Official Smash Ultimate Discussion

Almost one month has passed since release. In retrospect....

  • This is by far the best Smash ever. Like, I don't even know how they will top this.

  • Pretty freakin' good; I have a few qualms over things like internet play, balancing issues, etc.

  • It's ok, but [insert Smash game here] is better.

  • I'd rather play Parcheesi.

Can we all just agree that Smash4 did way too many random drop collectables?

Trophies? Sure, whatever.

But Custom Moves, Mii Costumes and Equipment with special perks?

It took me over a year to obtain every type of equipment with negative perks attached to them for completion sake. And Mii Hats were RIDICULOUSLY rare as well.
I know. Smash 4's ways of unlocking new customs felt way too messy and scrambeled.
Nintendo will stop making Smash when they start hating money.
I know. Six years from Ultimate, a new better Smash game comes here.

I'm rather patient for one. You guys gotta remember though what happened in Japan. Let them take their time to mourn. Lives are more important then games.

The devs are pulling out all the stops for this Smash game. It's dedicated to several different areas of the fanbase, and most obviously, fans of many characters, from veterans to newcomers.

Because of that I find it hard to believe we'll see a new Smash game any time soon after this one; it will likely come several years from now. Then again, Smash 4 came out only four years ago, so it's still hard to say. I guess we may have a potentially better idea of it after Ultimate releases, gets some time in the sun, and we see how well it's reception fares.

In any case, I don't think it really matters right now. Let's take it one game at a time. We've got one great looking Smash game on the way already, I'd say it's best to keep our focus on this one for now.

I liked 64's better, but I also love playing the game with codes on 64 to remove the time limit. It's a blast fighting in a crazy arena like that. Whether you fight to finish it, or not. I also would love a mini-game surrounding it. Where you can win either by beating the race or getting the character's single stock gone.

...Did somebody say Sakurai tried to get Tetra in Smash? He acknowledged her popularity, but that was it. The reality is, that file was named Toon Sheik and she obviously a clone intention from the getgo. I can believe it could've changed to Tetra, but there's too many factors to say if that would've happened. Tetra was never in real consideration for a Smash game. To be clear, the files said Toon Zelda/Toon Sheik. That was it. No extra files. It's pointless to assume he meant a character he didn't list. He would've listed her if he meant her. He created a clone in Toon Link, so why wouldn't he create more similar types of clones if he had time?
It's difficult to do more than speculate about what those files meant, although it's worth pointing out that Toon Sheik does not exist, as opposed to Tetra, who enjoys considerable popularity in Japan relative to other Zelda characters. It's also worth pointing out that Tetra was specifically one of the characters requested and publicized on Sakurai's japanese Dojo poll for Brawl back in the day, whereas Toon Zelda (or Sheik, for that matter) was nowhere to be found. Furthermore, this is evidence of her demand, especially in Japan. It seems just as likely "Toon Sheik" was short for Sheik-like transformation for Zelda, rather than a literal reference.

https://smashboards.com/threads/characters-on-sakurais-poll.71872/

...what would Tetra even echo?
Probably Toon Link, as they move similarly and can feasibly have very similar animations. Special moves might have to change a bit, but overall, Toon Link can be a good foundation for her build.

Of course.

But then Nintendo livestreams a Splatoon2 tournament for Japan the literal day after, so they seem pretty okay with Livestreaming **** again.

Time to twist the mood a bit. Who are your 10 most wanted characters this time around?
Here was my list from April, may as well give you the full 20, in no particular order.

Captain Toad
Dr. Eggman
King K. Rool
Cranky Kong
Dixie Kong
Ganon
Ridley
Ruby /Sapphire/Emerald Pokemon Trainer
Fulgore (Killer instinct)
Scorpion
Wolf
Simon Belmont

Bub and Bob (Bubble Bobble)
Ice Climbers
Bomberman
Rayman
Snake
Rash (Battletoads)
Banjo Kazooie
Crash Bandicoot

Some big long shots there.

Think I had Waluigi,, Andy, Gengar and Hawlucha on the fringes.

Everyone is way too jumpy with DLC.
You can not predict what it will be.
Spring Man will be a likely DLC candidate if he is not confirmed, that is for sure.
In fact, Spring Man is a little bit likely before DLC. Just a little bit.

It's a New Super Marios Bros U port and probably will be announced in the direct. It was leaked by creditable leakers.
And you know what the sad part of this is?

This is still gonna sell more than the Wii U counterpart, and then people who will complain about it weirdly disappear lmao
Wonder where they went after... let's see, Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker, DKC: Tropical Freeze, Bayonetta 2... Looks like we got a mystery on our hands, Scoobs!

I’m kinda worried about death within Nintendo at this point. Sure, it didn’t hit Nintendo, but employees and otherwise don’t necessarily sit at headquarters all year.

Little things like the minigames and the Coin Launcher and stuff just like the Masterpieces are the small extra details that just completely add to the charm of the game and show that they really did make this game with lots of love, at least to me.

It's this charm that I ultimately felt wasn't really apparent in 4. Heck, the damn title alone is kinda lazy.

I can see this being Sakurai's last Smash game and then at most if he gets involved with any future installments he'll simply be a producer.

After this I feel he should go back to doing smaller projects like new Kirby or Kid Icarus games but not before taking a loooonnnnng vacation.

This reminded me of a thought I had at work today, do you think Sakurai ever misses working on Kirby games? It is a franchise he created, and has stayed pretty consistant in quality throughout the years. He stopped working on them because he did not want to just work on the same series again and again, but that is kind of what has happened with Smash Bros... I would love to see what a modern Kirby game with Sakurai in charge would be like.

No one will argue the man is the Deity of Overwork and needs a vacation.

^This.

Sad thing is I've actually heard people are sending hate to Nintendo for delaying it. Like, what the hell. I know I shouldn't too surprised knowing how people can be, but geez. Cut them a break. People's lives were lost over there. I'm sure plenty of people at Nintendo themselves may been at risk as well, not to mention their families, friends and homes.

If nothing else, it seems like they've gotten pats it fairly quickly, considering the Splatoon livestream. Still doesn't excuse all the legitimate hate they've apparently gotten, though.

"The title was lazy?"
You are so wrong.
The title is much better than the three previous Smash games.

And also was still a Sheik clone in Toon form. It's clear he knew of Tetra's popularity. That's what I meant earlier. But that's not a consideration.

He has not once spoke about the Toon Zelda/Toon Sheik. And file names are very very clear in most cases. They're either a placeholder that is a Mario file, a series name, or an actual character name. I can't remember a single case where he gave a character file a completely illogical name. He blatantly meant a toon clone at the time.

I do not believe he would've stayed with Toon Sheik, but being he also asked for a new design as a TP-style Sheik, he would've easily done the same for Toon Sheik if he was set on her being the option over Tetra. I think he would've went with Tetra as a unique character unless a clone was the only option. Plus, Tetra didn't have anyone to clone off of and very few known fighting moves within her series at the time. A few moves via WW due to items she gives to Link, but that's kind of it. HW added things that make her a far more interesting addition nowadays. Back then, she didn't much going for her beyond popularity, realistically.

Ugh I know right? That really sickens me. Those people shouldn't even call themselves fans if they think games are more important then lives.

I agree on Coin Launcher but Masterpieces... I'm sorry but Masterpieces are pretty pointless.

You can barely play them because the time limits are way too strict.

I wish they'd let the new series die. I want a 2d Mario game with a 2d artstyle.
Can I give you advice?
Nintendo will never give up on their new series.

I hope everyone is recovering well in Japan. I am still sorry to hear what happened.

I mean, 64's was apparent by the fact that half the damn titles on the console had "64" shoehorned onto it as if you didn't know the console you were playing it on.

But at least we don't have "Super Smash Bros. for the Nintendo Switch"

The time was too strict indeed, but it was a fantastic concept none of the less.

On one hand, I really like that the Wii U ports are increasing access to a bunch of great games.

On the other, I'm immensely regretful of my Day 1 Wii U purchase ;/

Like at this point the unique library of AAA games are Xenoblade X and Mario Maker.

That's what I assume would Sakurai was doing with that title - a placeholder. I figure Toon Zelda was probably a Zelda clone, whereas Tetra was "Toon Zelda's Sheik." Who may have even had a similar moveset. But given the observable demand for Tetra - as opposed to Toon Zelda - specifically, I find it hard to believe Sakurai opted to make the latter instead of the former.

Am the only one who thought "Super Smash Bros. Switch" would've actually been a legitimately cool title?

Ultimate is a much better and appropriate name now that we know what the game is gonna be like, but still.

At this point, I don't mind if Nintendo waits until next Thursday to do the Direct. It's just a bunch of video game news. It's really not that important, ESPECIALLY compared to the situation over there.
I doubt Japan's feeling in the mood for a Direct after the tragedy that just occurred.
I'm hoping Japan just gets the help it needs.

ah but don’t forget that the Wii U is still great as the Virtual Console with access to basically everything except GCN, 3DS, and Switch games. Maybe not all of them but a fair amount for sure

The point was to give you a taste of th3 gameplay to coerce you into purchasing the full game on VC, 'cause they obviously ain't putting 30 minutes from one of their titles on the system, as ending it so late would give people even more of a foul taste in their mouths after having gotten immersed.

Toon Sheik was Toon Sheik. He would've listed Tetra if that's who he meant.

He does not throw in random placeholders for the sake of it. Tetra is not "Wind Waker's Sheik", she's a completely different character that has remote similarities. It's like how Ike and Roy have remote similarities in Brawl and Melee. But otherwise are completely different.

Yes, all the evidence suggests he meant a clone at the time. We don't know what could've changed, but seeing a Toon Sheik is not odd in the slightest. He makes OC's for Smash. Giga Bowser is proof of that.

Kirby I don’t see him coming back to unless he had a change of heart when it comes to his past Kirby problem, but another Kid Icarus I need regardless of who makes it

Maybe right now you are, but there were some who wanted this game to have the Smash 4 was of naming a Smash game

God I'm not looking forward to the first 4chan post that gets the CoroCoro/Famitsu early and posts it.

Hours will be had debating "IT'S REAL!" "NO, IT'S FAAAAAAKE!"
