Hello Smashboards.......I'm back (after like 3 years maybe, don't remember).

Ok, so this post is a poll survey poll I have set up and asked multiple groups across Facebook as well as on YouTube. I want to see what the most requested characters would be for the next new Smash Bros. Who you think stands a chance. Who you think makes sense. I will calculate the results in a YouTube video (as well as a list most likely).

The two questions are:

1. What are FIVE new Nintendo characters you would like to see in Smash Bros 5?

2. What are FIVE new third party characters you would like to see in Smash Bros 5?

You don't have to state reasons for why you think they should be in if you don't want to but it is there if you choose to. And of course this is only taking into account characters out now or out shortly in the future as we have no idea what new games get made and what new characters will catch the eye of Nintendo, especially given we likely have a few more years before we even hear of the next Smash. But it will show what the Smash community thinks as of now. I hope to calculate the results (as I intend to ask multiple gaming groups this same survey) and put into a future YouTube video for my channel.

Anyway, quick question. If we hadn't gotten Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, would people still think that a Smash 4 Port is likely?

It is possible because other games got the Switch port treatment like Pokken but not as likely. More people would easily be on wanting Smash 5.

Amongst here, all the groups I have asked on Facebook, and on my YouTube channel they are at some 20ish votes. Almost everyone that responded to me listed them.

Other top Nintendo choices have been Spring Man, Ribbon Girl, K. Rool, Rex, Isaac, a character from the new upcoming Fire Emblem, and Decidueye.

I don't really care for third party characters too much. The above two are the only ones I'd care for, really. Most of the common ones are either from games not on Nintendo consoles or from games I didn't play - or at least too little to get attached to them. B&K, DQ Hero, Chrono, Belmont, Sora, Klonoa and Rayman just don't do much for me. Crash, Ratchet, Jak moreso, but I wouldn't even dream of those.

These two I could get behind because they'd bring in a new audience, or to 'reward' indie studios for working with Nintendo.

Let's see....picking just a top five is gonna be tough for me, but I think I can narrow it down....just barely, though.

...seeing as this was more "wants" or "would likes" than "expectations", I'd go with lists like this at the top of my head. Definitely see the likes of Inkling and Rex making it, for example, but I'm personally not too invested in supporting them.

I'd argue Bandana Dee being more iconic than a few characters on that list, but that's not the thing I really wanted to talk about.


A lot of people have created this false rule that newcomers must be of a higher or equal iconic level as the other characters from their fellow franchise. While I can understand why people would think this, it's just not true at all. Characters with genuine chances of making the roster are getting completely wrote off by users because, "We already have all the characters that we need for this franchise," or, "They're just not important enough like the rest of the characters." I'm sure people are tired of Rosalina being brought up as a counter argument, but her inclusion speaks volumes about this topic. If the the 30 year-old head honcho franchise of Nintendo can get a character in Smash who was, at the time she was decided, barely pushing past the 5 year mark since her debut, why couldn't the same thing happen to Zelda or Kirby?

Bandana Dee is not on the same level as the other 3; I can acknowledge that. However, is there any other Kirby character left who's more iconic than Bandana Dee? Since his debut, the little fellow has been making appearances non-stop, some of which include him as a playable character. Saying that he would be such a low priority is like denying the chances of ANY Kirby character getting in Smash.

I AM denying the chances of ANY Kirby newcomers getting into Smash 5. And your Rosalina argument doesn't work. Rosalina was insanely popular, especially among Mario fans. She's infinitely more popular than Waddle Dee.

Or if this character appeared in this many games and that character appeared in that many games. What concerns me when we are talking about likelihood is if the character in question is popular or iconic.

That's why someone from only two games like Wii Fit Trainer is more likely than a Waddle Dee. That's why someone like Pauline, from one of the most popular arcade games of all time as well as one of the most popular games of 2017, is more likely than Waddle Dee in my opinion. Because these characters draw a bigger audience. And if you ask me, both of them have much bigger achievements under the belt being actual stars of incredibly well selling games.

Is your argument seriously, "WFT was more likely than Bandana Dee because she appeals to a larger audience,"? WFT is iconic, yes, but nearly the entirety of the Wii Fit "fanbase" has probably never shown interest in competitive gaming, let alone Smash. WFT got in because of fantastic sales and Sakurai, not because Nintendo thought they could appeal to a bunch of middle-aged adults.

I do find it odd that Isaac somehow got more votes than Ridley so far.

One has an easier moveset/feels more likely to get in due to balance issues, so that could be why. It also helps that Isaac is playable in all 3 Golden Sun games, and the main protagonist of the series, the "Marth" if you will. So that can help determine one's choices.

We're talking about the Nintendo world as a whole. Every franchise is always going to have "the next most iconic character". That doesn't make them iconic outside their universe.

WFT got in because of fantastic sales and Sakurai, not because Nintendo thought they could appeal to a bunch of middle-aged adults.

I mean that's just straight up wrong. Wii Fit Trainer was not added to Smash to appeal to middle aged adults. That's the craziest insult-excuse for a character's addition I've ever heard.

No. She was DEFINITELY more popular than either of those two. And we're talking about the main stream Mario series here.


What?! Are you out of your mind? ROSALINA isn't an iconic Mario character?! Are you serious?!


We're talking about the Nintendo world as a whole. Every franchise is always going to have "the next most iconic character". That doesn't make them iconic outside their universe.

Even NOW I'd say Rosalina isn't an iconic character. She's getting there, and she's definitely important, but I'd even hesitate to call Daisy and Waluigi truly iconic.
I WOULD say, though, that she is as iconic to Mario as Bandana Dee is to Kirby.
