Official Smash Ultimate Discussion

Almost one month has passed since release. In retrospect....

  • This is by far the best Smash ever. Like, I don't even know how they will top this.

  • Pretty freakin' good; I have a few qualms over things like internet play, balancing issues, etc.

  • It's ok, but [insert Smash game here] is better.

  • I'd rather play Parcheesi.

Seriously, I'd be pissed. Why? As a Heihachi fan, I'd be very pissed if the "Young" version were chosen over the iconic old man version! The old Heihachi IS Heihachi. Young Heihachi is bad Heihachi.
I'm not even a Tekken fan and I'd be pissed. Old Man Heihachi or bust.

Fellas, who's a character that if they were announced as a newcomer, you would absolutely lose your mind over while everyone else would be more neutral and calm about? For me it'd definitely be Toad/Captain Toad. I've been waiting 10 years for this to happen pls Sakurai :(
Hmm ... I believe it would be Crash Bandicoot for me.
I've wanted the Sonic vs Mario vs Crash for Smash a long time now.

Well to be fair, the reboot did quite well and still has a niche following to this day.
Far better than what happened to something like MvCI or whichever NRS game isn't currently in vogue.
While true, Fulgore doesn't have that much demand when it comes to Rareware characters. Only one (a duo) gets any major support.

Regardless, I'd love him and Brian to be in Smash~

Interesting detail from the IGN interview is that Bill said "60+" costumes for Kirby...
More PR Talk.

This is obvious considering there are already 60 plus revealed.

If he had said a higher number. It gives people a ballpark range of additional content.

Well, that's it now for the one third party a week pattern. We have the Friday update and no Pac-Man. Everytime we think we have some sort of pattern pegged down, Sakurai plays us all for fools.
Side note, I do find it rather interesting that they wouldn't save the new Mario Kart update through a Direct. I believe there's a small handful of leaks that have about 24 hours to live at this point. Should be an interesting few days.
Yeah if there's a direct on the 22nd, it will likely be announced tomorrow or Saturday. Unless it's another stealth dropped mini direct like the one back in January. I'm very interested to see how this all plays out.

Also, DaybreakHorizon DaybreakHorizon if possible can you give us a list of the July 22nd direct leak and all it's related leaks that are likely just piggybacking off of it so we know what we could be in for?

I get where you're coming from, but I haven't seen anything groundbreaking on either side yet. There's arguments for why she won't be, but none of these arguments (to me) have solidified enough to give an 100% answer - When I speculate, I'm first looking at "Is it possible from a technical standpoint". Dixie does have enough of a model for her to completely use Diddy's, if they were to go that route, but someone here mentioned Dixie using her hair for attacks instead. That was pretty compelling to me.

But, if we reverse engineer this discussion, we might have more answers: Let's say Dixie's a full semi-clone. What moves would she borrow? How would they be altered? I think once we see answers to these (without people trying to make every single move of hers unique for the sake of it), echo or not, we'll have 1. An idea of how Dixie's moveset will look in the grand scheme of things (assuming she's even in the game) 2. Less of a discussion that repeats itself.
Galaxy brain: Dixie as a semi-clone of Donkey Kong

That said, in general, I'd agree that "Could this character be more than just an echo fighter" isn't enough of an argument against a character being an echo fighter, simply because that applies to pretty much any potential echo fighter, including the three that have already been revealed. I think a a more important question to ask is "would this character work as an echo fighter?"

Going with the Dixie Kong example, the main deal breaker that would prevent her from being a clone of Diddy isn't whether she has more potential with stuff she has in the DKC games. It's whether Diddy has moves that wouldn't make sense for Dixie to have.

You could point to Ganondorf as a counterpoint, but even then, I think that's more due to early installment weirdness - I think Sakurai and his team were more willing to sacrifice accuracy to the source material back then than they are now - and even then, there are characters like Wario that weren't implemented until later games because they felt that there weren't any other characters that they could suitably be cloned from.

A good 200 pages back or so, someone asked about favourite palettes for the characters people use. Figured I'd throw out mine even though it's way off topic.
:4falco: Mostly blue but also white and sometimes orange or purple. I love the teal outline on the boots of the blue outfit and the red boots of the white outfit.
:4ganondorf: Blue honestly just because it means if I run into another Ganon, I don't get stuck with that darker tint. His outfits all look the same anyways.
:4mewtwo:Nowadays I just stick with grape but I used to use minty and butter as well.
:4feroy:Mostly pink oddly enough but I like all of his outfits save for his gold one.
:4metaknight: Galacta Knight <3
:4rob:Bumblebee only. Used to use Virtual Boy and icy
:4robinm: Default male and white mage. Used to use the 4 females.
:4darkpit:Mostly default and red. Used to use green and purple too.
:4charizard:Ridley skin
:4myfriends:Mostly Black Knight but I sometimes go red, yellow, blue or Chrom
:4tlink:The darker of his outfits with the green tunic and brown sleeves.
:wolf: Dabbled in all of his outfits except for his pink outfit back in Brawl but eventually settled on just his default.

Current discussion seems to be the most hyped of the cut vets that came back? For me it's :ultwolf:>:ultyounglink::ultpichu:>:ultpokemontrainer::ultsnake::ulticeclimbers:

Man I really want a Nintendo Direct soon. Or a mini-Direct.

I know I'm being ungrateful as E3 was only like 5 weeks ago but still...

I'm expecting one mid-August to prepare us for Nintendo Online.

Are Kirby hats considered costumes, aren't they part of gameplay? If they count then this means nothing since we already know that Kirby has a hat for every character that they inhale. This piece of information is one of the most "nothing" scraps we've gotten.

Isabelle will be the new "post-Master/Crazy Hand" boss fight. Turns out, she's the one who made Master Core, and is also mass producing them.

It's easy cause she can just turn them into leaves and put them in her pocket.
I’ve always had this headcanon that Isabelle is basically Asst Mayor Bellweather from Zootopia, so I wouldn’t be surprised in the slightest.
Because that one's just a costume and not a real character.
Granted, had BotW Zelda been in, she would probably have a unique guardian focused weapon.

My thoughts on the real reason is Zelda's animations kinda assume she's wearing a long flowing dress and they didn't want to reanimate her so they just used the ALttP design.
I’m sure that’s the exact reason. It did give an excuse to have OoT Dorf and BotW Link, but I really would have loved Zelda’s royal gown from BotW. Pity it was so underused in game; it was absolutely gorgeous.
So, which Cut Character are y'all most excited for? Young Link for me.
:squirtle:
I couldn’t sleep the night after E3 since I was so excited to be getting my boi back.
Fellas, who's a character that if they were announced as a newcomer, you would absolutely lose your mind over while everyone else would be more neutral and calm about? For me it'd definitely be Toad/Captain Toad. I've been waiting 10 years for this to happen pls Sakurai :(
...I think I’ve been around enough that everyone else can answer that for me :p

I often get the feeling I’m the only Dragonborn supporter around here sometimes. If they announced him, I feel most people would be “oh cool!” while I’d be absolutely flipping my ****.
Side note: now recruiting new Dovahkiin supporters at the official thread!

So discussing cut characters eh? From most wanted to least wanted:

:ultwolf: - one of my mains from Brawl. I went nuts including when a couple of friends messaged me as well

:ultpichu: - I wanted him back for Wii U/3DS as a joke character and now he's returning. Even more fun since I mained Pichu in Melee lmao

:ulticeclimbers: - Wanted them back for Wii U/3DS and that was disappointing. So I'm happy they returned and got quite a pop

:ultsnake: - I like dat ass, but was pretty surprised he returned. Figured he was gonna get cut again because of the issue with Konami

:ultyounglink: - Legitimately surprised they bought him back. My only complaint is that there's 3 Links now. Other than that, it's nice to see OoT/MM getting some reps in a way

:ultpokemontrainer: - Personally, I wasn't a fan of the whole swapping Pokemon thing and always felt Charizard felt better as a solo fighter instead of a trip. Once I saw Pokemon Trainer return for Ultimate with Squirtle and Ivysaur, I wasn't that thrilled, just "oh...okay" and then got disappointed with Charizard going back to the trio

He has literally no chance but I would love to see Zegram Ghart from Rogue Galaxy. I don't think enough people know the game to really care but he's one if my favorite game characters ever.
Aaaah I love Rogue Galaxy! <3

It's hilariously bad, but the GFAQs 'leaker' posted another picture. This time of Heihachi

Lmaooooo they’re using the Tekken series logo as his Smash logo? They’re not even trying

The “model”’s lighting is way off too

A Smash Ultimate interview with Bill Trinen came up on a IGN live-stream apparently, and there are some bits of new info:

https://twitter.com/TannerLPer/status/1020122919916015617

- Sakurai paying attention to Invitational footage for balancing
- Still wants entry point for newcomers, but won't forget competitive crowd at all
- Sakurai taking "every last minute" for development, balancing - "60+ characters" in the game
- Kirby has "60+ variants" for copy forms, doubling down on the 60+ comment
- sly answer to "demo?" question, sounds like it will certainly happen
- Biggest E3 reaction was to Ridley, who is biggest in North America. Says that Japan calls him "Captain America"
- North America has way more Melee fans who want those characters balanced.
- He said "Xenoblade Characters"
-Confirms David Hayter's return. David's response was "being excited to be back"
- Treehouse play every day at lunch, after work for hours. Aww.
- DLC later? "Big part of the Wii U game but let's focus on the game being done. Decisions later." Ultimate edition may not have anything else Sakurai wants in.

The XC part is interesting to say the least, but there is no context about it.

Probably Heihachi or Jin, since I don't think there's a ton of crossover between the typical Nintendo audience and the typical Tekken audience, given only 3 or so Tekken titles got released on Nintendo systems.

Most of the other new characters I'd want (Isaac/Spring-Man/Icineroar/Buzzwole) I think there's plenty of people who'd want them in, particularly around here.

Ridley being called Captain America is amazing, makes me want nee fan art of him with Samus as Iron Woman.

I'd tag Captain America on this if I wasn't on Mobile and hating my phone.

EDIT: To the Xenoblade Characters comment...was this a live interview? Because it could have been a translation error from his translator, even just accidently adding an s and making it plural.

Even Sakurai seems to know how significant Dixie's ponytail is to her, if the trophy descriptions for her are anything to go off of.

Melee: she's even able to twirl her ponytail in order to float slowly through the air.

Brawl: That ponytail is hardly for show—it helps propel her through the air for extended hang time and is indispensable for spin-attacking enemies and lifting barrels.

3DS/Wii U: Her ponytail isn't just for show—she can use it to swim faster, soar in the sky, and even lift barrels! With hair that does all that, you can bet she takes good care of it!

They make special note of her ponytail, and what she can do with it in every one of her trophy descriptions. Not having her use it just seems very unlikely.

This doesn't do anything for that rumour since the DLC we've got is nothing like what they were suggesting. The idea of a Direct on Sunday is still ridiculous in my opinion though, so I never really believed it.

Most of my wants are fairly popular picks, but I guess Jeanne from Bayonetta, I ****ing love her and people don't acknowledge her enough, I would scream.

Although if you're saying captain toad then elma and impa would count as well but they're decently popular in their respective franchises so I wouldn't really count them

Again.

The emphasis on 60+ plus is PR safe talk.

It's only keeping it to the amount of people we already have revealed. Nothing more.

They're not gonna say ''70 plus" for instance until 70 plus are revealed.

Glad Sakurai is paying attention to Invitational footage for balancing, and it makes sense. Hopefully Cloud and Bayonetta will continue to receive nerfs.

Specifically mentioning 60+ makes me think we may end up with under 70 characters at launch. At the same time, could mean nothing, as 60+ doesn't necessarily deconfirm 70+.

NA has more Melee fans who want those characters balanced. Does that mean he's going to try and make popular characters from Melee more like how they were back then? I'd kill to see Fox and Falco top tier again.

And 'Xenoblade Characters' could be a slip of the tongue, but I'd be pretty damn surprised if we didn't get one.

Lastly, I wouldn't be surprised if this game had no DLC. From Smash 4's development in 2012 to now, that's six years of developing Smash. Assuming a DLC set would last two years like in Smash 4, that'd be around eight years of nothing but Smash Bros. Sakurai could very well just want out by the time Ultimate releases.

He was talking about what characters newcomers to the franchise will gravitate towards for Smash Bros Ultimate and he said "Characters like Cloud, like Bayonetta, like uh, uh, the Xenoblade characters"

Considering that, and that we got Ridley and Daisy, I think that means fan service.

I mean, it's only two characters when written in Japanese.

That said, I mostly agree since either the Mishima Zaibatsu logo or Jin's Tattoo/techincally a burnmark(well if Jin specifically was chosen, as he's the most consistent lead)would work in it's place.

The Captain America this IS true then...

Some of this is stuff we knew, like the invitational stuff, or obvious, like the DLC stuff. But some neat info in spite of that.

The number is ambiguous. Saying Kirby has 60+ costumes (if we are assuming those costumes are hats) is like saying there are 60+ characters in the game. It's redundant, we already know that, it's "nothing".

Side note that only me and 3 other people might care about. But I find it kind of cool that Mega Man's Gear logo now works much better for him since Mega Man 11 has the Double Gear system, rather than it being some standard robot thing.

Wouldn't really be upset if we got sub-70. Can you imagine playing Smash 64 back in the day and someone going "Dude, one day there's going to be 70 different characters to play as!" It would've blown my mind. Besides, balancing for the number we have already is going to be insane.

I was wrong on the name earlier, but he's dead, Jim.

I just noticed something. Unlockable characters are almost never revealed before the Japanese release of the game. The exceptions were for :ultsnake: and :ultsonic: for Brawl to promote the 3rd parties I take it and :ultlucina: for Smash 4 to lead in to Robin (Dark Pit wasn't "officially" announced in Palutena's trailer, his status was unconfirmed at the time. Same with :ultganondorf: and :ultjigglypuff: in Melee). But now EVERY character is shown off regardless of starter status or not. But will we still see "secret" characters that aren't revealed beforehand similar to previous games?
I believe so. Never show your full hand when you have aces in the hole.

Fellas, who's a character that if they were announced as a newcomer, you would absolutely lose your mind over while everyone else would be more neutral and calm about? For me it'd definitely be Toad/Captain Toad. I've been waiting 10 years for this to happen pls Sakurai :(
Shantae or Rayman, absolutely.

For less possible dreams, there's Captain Syrup, Plum and the DK Crew stragglers (Tiny, Lanky, Chunky).

Still, I'm honestly worried about no DLC. While Sakurai does need a long rest after everything is done, is there any guarantee the roster will leave most people content until the next console generation?

Could we end up getting both Elma and the Rex/Pyra/Mythra combo?

Ridley is the next Captain America for the MCU confirmed
Way I see it, it’d be Elma, Rex & Pyra, and Addam & Mythra (R&P semi-echo, taking the Torna DLC into consideration)

and if a miracle happens, Fiora...the more I think about it the more I find it suspicious that for a Final Smash cameo, her model is practically the same quality detail-wise...wishful thinking on my part I know...
