Official Smash Ultimate Discussion

Almost one month has passed since release. In retrospect....

  • This is by far the best Smash ever. Like, I don't even know how they will top this.

  • Pretty freakin' good; I have a few qualms over things like internet play, balancing issues, etc.

  • It's ok, but [insert Smash game here] is better.

  • I'd rather play Parcheesi.

I was going to ask this on a Karate Joe or Rhythm Heaven topic, only to realise there isn't one.

How would you feel if Karate Joe became playable. But as a clone of Ryu? Maybe he could lack the street fighter but doesn't need them for strength. Basically be Rye easy mode like Lucina is kinda a Marth easy mode.
I like Ryu being independent, and really? Before you all say ROB and Mr. Game and Watch, those guys had nice independent tools and were basically the main tool in their games that no one played for a while. I feel like Rhythm Heaven characters are a bad idea. Karate Joe would not appeal to many fans including me, and that is why Sakurai cut Takamaru from Smash 4 and made him into an assist trophy. Karate Joe does not have enough population for him to make it in. Karate Joe would be a decent assist trophy role, but we have Knuckle Joe. I guess you can make Karate Joe work as an assist trophy, but a Smash fighter? No.

Actually, there's nothing to suggest Takamaru was ever playable at first. Just that he considered him, but due to having no English release and was basically niche outside of Japan, got an AT role instead.

I think a Rhythm Heaven character could work, but I feel like the gameplay could be hard to work with as a gimmick. Mind you, it's not like that can't hold a character back too(Zelda, Pokemon Trainer, Lucario, all held back by their gimmicks. Most notable examples too).

As long as it's not too complex the rhythm gimmick could be fun. Marth and WFT are characters that show precise timing of buttons can work. Examples of a potential rhythm moveset are a Built to Scale B projectile where pressing B as the 2 squares meet create an even stronger projectile instead of a weak cylinder projectile, or a Chorus Kids smash attack where pressing A at the right time on the last hitbox shoots the opponents away for maximum knockback.

At this point, i'd say Tingle has more chances than Ghirahim because at least he has potential to be a joke character such as wft, puff or pichu

I would not consider WFT a joke character, what makes her a joke character? Pichu is a joke character because of how bad she is and her movset hurting her. Jigglypuff is a joke character because of rest and it dying when it's shield breaks ( unless you got a ceiling right on you ). WFT does not have that properties to make her a joke character, and I heard the Wii Fit series did well with cash.

WFT isn't a joke character.

He/She is the unexpected "why the ****?" character no one saw coming.

Well i laughed a lot when i first saw wft's reveal and instantly decided that i would main her (didn't happen but at least i still enjoy her a lot while playing casually). Being a joke character isn't necessarily a bad thing in my book.

You're not getting the meaning of "joke character"

A joke character is a character who has been purposefully designed to be bad. Think Dan from Street Fighter or, for a Smash example, Pichu.

They're not necessarily the worst character, but they stand out because they were made with the intention of them being awful instead of it being due to balance issues and metagame stuff like other characters.

WFT simply does not fit that mold.

Pretty sure that's what got WFT to low tier, not a joke character status.

Puff is also considered top tier in melee so there's that.
I never brought up Puff. Shiny did.

Also seriously, just hear everyone's reaction to her reveal
https://youtu.be/Iktxi6tPBPw

She's definitely a joke character for most people.

Good lord. All of my responses are just as what as their making me out to be. Who's to say Ghirahim is even a one shot villain. Sometimes, I feel like I'm facing armies who receives likes in chain format of a magnet.

Adding a one time Goron or Zora is no more desperate than adding a one time villain.

Honestly, I usually skip your posts because your choice in word texts strains my eyes to death.

But as of now, he IS a one-shot villain. So I'll ask again, what makes the likes of a Zora or Goron character, like Mipha or Daruk, so seemingly out of place in comparison to Ghirahim?

The fact his only main appearance was Skyward Sword which was two main games ago (LBW, BotW).

Yeah he might have a main game appearance in future but the same can be said for numerous other characters.

Categorizing Mipha or Daruk as a Zora or Goron character seems an unnecessary qualification since that really has nothing to do with why they'd be included.

If a champion were to make it in, it'd be due to their prominence within the series and their feasibility. Probably to a lesser extent popularity. And it's true other characters within the series may eclipse them in one or some or all of those categories, but that doesn't invalidate the merits they do have, nor does it outweigh Smash's tendency to draw from the past few years disproportionately.

Ghirahim has merits too, but he doesn't have the recency, which will ultimately prove a major hindrance. If you were to open the gates to all Zelda characters, past and present, he'd stand a greater chance, sure, but he'd still be outmatched by even more popular, even more prevalent characters.

Unfortunately Ghirahim didn't even get a costume reference in botw like Skull Kid and Midna.

I, to an extent, see what he's talking about. Wii Fit Trainer is a pretty hilarious character, incorporating a bunch of yoga poses and exercises into her moveset. "Joke Character" probably isn't the correct terminology, as Pichu is categorized that way, but still.

...Now that I think about it each of the Smash games have had at least one character like this. Super Smash Bros. had Ness, who had a baseball bat and used a bunch of magic abilities that were high-risk high-reward. Melee had Mr. Game & Watch who moved around in various frames and attacked with a bunch of random objects. Brawl arguably had a couple - Wario was in his WarioWare outfit (which to my understanding was a pretty small series at the time) and had a bunch of crazy attacks like Wario Waft and Wario Bike, King Dedede just threw his minions around and danced in his Final Smash, and R.O.B. was... well... R.O.B. Smash 4 has the aforementioned Wii Fit Trainer, and Duck Hunt and Villager could fit this category as well.

Wonder what characters of this calibur Smash 5 will provide us.

Because Link doesn't have nearly as good of a fashion sense as he does :troll:
Good point sir, good point.
The only joke characters are Jigglypuff and Pichu, that is it. The three main "What?" characters would be :4wiifit:,:4rob:and:4gaw:. Thse cahracters just appeared out of random in my opinion, but they did make their move set work properly. Game and Watch was the suprise character in Melee, ( :gawmelee: ), R.O.B in Brawl ( :rob: ), and Wii Fit Trainer in Smash 4 ( :4wiifit: ). I feel like Bowser Junior would be the closest to a "what" character as well.

Duck Hunt was chosen to be one.

Bowser Jr. isn't even close to being considered a surprise character.

...how the heck is Bowser Jr. a "what" character? If anything I'd argue :rosalina: fits that mold better.

I don't really consider any character "what" characters, some are surprises but most make sense.

R.O.B. Game & Watch and Duck Hunt are legacy retro characters. They each represent an important piece of old school hardware.

I do wonder who next to fit this bill could be

I think Fighting Clown fits better for WFT.

EDIT: To further prove my point, she's one of the examples in that page. :p

If Smash 5 continues the new trend of making Assist Trophy/Pokeball characters playable, who do you think has the greatest chance of getting on the roster? There's dozens of options to choose from, but only a handful of them actually make sense.

Takamaru could work as a retro addition.

Alternatively, if Sakurai's mech project is a Custom Robo revival and it's released before the roster of a Smash 5 is decided, Ray is definitely going to be in.

-> Assuming Sakurai will come back for the next Smash.
Well, that project would be recent and relevant, so it would have some chances of getting some representation if released on time for it to be considered, regardless of whether Sakurai is working on the next Smash or not.

Will Smash be announced this year? Ehhh... Hard to say. I'm just gonna say it's a 50/50 chance because I don't know if Smash 4 will be ported. If it's not a port and the next Smash is similar to Splatoon 2 (data gets carried over and updated), my money is on a 2019 reveal.

Here's the old results.
Don't forget to reset the votes. If you don't, old votes stay up, which ****s up the poll results.

Wouldn't actually mind Funky Kong now. Still prefer Dixie (and think that everyone here should buy TF Switch if they missed out on the Wii U version) but I wouldn't be opposed to the surfer bro.

So Tropical Freeze is confirmed for the Switch then? Is that the oldest Wii U game confirmed for it? I know Sm4sh was still in development when that game came out since Diddy was confirmed to be in the game when Tropical Freeze released somewhere. Pretty neat if that's the case since it means it isn't just the most recent Wii U games that are coming over.

Wonderful 101 was teased at the same time as Bayonetta last year.
We've got a Bayonetta 1+2 port confirmed so I'm expecting W101 to come at some point.

This makes me think, @Diddy Kong must have no longer reason to get the Switch now with TF getting a port.

...Funky Kong for Smash?
Normally I would have overlooked the presence of a new port to the Switch since well, Star Fox 64 3D didn't help Wolf come back. But Funky Kong being a playable character is notable since this is a new role for him and I think the last time he was playable was on the Wii.

This is good news all around. It shows that Nintendo is invested in DK's future (because I guarantee you this will sell millions of copies) and it boosts the chance of a third DK character even if Sakurai never considers Dixie again. If we can't get K. Rool, I'm all for either Funky or Cranky joining the roster.

It's also the only first-party announcement that was any good. The third-party support are the highlights as it shows what kind of games we're getting and shows that at least Japanese third-party and indies are committed to the Switch.

But seriously Nintendo, a stealth direct? You could have at least given us a warning so that my friend wouldn't spoil the whole Direct.

I don't know. I can see the announcing it this year while they relase it next year. I don't think thay they will reveal and a release a Smash game in a single year.
