Official Smash Ultimate Discussion

Almost one month has passed since release. In retrospect....

  • This is by far the best Smash ever. Like, I don't even know how they will top this.

  • Pretty freakin' good; I have a few qualms over things like internet play, balancing issues, etc.

  • It's ok, but [insert Smash game here] is better.

  • I'd rather play Parcheesi.

I have a feeling we're having one of those "my character is perfect, every other character will be a disappointment" thing going on.

Does it matter if a series gets another rep? If the character plays well, I don't care about a franchise getting more characters. Since when does there have to be some limit?
Yeah, people need to stop acting like any character will be as hype as Wonder-Red

King. K Rool obviously.

I mean I don't think he's a shoe in or anything but I still see him as a likely inclusion in Smash Bros.

King Hippo from Punch Out, probably.
He actually sounds like one of the easier ones to pull off. Even if it's mostly due to a cartoon that wasn't that popular, it made King Hippo one of the most popular boxers outside of Little Mac himself. He definitely is notable. There's others, of course, like Glass Joe, Mr. Dream(since obviously Mike Tyson would not appear... beyond a trophy if they don't mind licensing him, but considering his image is associated with unnecessary violence, it's not hard to see why they created an OC Stand-in for him early on in the Punch Out series), Bald Bull, and um... yeah, those are the only ones I can honestly think of off the top of my head.

I doubt Punch Out's ever going to get a second rep IMO.

So....

I'm curious...

What would your reactions be if we got a Smash Bros 4 Port with extra content but part of that content is...

Newcomer: Crash Bandicoot
+ Stage: Wumpa Island Tour Stage (and all music that would come with it)
+ Dr. Neo Cortext Assist Trophy
+Aku Aku Mask Item
+Various Crash Bandicoot Trophies
Day 1 buy, new main, nostalgia moments, etc.

The best part? Crash vs Sonic vs Mario from the 90's? HECK YES!

I'll go with Scizor who'd be out there for being Gen 2 but possible because he's sorta popular and in Pokken.
I'm iffy on Scizor but after thinking about it, Scizor would work pretty well. Plus a Bug/Steel brings some diversity to the play

I currently can't see any Mario newcomer right now.
At this point, Geno and Toad/Captain Toad are the only logical choices unless they make something new like they did with Rosalina

New discussion: plausible heavy weight newcomers?
King K Rool, King Hippo, Scizor?, Takamaru?

Didn't see these guys mentioned yet but I think Doc Louis, Dark Matter and Dr. Eggman are all at least semi-realistic choices that'd probably end up being heavy-weights if they get in.

I mentioned Doc Louis in a discussion you probably missed. He's my choice for a 2nd Punch Out rep.

On the topic of Pauline.

Characters have switched between what franchise they are bundled in over time. Baby Mario trophy was a Yoshi trophy in Melee and Brawl and a Mario character in Smash 3DS.

I reckon Pauline is going to start appearing in Mario games and we'll likely be categorized as one.

So yeah thanks for reminding me again that K.Rool is the only logical choice. The only other potential newcomer would probably be Ganon. Takamaru is not gonna be a heavy weight.

And Punch Out is indeed probably not going to get a newcomer.

Am thinking we could get lucky and get a heavy weight Fire Emblem or Pokemon newcomer that's still in the work. Longgggg stretch. But it's the only REAL possibility.

Or we get something old skool as Hector and Blastoise. Which won't happen probably ever. Same with Scizor.

Maybe just maybe the ARMS fighter will be heavier than Mario.

Armor Lord for FE Switch pls
They are pretty long overdue but it's probably gonna be a Sword-locked prettyboy Lord again.

That's why am actuallt pretty damn willing to have Alm in. With Alm, I know exactly what to expect. This new Lord / main character will probably be something I don't like anyway.

Since Fire Emblem.

A stork?

how would that even be introduced in a reveal trailer without everyone in the world laughing?
Better than a Tetris block being revealed.

Would Mallo from Pushmo be a heavyweight? He is a sumo, but tiny.

Maybe a similar weight to Wario, rather than being a super heavyweight.

So, now every series needs to have a limit?
This is a lazy form of hyperbole. Just because a series can get another character doesn’t inherently mean it should, that’s quite an obvious fallacy.

It's not absurd to want the roster to roughly correspond to series notoriety and ubiquity. That doesn't mean there needs to be a hard limit, and some series obviously have more plausible candidates at their disposal than others (that Yoshi conversation proves as much), but it does mean there comes a point in a series where after a certain number of characters, devs and fans opt to see representation elsewhere. It's not just a FE thing.

Sakurai himself has, on multiple occasions, touched on the issue of possible oversaturation.

Interesting that you mentioned Mallo that way. I never thought he was a heavyweight the whole time

A mounted Mach Rider or Mach Rider or Mach Rider w/ the ability to transform into a motorcycle could be a heavyweight.

There are indeed a lot of possible playable chsracters for Fire Emblem. Lot of characters would make for feasable newcomers, especially at this moment.

If we'd take the general consensus, most people rather want less than more. Roster cuts are in most people's cases heavily involved in the Fire Emblem cast. I think that's rather unfair.

Corrin got lucky to get in, Robin was perfectly timed and wouldn't probably make the roster otherwise, Roy was heavily demanded to return and was popular, Lucina was a very easy addition. Marth and Ike are the most important lords, and faces of Fire Emblem in general. I think all characters bare either one Avatar character makes for a great representation. Both could stay, but am thinking that the next main character could potentially be a Avatar character yet again.

And if we get a new Avatar next Fire Emblem, there's the choice to add him to Smash, and maybe the removal of another Avatar character becomes more likely. That's what am thinking at least. Maybe this character will use tomes and axes for example. Doesn't Robin then become sort of redundant? Then again, the whole Awakening thing. Warriors also had the theme going on strongly... I doubt it's gonna be off the radar anytime soon.

However am thinking the cast of Fire Emblem characters we have now is very strong as well. Fire Emblem amiibo had some of the most utility. Means the core cast reappears in some form quite a lot since their Smash 4 appearance. That's why this whole situation is tricky.

NOW HERE COMES ANOTHER NEW CONSPIRACY! What about the amiibo line anyway? Took them a damn long time to get all of them made. With amiibo being compatible still on the Switch, I doubt these Smash amiibo are gonna be useless the next Smash game. And that's why I have a hard time thinking they won't port / recycle / reuse for at least 75% of the content for this next game. No character cuts, minimal newcomers, but strong DLC support. It seems very easy sales wise.

You know, after all these discussions about various series, do Fire Emblem need a 7th rep for the fifth Smash? The six we have seems perfectly fine minus some tweaks we can do. Ike and Lucina can always add an Axe/Spear move to their move pool while Lucina can fade away from the clone of Marth and become a more Luigified character like what Roy has done.

I've said it before and I say it again, to me the only way most people would welcome a new Fire Emblem rep is if the next protagonist use another weapon rather than a sword, like a lance or an axe.

Otherwise let's keep the FE cast as it is, no more and no less.

It's not up to us; we're gonna get at least one FE cut and at least one FE newcomer for Smash 5, so, looking ahead, it'll be fruitless being complacent with the current lineup.

Why don't we use a a character from that Tokyo Mirage Sessions game?
People are already cautious when it comes to adding more Fire Emblem characters in general. Adding in such radically and thematically different characters from a spinoff that put off a good portion of the FE fanbase (and to top it off, didn't sell well) likely isn't even something they'd think about.

The year is 9099. The world is close to ending. The last known document of the human race: an argument over FE reps.
It's not just FE reps, there's Wii Fit Trainer and Dark Pit as well. I just want more characters who people actually care about and not ones who are just used for advertisements.

Wii Fit Trainer
The year is 2017. The human race is still complaining that Wii Fit, one of Nintendo's best selling franchises, got a playable character against all odds, despite being a completely unique character.

1. People care about Wii Fit Trainer and Dark Pit
2. Neither of those are used for advertisements at all, especially WFT
3. Dark Pit was still a free character

the year is 2017 and casual fans are still accepting everything Sakurai gives them regardless if they really are unique or not.

Also to Zebei, Maybe so but they were still pretty recent and were only in one game. They should've came later over characters like K. Rool, Dixie and Ridley but instead were made a costume, stage hazard, and only a trophy.

Nah, believe me, I wasn't keen on WFT at first either, but she grew on me. I was also very salty when the final DLC was revealed because it wasn't the character I wanted, and I'm still not the biggest fan of Corrin (actually playing his source game helped that).
So what were you saying about me accepting everything Sakurai gives?
