He's a two time retro veteran with no moveset issues and a sizable fanbase.
Okay.
You do not have to agree, I am just not overly fond of the characters in the slightest. When I play them, which is only if I have random fighter selected, the fun of the game is literally absent. Playing against them, all you see is their bland designs which you cannot help but think, "this character is literally in the game because it is a piece of history as opposed to a compelling character." At least Ice Climbers and Duck Hunt have something more tangible to offer.

so. . .it doesn't seem like excitebiker even made it out of the pool of candidates. Probably not a lot of work on them. These are assumptions from me of course, but I don't think they are unreasonable

Yes, realistically move-set revamps are going to be what justifies this game. We already have most essential characters and I have no idea what the cap is for third-party characters and the precedent of the series is very "anti-omission." At this point, it has been nearly a decade with the same move-sets for most of the OG cast. It is about time they touched up the move-sets just a bit. They do it every game, slightly, but I have a feeling this is the one where they turn conventions on their heads.

Time to see the world go up in flames because I don't think the world is ready for One Winged Angel in Smash, old friend.
Those are literally the only two things I want. Mostly because Chrom would mean Lucina could be a clone of him instead. And with the Legend of Zelda series more or less stagnating since Melee, it would be nice to actually have Ganon with a Legend of Zelda move-set. Either that, or give him a racing car for his final smash at least.

But no one remembers Spleunkerman, so I went with the next best option. I've never even played Excitebike.
If it were a port, we'd have known just about everything about it. Characters and stages slated to come with the launch game, modes, and actual gameplay, right there in the Direct like Mario Kart 8 Deluxe did on last year's presentation. But they didn't. It's a new title.

That would be hilarious. Lucina as Marth and Chrom as Ike. I must have done something to anger the blue haired gods of Fire Emblem.

are missing a key detail here - they weren't included simply because they were retro reps, that would be someone like Ice Climbers. They were included as "surprise" characters that no one would ever expect until the game was released (or they were leaked). I'm not saying that the likes of Balloon Figher, the Excitebike racer, and the character from Urban Champion won't get in - they just won't be classified with the three above characters, mainly because they were already considered for Melee.
If they wanted to go the original route they had planned, split Alph into his own clone character with the Rock Pikmin to differentiate him from Olimar, make Louie the Olimar Alt character and then put Brittany as the Alph Alt Character. Charlie and the President have similar-ish body shapes that don't really match up with the other four, but nobody's really clamoring for either of them.Him too but buff the h*** out of him, felt too basic to use in smash 4 since his brawl nerf. Would be cool to see him with a diff move set and have all the pilots as alternate colors

That being said, unless we get another character to rep the fighting style, my pick for an obscure retro character would have to be either Fighter Hayabusa or Star Man from Pro Wrestling. A wrestling-like character is something we've yet to see in Smash, and the concept alone leaves a lot of potential.
It would probably make more sense to have Brittany as an alt of Louie.
