Official Smash Ultimate Discussion

Almost one month has passed since release. In retrospect....

  • This is by far the best Smash ever. Like, I don't even know how they will top this.

  • Pretty freakin' good; I have a few qualms over things like internet play, balancing issues, etc.

  • It's ok, but [insert Smash game here] is better.

  • I'd rather play Parcheesi.

Who is the more popular choice, Tails as a unique fighter or Shadow as an echo? I know I’d rather Tails.
I know it's Tails for me. My first game ever was Sonic 2, and I always went to the 'choose character' so I could play Tails. For all intents and purposes, it was a Tails game and Sonic only showed up on the intro screen.

That's also one of the main reasons I wouldn't mind (or possibly prefer) Tails as a Sonic echo. He could just get Peach's float ability and it'd work really well. I liked seeing Tails spin-dash since he ended up as an orange ball with tails. (and then just have him whirl the tails for an up throw, echoes can have different anims!)

That being said, Shadow (& Knuckles) are both more popular than the fox. Shadow's also a much easier echo of Sonic.

It's just be annoying if Sonic's first partner ends up stuck in the GHZ loop while Knuckles and Shadow both get promoted. Yes, I know he's been seen back there already, but I'm still holding out hope that that came from a port and they still have time to change it. :crying:

When I was making my timeline it was interesting how much the "characters I didn't know" section shrank as time went on. By Sm4sh there was no character included who I didn't at least recognise, and I wasn't part of the speculation scene at the time.

The true power of Smash is taking a character or series you know little or nothing about and making you a fan.
It's really something. I decided to play Fire Emblem Awakening because I wanted to "find out who all these Anime guys on the roster are".
I first saw Ashley in Smash, actually.

Samus and Zero Suit Samus don’t match their latest models, just lazy/butchered ports of their Smash 4 models.

Literally only boob size are different (and that better not be the only “legitimate” problem you still have)

So I guess I can join this Smash timeline thing that people are doing.

Smash 64: I wasn't born yet when it came out and I played it after Melee, so this one doesn't count.

Melee: First Smash Bros. game. Got it when I was very young. Recognized :ultmario::ultluigi::ultpeach::ultbowser::ultdk::ultyoshi::ultpikachu::ultjigglypuff::ultmewtwo::ultpichu:, since I had really only heard of Mario and Pokemon at that point. It was one of my first Gamcube games, but I owned Mario Kart: Double Dash!! and Pokemon Channel beforehand.

Brawl: At this point, I had played a lot more games, but I was still in elementary school when Brawl came out. It was the first game I ever got on launch day. Out of the newcomers, I recognized :ultmetaknight::ultwario::ultpokemontrainer::ultdiddy::ultsonic::ultkingdedede::ultolimar::ultlucario::ultrob:, since I either knew about or played a game they were in (Wario and Diddy Kong in various Mario games, Meta Knight and Dedede in Kirby Air Ride, Sonic in various Sonic games, Pokemon Trainer and Lucario from various Pokemon media, Olimar from Pikmin 2, and R.O.B. from Mario Kart DS).

Smash 4: The first game I actively speculated for (see my join date). Found these boards pretty close to E3 of 2013 while I was desperate for more info. So, I recognized every newcomer when they showed up except :ultwiifittrainer:, who I really didn't care to notice existed even though I owned Wii Fit.

Ultimate: I knew I would be in college by the time a new Smash Bros. game came out, and that is what happened. Still participated in speculation, so I expected to know every newcomer when they showed up. And then :ultrichter: was revealed and I was proven wrong.
Let's do this.

Smash 64: N/A as far as playing it goes, but I was 5 when it came out. Still haven't played it to this day. I was gonna grab it on the Wii Shop after Ultimate's announcement, but I can't since you can't add Points anymore. :laugh:

Melee: I was 7 when it came out, but IIRC I was 8 when I first played it. I recognised basically everyone except for the Fire Emblem characters, Samus, Ness and Mr. Game & Watch. Despite knowing nothing about FE, I mained Roy. I was a kid and I liked fire and swords!

Brawl: 14, and I played it on release. I didn't recognise Pit, Olimar, Ike, Lucas or R.O.B.

Smash 4: 20, played it on release. Recognised everyone.

Smash Ultimate: 24, and it releases almost exactly a month before my 25th! And I recognise everyone. Although I am ashamed to admit I didn't recognise Richter immediately; now I've played Rondo of Blood and Richter Mode in Portrait of Ruin I certainly won't be making that mistake again!

So, which previously cut characters were you most excited to see return? For me, they would be Squirtle, Ivysaur, and Pichu!

Young Link is the biggest one for sure, but I'm also really excited for PT and Pichu. I'm not too interested in the others, but I'm happy they're back all the same!

Here’s my timeline:

Smash 64 (Age 2 but didn’t play it until I was 5 or 6) The only characters I knew were Mario, Donkey Kong, Yoshi, Pikachu, Jigglypuff, Kirby and technically Luigi but my friend who owned it never unlocked Luigi, Cap, or Ness

Melee: (Got it for 7th birthday): This is where I met Doc, Captain Falcon, Ganondorf, Falco, Ice Climbers, Ness, Shiek, Marth, Roy, and Mr. Game & Watch.

Brawl (Age 12): I think I knew who everyone was in this game with the exception of Snake & ROB, however I only knew Ike, Lucas, Wolf, and Olimar because of speculation

Smash 4 (Age 18): Proud to say I knew every character prior to their reveal as I just finished Fire Emblem Awakening right before Robins reveal retailer.

Ultimate (Age 22) : Only Richter has stumped me so far

SPLATTER HOUSE

If there were any retro game I'd love to see get reped despite its absolute irrelevancy itd be Splatter House
I do like making some of the old obscure guys because they're often weird and cool and that's the best.

Wolf and Pichu. Wolf for obvious reasons, and Pichu because I have a soft spot for the little...mouse...thing.

I first saw Ashley in Smash as well. Though unlike you Wario Ware as a whole didn't interest me.

I may or may not have tried Fire Emblem as a result of Smash, I can't actually remember. I had heard of it before Smash, but I can't remember if that stuck until Blazing Sword came out (I think it did).

Pokemon Trainer, hands down. He's the perfect character to represent the Pokemon series and what it's about besides Pikachu itself.
I'm also really excited for Pichu, Ice Climbers and Snake.

I very randomly played FE7 before playing Melee as a kid because my babysitter always brought her GBA with her so I could play.

That being said, I still had no idea who Marth or Roy were when I ended up playing Melee, but at least I knew the game.

Snake!? Snaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaake! i mean Snake and Pokemon trainer as a complete trio. Can't wait to try :ultpokemontrainer: without Pokemon stamina and being able to switch Pokemon mid-air is going to be a big game changer imo. The range of possibilities with this character is just insane now.

Pichu for me. He was my Melee main when I was a kid, and while I wasn't that interested in seeing him return (nor did I expect), the fact he actually did made me really happy. I felt like a kid again seeing Pichu in Smash Ultimate since it's been so long.

I also liked how Pichu was revealed for Smash Ultimate right after the "Everyone is here" was shown in the E3 trailer; showing a character that many thought would never return be revealed after that tag came up really drove the point home that all the veterans were indeed coming back.

64: Played/bought it after Melee
Melee: I knew all the Mario characters, DK, the Pokémon, Link, Zelda, and I believe that’s it.
Brawl: I knew Diddy, Wario, the Pokémon, Sonic, and I believe that’s it.
4: I knew Mega Man, Pac Man, Wii Fit Trainer, Mii’s, Palutena (from Pit’s old Final Smash), Greninja, Bowser Jr, Duck Hunt, Little Mac, Cloud, Ryu, Rosalina, and I believe that’s it.
Ultimate: I knew all beforehand besides Dark Samus (I of course had to see her before playing 4), Simon, and Richter. I learned who Simon was from Verge, Dark Samus from speculation on this site, and Richter when he was announced.

One of the things that ruined Sm4sh for me was that the Trainer got cut. I loved Squirtle in Brawl, and I am undeniably excited to play him again. And yes, transformation mechanics are awesome, and I'm so excited to play the whole team again. But mainly Squirtle.

Beyond Squirtle and Ivysaur, It's great to see Wolf back as well.

I didn't play 64 until after I played Melee and Brawl.

I played and became familiar with a lot more games after Brawl, so I knew who more characters were and wound up actively wanting characters in Smash as a result.

Now that third party characters can also be assist trophies, wich characters do you like to see? Personaly, i'd love to see Arthur from Ghost N' Ghouls (Capcom) and Sparkster (Konami), i think such additions are totally possible.

I can see the discussion is mutating, so let me realign it.
Everyone's talking about who hyped them the most, I'll do you all one better and list my reactions across every series.
With Smash 64, because of the fact that I didn't have it, I'll state my hypothetical reactions instead, the same applies to Melee, which was the first game of the series I played, and I didn't follow it online.

Characters after the | are the "literally who?" characters, the ones I couldn't have had a reaction to, because I had no idea who they were. This doesn't reflect on my later opinion of them, and they are organised by number instead. I'll also include how old I was when the game came out.
Smash 64 [Age 8]: :ultpikachu::ultjigglypuff::ultmario::ultdk::ultyoshi::ultluigi::ultkirby: | :ultlink::ultsamus::ultfox::ultness::ultfalcon:
Melee [Age 11]: :ultmewtwo::ultpichu::ultpeach::ultbowser::ultgnw::ultdoc:| :ulticeclimbers::ultsheik::ultzelda::ultfalco::ultmarth::ultyounglink::ultganondorf::ultroy:
Brawl [Age 17]: :ultsonic::ultsnake::ulttoonlink::ultlucario::ultpokemontrainer::ultike::ultwario::ultdiddy::ultkingdedede: | :ultmetaknight::ultpit::ultzss::ultlucas::ultolimar::ultrob::ultwolf:
Smash 4 [Age 23]: :ultcloud::ultrobin:ultcorrin::ultpalutena::ultlucina::ultrosalina::ultlittlemac::ultbayonetta::ultmegaman::ultryu::ultgreninja::ultmiifighters::ultpacman::ultdarkpit::ultbowserjr::ultduckhunt::ultshulk::ultwiifittrainer::ultvillager:
Ultimate [Age 27]: :ultkrool::ultdaisy::ultchrom::ultsimon::ultrichter::ultinkling::ultdarksamus:

The beauty of Smash is that it can introduce you to new franchises you've never heard of (or you've only ever heard of) and help make you a fan.
The discussion was based on this original post (by me), and was less about who you didn't know, and more about ranking hype for characters in each game when they came out (if possible); and singling out the ones you didn't know, because you couldn't be hype for them at the time.

Not that the change in discussion is bad or anything, just letting people just tuning in know what the discussion originally was.

A tie between Snake and Ice Climbers

Snake, but only due to me thinking Konami would never allow Snake to be free ever again
Ice Climbers cause I genuinely missed the **** out of them after years of hating fights against them

I'm just going to point this out so people don't constantly use the Samus Returns concept art for ZSS, even though I think it's mostly good (Heels BAD).

They didn't use it in-game.
I used the SR concept art only due to it being similar to ZSS in Ultimate (also reminds me of Sheik’s TP design be8ng used for Smash), also yeah the heels are bad...but at least they manage to make her a top tier character
I have to say I like Shadow more. Tails used to be a cool guy who wasn't afraid to stand up to stronger foes like in SA1, but his character has been horribly butchered in recent Sonic games.

Amy and Knuckles have been given better character development than Tails
Third parties have had assist trophies since Brawl.
I think he means 3rd parties who don’t have playable reps for their series
Smash bring the dream back to life, Sega is awful!!
Swag allowed the Sonic Boom tv series to be a thing...even though Cartoon Network might’ve killed it

I'd love some Soul Calibur representation. As cool as Ivy as playable (or a Nightmare/Siegfried echo) would be, Tekken is a much more impactful and famous franchise that didn't end up in the toilet for the past 10 years or so. It'd be fun to see either of them in at least as assists.

Fun fact: high-heeled shoes weren't even "meant" for women when they were first created, or even necessarily meant for walking in.

They were originally created for horse-riding (the elongated heel was meant to lock in to the stirrups to prevent your foot from slipping), if you're wondering why most shoes have that groove leading up to the heel, this is why.

When heels were brought into Europe in the 1700s, they were worn by upper-class men (From Wikipedia: "only someone who did not have to work could afford, both financially and practically, to wear such extravagant shoes.").

Women started wearing heels in about the 1780s; and they went out of fashion for about 50 years starting around 1810.

I'm not discouraged at all from Tails myself by one game even if it's recent. There was still Mania and Sega kept Tails around at least as a supporting character for a good while even after the time they went to play it safe "Only Sonic is playable" for the longest time. It's not like Smash would write him as much of a coward. (Unless they use it to kinda play how he's Sonic's Luigi in his trailer and he bumps into Luigi for a bit of humor if he got a trailer as a unique/semi-clone character. Wouldn't mind that at least)

Lost World he was hardly a coward though some people saw the opposite problem in he was a bit of an asshole. I get that Tails' characterization in recent games hasn't exactly been the best but for me it doesn't exactly ruin my want for him in Smash.

Wow, I feel old. xD And I'm not that old. I'll try to do a timeline, though my memory is really hazy (alright, I guess I'm old).

64 (age 8): The N64 was one of my first consoles that was specifically for me (I played my dad's NES and SNES when I was younger), and Super Mario 64, Banjo & Kazooie, Diddy Kong Racing, and Smash 64 took up most of my time on it. There were some characters I didn't recognize, including some classic characters that I just wasn't aware of: :ultsamus::ultfox::ultness::ultfalcon:. And while I knew of :ultlink:, I hadn't played a game from the Zelda series until BotW. I had :ultdk: 64, but because I didn't have the expansion pak I couldn't play it. In an alternate universe, I'm more hyped for K Rool than Banjo.

Melee (age 10): My parents never got me a Gamecube so I was completely unaware of what Smash was doing at this time.

Brawl (age 17): The Wii was one of the first consoles I got for myself, in my young adult years (my parents still payed for it). I was so happy for :ultsonic: being in the game. (EDIT: I was particularly hyped for :ultpokemontrainer: but didn't like him as much as I wanted to). Of the newcomers, I didn't recognize :ulttoonlink::ultzss:, at least those particular forms of those characters. I definitely didn't recognize :ultmetaknight: (became my main) :ultwolf::ultlucario: (I was kind of done with Pokemon post Gen 2 as I didn't own a handheld after that era), :ultlucas::ultike::ultpit:(a character I grew to love until he got nerfed) :ultrob:. While I kind of recognized Pikmin at the time, I didn't recognize :ultolimar:. And while I didn't recognize :ultsnake: my friend (a Sony guy) loved him and was so excited he was in.

Wii U (age 23): I was questioning whether to get Smash 4, as while I loved Subspace Emissary, I was more of a single player guy and nothing particularly struck me about the game. My friends convinced me to get it so we could all play together, as I was the only one with a Wii U (though my one friend got it and Smash/all the amiibo afterwards). I was most excited for :ultmegaman: and :ultpacman: and shocked they were in the game at all (especially :ultduckhunt: as that was one of the few NES games I played). I did not recognize :ultgreninja::ultrobin:ultlucina::ultpalutena::ultdarkpit: (I knew of Pit from Brawl, but the games were still off my radar) :ultvillager: (I knew he was from Animal Crossing, but otherwise oblivious--my friend loved him) :ultwiifittrainer: (I knew of the games, not the trainer) :ultshulk: (I became a fan of Shirtless Shulk despite knowing nothing about him or his moves for that matter). And I did not recognize any of the newcomer DLC characters :ultcloud::ultryu::ultcorrin::ultbayonetta: (I was like "Who are all these human characters and why are they in Smash?"). I would not have gotten any of the DLC, except my friend (now graduated to Sony fanboy) really wanted me to get :ultcloud: and so I did.

Ultimate (age 27): I was unsure whether I was gonna get it this time around, because after my friends moved, Smash 4 collected virtual dust. Outside of a really awesome single player mode, I wasn't sure if there was anything Smash 5 could do to win me over. I was worried some favorite third party character would get cut, or Bowser Jr, and it would just be the same only portable. So I was actually really hoping for a port. I'm glad I was so wrong, and E3 won me over. Now I was a bit more aware of the speculation, but still not taking a part in it. While I didn't know :ultridley: prior to speculation, I heard the debate, including Gamexplain's literal debate. Same with :ultsimon:, knew the series (especially because of I Wanna be the Guy), but not the character until the speculation/rumors, and definitely had no clue about :ultrichter:. I vaguely heard of :ultchrom: but very little. I knew of :ultkrool: prior to Smash speculation, but was always in the periphery, and I got more into the idea during Smash speculation. (EDIT: There's no character I've yet to be hyped for as all of the Nintendo characters I love are already in the game--except for you know who, and despite now being third party, is still associated with Nintendo in my nostalgic mind)

I've been with the series since the very beginning, but having an on/off, kind of rocky at times, relationship with Smash. I am perhaps way more out of the loop than most, given I mainly only play Nintendo, and even then, only particular games on it. So some of those I didn't recgonize may be a bit disappointing that I knew nothing about (particularly at the age of 23), as I was kind of shocked going back and thinking through my initial impressions. :upsidedown:
