HECK? DOES THAT MEAN POSSIBLY ONE MORE CHARACTER TO FIT SMASHDOWN?!?!" you might be asking

Noooooot exactly for during the direct we did get an example of the roster being dwindled down

They used a four player example... and after this match there's only three characters left.

So either...

1. One player is eliminated for the next match. Most likely whoever got the least wins and/or lowest score
2. The roster restarts as a sort of final round where you can choose whoever you want in one last attempt to take the win if things are close
Or 3. Smash Down just ends when there are more players then there are fighters left.

Granted with Isabelle, and presumably Ken and Incineroar there would still be 6 more characters meaning yet another match could go down. Let's assume the same scenario happens like what happened with this example. You have Game & Watch, Olimar, ROB, Isabelle, Ken, and Incineroar as options still for the four players. Meaning only two would be left. Which would again either go to a final bout between the Top 2 with the only characters left or the game can end and/or choices restart from there. It's an interesting speculation of how this mode might work even if they have a full roster that isn't divisible by 2,3, and 4 when they add DLC. And/or if you tried Smash Down prior to unlocking every single character.

Now you'll know what Dark Pit fans had to suffer through.

(And probably Wolf and Olimar fans, but I wasn't around for Brawl speculation).
I'm a Pittoo fan myself so this isn't anything new to me. :p

Just a little annoying is all and if he does make it in I'll be enjoying the character too much to let some **** heads ruin it.

One last thing before I go- I see a few people insisting Sakurai claimed he'd have 'a few more echo fighters to show us', but allow me to put my PushDustin cap on and correct that (unless the Japanese version has different wording and I'm being an ***)- the line ACTUALLY is "We plan to reveal the design of every fighter before the game launches, we'll have a few more to announce later..."

Not more Echo Fighters, more fighters in general. There don't have to be at least 2 echoes to go, so that's not a point against the box at all.

I miss the days when Impa, Elma, Decidueye, Captain Toad, Bandana Dee, Shadow, and Labo Man were actually discussed and the speculation came from how likely they all were.

They now seem like distant memories and lost dreams

Also if we're going with the idea that character numbers are the order the character is added for Smash, it makes sense for Incineroar to be the final character because he only existed in concept art when the project plan was conceived. He'd have to be the last character added because they couldn't start working on him until the design was finalized, whereas this hurdle doesn't exist with the other newcomers we got.

It's why Greninja is near the end of the internal character order in Smash 4's debug mode.

There are plenty of things to speculate about.

  • For one, box theory could potentially be incorrect. There's a chance of that.
  • What about Spirits?
  • Changes to newcomers?
  • DLC?
I'm sticking to my claims that every character in the Dengeki Top 15 will be in the game. They're all too big not to be in.

Still, you have to admit that if this is the case, then there is a possible scenario in which both Vergeben and the box are correct. This is my personal current thought process at the moment; if, say, Geno is in the works for DLC already, and Vergeben’s sources heard about Sakurai approaching Square to talk about it, then we have a scenario where box theory, Vergeben, and music theory all align perfectly. It makes too much sense to dismiss, as much as I personally hate to admit it. I would much rather have Vergeben’s 3 characters all be base roster, and I think that it’s still a very likely scenario, but at the end of the day, I’m sticking to the explanation that seems to resolve everything without any contradictions.
It would be making extra assumptions about Vergeben's information to stretch it to fit the box theory, while Vergeben has been presenting his information as base content, and it's not like Vergeben hasn't claimed stuff to be DLC before (both with right and wrong information), so if the SE character is DLC he will come out and say it at some point. As such, I'm still of the mind that Vergeben's leaks and the box theory are incompatible with the current information we have.

That said, it wouldn't be a bad idea for someone to ask him his thoughts on the box theory and the possibility of the SE character being DLC.

At least this conversation is better than Smash Cadets posting their millionth prediction roster.

As DLC. What is to say that Ken and Inceniroar are the last ones in game. And then purchasing Online for the year nets the first DLC character Free, who happens to be Bandana Dee and the rest of the characters fall from that list.

With 5 DLC characters left or so.

I feel like I’m the only one on this forum who doesn’t care about Geno.
I'm kind of indifferent to him too. Not hating or anything, but it seems like his popularity basically comes from being talked about as a Smash contender. Some people want him in, others debate that he shouldn't be in, and the discussion draws in more people from the community and the whole thing just grows. Suddenly, Geno is one of the most popular character choices despite being pretty unimportant even in the one game he came from over a decade ago.

I think we're all acting a little overly confident about Ken and Incineroar when there's still potentially other characters that could fill the spot.

My guesses for the final two fighters are Gothitelle (unique fighter, Gen 5 rep) and Randall (Cloud echo, second Yoshi rep).
