Official Smash Ultimate Discussion

Almost one month has passed since release. In retrospect....

  • This is by far the best Smash ever. Like, I don't even know how they will top this.

  • Pretty freakin' good; I have a few qualms over things like internet play, balancing issues, etc.

  • It's ok, but [insert Smash game here] is better.

  • I'd rather play Parcheesi.

The winner of the last poll was none other than Lanky Kong. Probably because of the potential with his abilities or dead memes. Donkey Kong Jr. was pretty close for that retro appeal, while Tiny and Stanley's followings were nonexistent.

Next up is another controversial one, the idea of Yoshi newcomers despite it being a long shot in the end. Your picks would be either Kamek, the Baby Mario Bros (Yes, Baby Mario and Baby Luigi), Poochy, and Shy Guy.

Have fun.
Your polls are missing a "none of the above" option

The great question though is:
Which feasible third-party character could at least generate as much hype as :4sonic:, :4megaman: and :4cloud: did?
Crash Bandicoot would. Even if he hasn't been a Sony character for a long time, it's marked on his history.

I honestly think Crash could be the next :4cloud:if he ever got in.

Just about everyone knows him and he was a video game icon in the same level :4mario::4sonic:were in the late 90's.

If we were to have some sort of new Yoshi character, I'd probably give that role to Kamek (Provided that in future Yoshi games Kamek actually does something more meaningful than buff an enemy into a boss fight), but to me, I'd say Kamek could easily be fine as an Assist Trophy.

As for what third-party we might see next, I'd say that we might see a Western third-party newcomer alongside a Japanese one in the next Smash Bros. If you ask me, I'd probably go with Rayman or Doomguy. Rayman probably has a fair bit going for him, since Ubisoft seem to be on good terms with Nintendo - even going out of the way for making Rayman his own trophy in Smash Wii U. Doomguy could get in as part of Bethesda's current support for the Switch with Skyrim, DOOM and Wolfenstein II on the platform, so I can imagine him getting in eventually, but probably toned down enough for an E10+/T Rated game.

Not to mention the whole Mario + Rabbids thing. Nintendo must trust them a lot to let them play around with their biggest IP.

Rayman fits in Smash great aesthetically, I just don't see his moveset bringing anything unique to the game.

Honestly when it comes to third party cuts, I think it really depends on why Snake was cut.

If Snake was cut specifically due to Konami or a problem specific to Snake (weapons maybe), I'd say all of them were safe barring unforseen incidents.

If Snake was cut due to a desire of having revolving doors, we have some third parties in trouble.

I really wish we knew why Snake was cut.
It took a decade for someone intelligent to say that. The game developers should of told us a reason why they were cut. Maybe the reason could of actually gave us a hope for Snake in Smash for Switch. My thoughts on why Snake was caught was because of complications with Konami and the game developers just not wanting to ask Konami for Snake, because they know it could be a no. As NSG said, never give up on Snake in Smash for Switch. "Once a Smash Brother, always a Smash Brother!"

Why do you say that?

You could probably make a cool moveset from Rayman 3 alone.

And to no surprise, Kamek was the winner. Interestingly enough, both the Baby Mario Bros and Shy Guy were kind of matched the whole time. Then there's Poochy, lost on the way home.

Tomorrow will mark the beginning of Legend of Zelda and trust me, there are loads of characters to cover if Hyrule Warriors is anything to go by.

He could be a Springman clone :troll:

And unfortunately none of them are likely.
I agree with you. But, if I were to be generous, I would say Skull Kid is a worthy candidate simply because he dawns Majora's Mask. Given how iconic that game (and villian) is among Zelda fans, I would say he's the only real possibility. That's if another Zelda character is considered necessary.

Why do you say that?

Call me irrational, but I don't wanna see any non Japanese third parties. It just feels out of place for me.

Breath of the Wild Link could use slightly better weapons as he progresses. He could start with a moblin club and upgrade along the way. Each weapon breaks after it delivers enough blows to opponents (including hitting shields), which causes him to switch to the next.

As a bonus upgrade, Link has access to Magnesis. He can move an underground treasure chest back and forth along the floor. The mound can pop up enemies and if Magnesis is used long enough, a chest is unearthed and If Link opens it, he receives the best weapon which he can use for the stock.

If Legend Spyro was at all a possibility, I'd be quite happy to see Spyro in Smash.

I don't really see him as being among the more likely third party candidates in any case, at the moment.

Sylux being the next main antagonist won't make a difference. If he were the antagonist of the overall series then he'd have a chance. Being the antagonist of whatever the newest installment is doesn't seem to be a character that usually ends up in Smash.
Well, it helps he was playable in Metroid Hunters. Means he's already an established character, somewhat. And there's not really much to work with from Metroid anyway. Except well, Anthony Higgs. Who should always and forever be fondly remembered I might add! Or a Federation Trooper perhaps? There was a reason they opted for Zero Suit Samus as the second Metroid character... :4zss:

Seeing others say this pleases me, Skull Kid really would be such a great character in Smash, and calling him just another one off is a disservice to the character

His impact of Skull Kid and Majora's Mask has been felt since Majora's Mask released: Twilight Princess, A Link between Worlds, Hyrule Warriors, the first dlc piece decided on in Breath of the Wild, Monster Hunter Stories, Smash Bros 4 (first assist trophy shown, Majora's Mask Mii costume), Melee (Trophy Challenge 3) Links crossbow training (penultimate challenge) the 3D remakes, 3DS themes and special edition, Badge Arcade, animal crossing games.

Majora's Mask along with Ocarina of Time has also been released on every home console since the 64. Same with Twilight Princess since Gamecube
All 3 games feature Skull Kid

I do wish his support thread was more active though, OP of it needs updating

I see the phrase "out of place" tossed around a lot in regards to third party characters (usually ones like Snake or Bayonetta), but when it comes to crossovers, I find it tough to say anything could be out of place. (Unless it's something really visceral in terms of appearance, given that this is still a Nintendo game)

Kirby would be out of place in the Metroid universe, and the same thing could be said for Link in F-Zero or Ness in Donkey Kong Country, but Smash Bros. makes it work. I'm not sure how a character's country of origin changes that.

Well those two have met in Kirby Dreamland 3, if Kirby defeated all the Metroids in a certain level, which were exclusive to that level, Samus would give him a Heart Star, needed to fight the true final bosses

Y'know you seem to have a habit of saying this. Anyway, Rayman has a few things, and as previously mentioned, 3 has good stuff he can use.

My two cents on the Donkey Kong thing, Rare had credit on the DKC designs for the DK cast, hence why Nintendo would often used Donkey Kong Jr. instead. After Rare was bought out by Microsoft and made rubbish, all the stuff they made for DKC became full property of Nintendo, along with the Star Fox Adventures stuff.

Crash Bandicoot would. Even if he hasn't been a Sony character for a long time, it's marked on his history.
It would, even be more hype than Banjo Kazoozie. Crash Bandicoot was almost the PlayStation's main character at one point, and it would make the famous rival trio. Mario, Sonic and Crash Bandicoot ( the console war during the 1990's ). The other character that would cause a lot of hype if they were introduced but has low chances would be Master Chief.
Are you obliged to always act like a jerk?
Just ignore him, he is a troll ( There is an ignore button if you need it ). I like call outs though. :yeahboi:

You guys are so sensitive. What was so bad about wanting to vote for none of the above?

The poll in question didn't really call for a 'none of the above' option (heck, Shy Guy had to be an option because there simply isn't many 'Yoshi' characters to choose from) but I DO see the flaw with not having a none of the above option for most polls. Saying 'just don't vote' isn't a good answer in most cases since your opinion is simply being muted rather than having an 'other' option.

What Metorid bias we will get when Ridley had been completely shot down and I don't see any of the hunters being in a better position?

Well except maybe Sylux IF he's the next main antagonist.
Ridley was shot down by Sakurai, not the entire development team. If Sakurai doesn't step up to the plate for director of the next Smash game, the person who replaces him could have a completely different opinion on Ridley.

Or reject him like Sakurai did. Pretty much anything could happen with Bigley.

Sylux being the next main antagonist won't make a difference. If he were the antagonist of the overall series then he'd have a chance. Being the antagonist of whatever the newest installment is doesn't seem to be a character that usually ends up in Smash.
Heck, we can barely get antagonists in Smash period.

I'm not going to write off Sylux just yet because I don't know the role he'll play in Prime 4, if he even has a role at all. If he does end up being the main antagonist, I think he might have a decent chance, but only because Prime 4 has the potential to sell very well and Metroid doesn't have that many reasonable characters to add in the first place (because Ridley and Dark Samus are pretty much all we've got. Anthony Higgins ain't gettin' in Smash).

I do have to agree with Sakurai that Ridley is too big, but I never thought that. If Sakurai leaves, than Ridley's chances will probably increase. A new director could approve of Ridley and we would have him here in Smash for Switch. I personally disagree with Ridley being added, because shrinking him would honestly look weird. ( Unless you use the old Metroid game series picture of Ridley compared to Samus in size ).

Read this quote again, psychic.
Defeats the purpose of the poll.

If you like none of the options, just don't answer the poll.

Yeah, that was in response to the none of the above comment. What difference does it make? Are you implying that not only is that as good as not having a none of the above option, but psycho josh should have thought of that and agreed before making the original comment?

Honestly, at this point, I could care less if shrinking Ridley makes him look weird. I mained Pikachu in almost every Smash game and I still can't get used to the size difference. In the anime, Pikachu sits on Ash's shoulder. In Smash, he stands almost as tall as Ness. There's not really anything Sakurai or any other director can do to fix this, unless you like the idea of having a micro Pikachu.
