Official Smash Ultimate Discussion

Almost one month has passed since release. In retrospect....

  • This is by far the best Smash ever. Like, I don't even know how they will top this.

  • Pretty freakin' good; I have a few qualms over things like internet play, balancing issues, etc.

  • It's ok, but [insert Smash game here] is better.

  • I'd rather play Parcheesi.

Man today was supposed to be different… of all days, **** had to happen. Meh… I hope Nintendo is well enough tomorrow to at least give us the next possible date

My gut kind of wants to say the newcomer reveal (if there is any; I think it's all but certain to happen) will be Geno, but another part of me thinks he'd be saved up for a day much closer to the release date.

Then again, we got some other massive bombshell newcomers revealed on E3 and the first Smash direct back in August, so it's really difficult to say.

People on twitter still insisting that Skullkid "video" is real. It's a friggin second of skullkid moving awkwardly that was recorded with someone's phone, meanwhile people claimed they had the whole direct to leak and haven't shown anything except that. It's such BS.

What fighting game character archetype do you guys feel is most clearly missing from Smash, and what character do you feel like would be the best fit for the role?

For me, we're missing a true bizarro character- something along the lines of Voldo from Soul Calibur, a character whose movements and personality are designed to disturb.

I think the best fit Nintendo could pull for this would be Fawful from Mario & Luigi, with all of the strange outfits and theatrics he does.
(Although this could honestly be taken by - dare I say it?- Waluigi, and I'd be pretty thrilled)

Grappler.

We lack a dedicated Zangief.

I guess it's just fun tearing them apart, but not fun realizing how much info we crave in the first place. It's a cycle here, it seems.

Well people said that about K. Rool but it didn't turn out that way.
Well I said at least to me; and that's coming from a person that is a waaaaaaay bigger fan of King K. Rool than Geno.

Not to mention, given how Sakurai has expressed how much he wanted Geno and the fact he was the only mii fighter costumes to receive a splash screen. He definitely has some warrants a bigger occasion granted his history.

But that's just me.

Saturday, Sunday or Monday are the most logical dates for the Nintendo direct. After that seems difficult due to the famitsu column.

I'm also guessing Isaac. Only because the twitter picture hint/reference is much more concrete in my opinion. And if we assume it was a hint I would expect that Isaac would be one of the next to be revealed. Would be odd to me to make a hint like that and then save him for later.

The chair thing could be a hint as well, but I think that being a reference to Skull Kid is much less definitive. There very well could be a hint in the background a la the direct pre K Rool (which I do believe was a hint), but I'm not confident in making any predictions based on that given that, at least to me, the hint is significantly more vague.

You know what Retro character should really be revived for Smash?

Stanley The Bugman, espically since he was given an 3D model made from the ground up in Melee.

The only problem is that he would technically be a DK character...which would him way below the likes of Dixie, Funky etc.

Speaking of Retros, how come there isn’t much talk of them regarding Ultimate?
We’ve gotten at least one or two every game starting with Melee so another one is guaranteed.

In Melee? A trophy, I assume?

The problem with Geno as a final reveal is the gaming community, even the Nintendo community, at large won't consider him a hype reveal. Geno isn't a good way to finish off strong...not that Sakurai does that anyway. So maybe Geno is last reveal.

A problem I got with the furniture theory is that K.Rool wasn't even the next newcomer after Ridley to be shown, it was Simon. So, say Isaac or Incineroar get revealed next, but Skull Kid gets shown at some point after them. Does that mean the theory was right or does it get tossed because he wasn't the immediate newcomer?

It's just too weird of a theory for me get behind it, I'm not gonna toss it out either... But I will say the Rathalos screenshot tweet feels like a way more substantial "hint" towards Isaac than the furniture does for Skull Kid. Imo, anyways.

There's a bit of that with WFT tbh. Not in a creepy way or anything, but in terms of her attacks and hitboxes being odd. Her regular movement isn't really bizarre at all though.

People tend to bring up grappler as an archetype that we are missing, but I have to say I'm not even sure what that would really mean in the context of Smash. Having said that if it could be made to work (in a meaningful way) I'd love to see it.

Kinda taking this and going kind of a different direction. As a fighting game enthusiast...

Most iconic: Scorpion
Most likely: Heihachi
Most controversial: Hitomi
Most nolstalgic: Fulgore
Most influential: Terry Bogard
Most visible: Morrigan
Most intriging: Yugo the Wolf
Most fitting: Nightmare
Most hilarious: Bad Mr Frosty
Most needed: Hulk Hogan as a grappler

My boi is a weird combination of 2 archetypes: rushdown and heavyweight. I could imagine Boshi getting in but with more of a focus on one or the other...

The main reason nobody is talking about them is that Sakurai said he hopes we don't expect too many newcomers in this game, and the sheer amount of Echo Fighters and limited amount of new stages seems to further evidence that we aren't going to get the same amount of new content that we've become accustomed to, meaning things such as "WTF" and retro characters are likely in danger of not having high enough priority to make it in over the fan favorite picks that Sakurai seems to be favoring this time (or more relevant picks such as Inklings or a new Pokémon). Further silencing talks of retro newcomers is the early reveal of fan-favorite retro representative Takamaru as an Assist Trophy, leaving few obvious picks.

A Stand fighter. No, Rosalina doesn't count. I want something straight out of Heritage for the Future.

Got deconfirmed two days ago. I'm going to assume you didn't bother to read the leak or you would have realized that it was fake.
Yeah, too many pop up all the time and are too numerous to keep up with them all. Plus I'm not on this site for hours every day. EmbarrassEmbarrassEmbarrass

I kind of feel like a character for my typical playstyle is absent from Smash 4. I mained Puff in 64, Puff with YL secondary in Melee, and Puff/Fox/Sheik in Brawl. I don't know what it is, but it just felt like something was...missing for me in 4. Maybe it was the mechanics changes too (buffed recoveries & free air dodging are big detriments for me, since Puff lives & dies off gimps & WOP). Which is why I am optimistic for Ultimate, since the latter "strategy" is more exploitable.
MWAHAHA...

A defensive character based entirely around counters and poking. Not like the characters with a counter, I'm talking straight up a ton of special moves being based on counters. Like Hakumen's drive or Geese's counter grabs.
