Official Smash Ultimate Discussion

Almost one month has passed since release. In retrospect....

  • This is by far the best Smash ever. Like, I don't even know how they will top this.

  • Pretty freakin' good; I have a few qualms over things like internet play, balancing issues, etc.

  • It's ok, but [insert Smash game here] is better.

  • I'd rather play Parcheesi.

It predicted Richter Belmont along with King K. Rool and Dark Samus.

Though, a point against, it missed Simon. I could be explained by test code but there's no true way to disprove it until we see Gardevoir, Pokeball or character.

Worst case scenario, Gardevoir simply got Isaac'd and we're left hanging forever.
Ah, right, the "I datamined the E3 build one". Yeah, I think we shouldn't give it any credit, actually.

Idk if i can believe the Gothitelle leak. Gardevoir I love but how how could you frogs o much fanservice to gothitelle? It’s like one of the most hated gen 5 Pokémon. Gothita is cute tho lol
But I love Gothitelle, just as much as Gardevoir.

So did he ever say if those were all the newcomers?

I’m curious tbh.
No he said there'd be more coming.

Can someone explain to me why the Gardevoir/Gothilette leak is credible at all? I must have missed something
I think it's because he predicted Richter as an echo back in July.

What makes me doubt it alone is Sablé Prince. His home game wasn’t released outside of Japan, he didn’t do well in the ballot, and just...

I get Lucas was the exception to the Japan only rule as Mother 3 came out just shortly before Brawl but??? Sablé’s game is also pretty old I think, from the SNES days iirc?
Besides, when Lucas was added I think Sakurai thought that his game would be released outside of Japan, so it really was just a shot in the dark.

It could’ve been Takamaru since the timing was right... But I guess Sakurai decided against it for whatever the reason may be.

One of the most hated. To me she looks like if Jynx went goth and grew 3 feet
That's fair enough but your original phrasing indicated a mass backlash where there wasn't one.

Yeah, Prince Sable was in a Game Boy game that was never released outside of Japan. I can't see them adding him when Takamaru was more popular, as proved by his DLC Mii Fighter costume.

Apparently this guy said that he datamine a copy of the demo and found data for Richter Belmont, King K. Rool and Dark Samus (all confirmed) alongside data for Gardevoir, Gothielle listed as a Gardevoir echo and "Mario2".

It isn't, it just said Richter for funsies yet no Simon so people (read: idiots) are taking it seriously

Vanilluxe and Garbodor are divisive yes, but you better just be making a pun on my celly jelly boy and not imply it's bad
I don't have anything against any of them to be honest, those are just the ones I saw the most griping about.

EDIT: WFT's gender is non-spesific and some Pokémon might just be females (like Greninja).
Oh yeah, I use female Wii Fit Trainer so exclusively I forget she has a Male alt.

I also considered adding the Pokémon (other than Mewtwo) to the "Might be female" category after I posted it.
So that's about 12 characters that are uniquely female. And then the other 40-ish are uniquely male. But, you know, I don't mind if it's all male characters as long as we get Isabelle. She's all I'll ask for.
This is more a result of the majority of classical gaming icons being male because they marketed to boys back then than it is a problem with the industry as a whole.

Of course, that meant that icons like Samus and Lara Croft stood out all the more because they were girls. They were awesome badasses that just so happened to be attractive women, and that's inherently appealing.

Just with the amount of fan service and iconic characters we’re getting gothitelle just doesn’t fit in to me. If the leak is true I won’t be happy but whatever. We got wii fit and dark pit last time and I survived those.

GB days, released before Link's Awakening. Sablé’s best bet is as a retro-flavored pick, which I think can skip the "Japan-only" barrier. This is assuming we get a retro character, of course.

Some of Villager's moves aren't even utilized in Animal Crossing, such as the bowling ball, so who's to say that Isabelle can't use moves like the bowling ball too? If Villager can use moves that aren't canon to his series, then so can Isabelle
Just saying, but, in the event that she gets in and she isn’t unique, that doesn’t stop them from replacing things in her move set with things that are unique and fit her better but function about the same, such as replacing the bowling ball with a stack of paperwork, and replacing the slingshot with a party popper that shoots confetti.

Still, I do think a lot of people here are underestimating the possibility of Isabelle being a unique character. But, there’s no way to be sure yet.

My problems with the datamine leak are (aside from Gothitelle):
1. He didn’t grab a screenshot. The Royu datamine had screenshots iirc
2. Cloud, Corrin and Bayonetta were just named “Mario” in the datamine, there’s never been a number following it unless that’s changed
3. I think he also said “welp we’re getting Richter instead of Simon”

So how do you see the rest of the information being revealed? Small segments in a couple directs before launch? Think they'd do a second smash direct if there's enough info? A mini smash direct perhaps?

I don't know that there's enough information left to reveal to warrant a whole other smash direct, as they've basically had 2 so far. I think they'll have small segments in Nintendo directs, which I think there will be 2 more before release. They could do a mini smash direct, but that's a lot of focus on just one game.
I think there'll be one more direct. I mean, after all, he still has the rest of the newcomers to talk about as well as the two blurred out menu options. Aside from that, there still could be more stuff in the game that we don't know about yet. After all, he's the one working on the game, not us, so how can we say that we already have most of the new info? I think there's still more new stuff for him to show off.

True. She could also use her paws/claws instead of the boxing gloves that Villager uses.

Real talk, as heart-breaking as it would be, I would be relived if one of the blog posts is just Gardevoir as a Pokeball summon.

It's the same nonsense the Ridley base had to go through back in 4 that I want to avoid. That was painful to watch.

Honestly, we need more girls in this game.
Adding a character purely because it's a female is a poor reason for adding a character.

Most of the characters that have been revealed so far are mostly men, and Sakurai knows that girls play Smash just like guys do.
I didn't know girls were only allowed to play with only female characters.

I agree. Also I don't think that they would completely remove some character (like Simon) for a demo not to be released to the public. Removing data from a game might make it a lot more unstable, so doing that with some characters is quite dangerous, and if they really went that extra mile for avoiding leaks, they would have removed those datas as well.

The King K Rool costume reveal was the first time I think I was legitimately crushed over a videogame and I had a hard time processing it.

So I understand.

I think the most devastating disconfirmation so far was Ashley, she had a lot going for her and there was a lot of hype for her inclusion, only for her to be unofficially shown off at the Direct and not even be mentioned by name...

It was a devastating blow towards her fanbase as well due to drama surrounding her inclusion.

If we were going to get a female character, Chun Li would be the best choice. Reasonably adaptable moveset, guarantees a T rating and if development time doesn't allow (which it likely wouldn't) then she could just be a Ryu echo that nobody would see coming.

Of course they would need to be unique and have personality, but if the girl fits, she should be added.

Well, if he really wanted to complete gens 1 to 6 by having a rep for each, Gothitelle and Gardevoir are both Psychic with similar body types. It would be a simple way to deal with Gen representation.

I’m indifferent to it’s legitimacy, but I would accept that reason if it happened.

Ehhh I figure Nintendo probably doesn't enjoy having young girls fight it out with older, muscular men. It's kinda different for Ness/Lucas because they're fighters in their own series, but I don't remember Ashley having been a fight in any Warioware game.

oh woops

eh, I know a bunch of people who have the mentality that one should be limited to the same gender when picking a character in a videogame.

sadly

I very much doubt this is the reason Ashley isn't in.

Like severely doubt.

Yeah I'm not like that. If a guy wants to play as a girl (such as myself) then that's fine. And if a girl wants to play as a guy, that's fine too. I see nothing wrong with that.

I’m sorry but this is actually a really stupid argument, ages don’t matter and plus she’s 15.

And even then we already have Wendy in Smash so the argument is moot anyways.

I mean I usually pick my own gender because there are some really hot male characters in smash especially with Richter being in the game. But I enjoy hopping around with Skeik every now and then.

Something I consider a bit of a silver lining to her reveal is that, because she's waving her wand, it looks like she's waving to her fans.

I think it says more about a person if they can only relate to characters who are exactly like them in every way than it does about the character.

See: Kathleen Kennedy on Leia and Padme in Star Wars.

Aside from the fact that this clearly isn't the case (see Pokemon, Fire Emblem, etc), Ashley's also been in three fights already in WarioWare.

If Nintendo kept out Ashley because they didn't want her fighting muscular older men like Snake and Ryu, then why are they okay with Ness fighting the very suggestive and flirty Bayo?

Weird potential match-ups should not be a reason to exclude a character.

The male:female ratio in Smash is pretty bad yeah, so I would really appreciate more female fighters

I'm a guy who likes to play as girls...if I like the character and moveset.

That being said, I think it was really nice getting so many girls last game, it showed there are a lot of important/interesting female characters around. And Ultimate already gave us Daisy, Leaf, Inkling and Pikachu. I wouldn't object more (I want Dixie and Isabelle) but this is already far better than what we got in Brawl.

I guess Nintendo really thinks that Wario Ware is too much of a spinoff for there to be a serious inclusion into Smash Bros... It be like if the Pants guy from Yoshi's Island got in.

True. She could also use her paws/claws instead of the boxing gloves that Villager uses.
It’d be cute if they adjusted the animation and facial expressions for her jab so that it becomes Luigi Dash Attack style arm flailing, ahaha

Not to mention Nana looks to be around that age, and in the E3 direct she got destroyed by Bowser. Also, female Villager is probably around that same age, too. So yeah, 'not looking old enough' probably wouldn't be a factor.

I very much doubt this is the reason Ashley isn't it.

I think it's probably because he had trouble finding a moveset for Ashley. But that's just my guess.

Yeah, she could look away with her eyes closed while swiping at the opponent as if to say that she doesn't want to fight them
