Official Smash Ultimate Discussion

Almost one month has passed since release. In retrospect....

  • This is by far the best Smash ever. Like, I don't even know how they will top this.

  • Pretty freakin' good; I have a few qualms over things like internet play, balancing issues, etc.

  • It's ok, but [insert Smash game here] is better.

  • I'd rather play Parcheesi.

No I mean if I order a physical copy online, it will probably take at least a month for it to get here from Japan.
Is there a specific reason you're getting the JP version? You could easily change the language stuff in every other version of the game. :dizzy:

Have you seen true agony?
I mean, it has an analog stick and shoulder buttons, right, unlike the sideways Wii Remote? The shoulder buttons are less awkward if you attach the wrist strap, but... well, it still is kinda tiny, but yeah... I wonder where the taunt input on that will be? (Hopefully it’s not tied to clicking the analog stick in like a button, it’ll be so easy to press that by accident...)

Here's a really big question for everyone:
Are you going to buy Smash Ultimate Physically or Digitally?

I'm going to buy it physically, because 1. i dont have bank-powered plastic cards and i don't want to get an e-shop card and 2. i want to complete my physical collection of the smash games. The only one I actually don't have is 4 Wii U, but since I have 4 3DS I'm gonna count it for all of 4 anyway. :p
In general, I inconsistently buy physically or digitally depending on convenience.
I’ll likely get the physical version for this though just because I’ll likely be getting it for Christmas.

I'm going with the JP version because I want the Japanese voices and text. As far as I know, NTSC versions of Nintendo games have no Japanese options whatsoever.

I don't know. Probably physical because that's how I've bought most of my Switch games. Digital also has it's perks though. We'll see come December.

They used to, Brawl had it and whatnot. Since Region locking's out of the game, we can only assume it's a possibility it was brought back. I don't know if games are affected by your Switch's own language settings, though.

New music on the Smash Bros website, and it is from Snipperclips.
Wonder what other kind of content we'll get from that game. Perhaps an assist trophy? I guess anything else would be too much.

I hope we get the Gritzy Desert remix back from Brawl. I never realized how much I would miss it until it was gone.

Physical Cartridge hands down. Most of the games I have are physical, and I've typically grown up with physical mediums with the N64 era onwards. True, downloadable games have benefits of not needing to blow dust off a cartridge to get it to work, and you can download/delete them to manage space if needs be, but I just prefer a physical copy.

I've always bought physical, but for the Switch, I'm definitely going to go for Digital.

Carrying a case of games around is a risky hassle that's generally not worth the headache of switching out if I want to play something else.

If Switch were a home-only console, I'd buy it physical purely to stare at that boxart on my shelf knowing that all my games are safely stored in my home, but seeing as I take my Switch out and about, the benefit of always having Smash ready to fire up, not needing a physical cartridge to operate, and never being able to be lost definitely outweighs that purdy box.

I buy physical whenever possible. I just like having a copy in my hands, and it's nice to see the boxes all lined up. It also saves on having to buy a bunch of extra storage drives in the long run.

And this time in particular, it comes with the added bonus of getting to go to prerelease events and shill encourage the people there to check out my channel. And if a couple things go the way I think they might, I may have quite the reputation by then...

I've actually combed through all the pics and videos on the website. Luigi and Yoshi actually show up as victims the most of any character not in the E3 build...

They happen to be my two favorite characters. Thanks Nintendo

To be perfectly honest, this is a fighting game.

I have a question.
Out of all the stages that haven't been confirmed yet, which one would you all consider to be "the worst"?
Edit: I'm asking this because I haven't played every Smash game, and I want to know that.

Sukapon has been the only disconfirmation that I've been sad about. He would have been a great retro character, seeing as he represents one of Nintendo's first fighting games. Glad to see him in a semi-sizeable role though!

I went ahead and changed my sig.

It's now a chronological list of all confirmed character's original debut.

When they confirm more characters, I'll add them to their proper place.

Thinking about adding a bonus list of wants underneath, but I don't think we have all the icons of characters I want.

Makes me wonder how all star mode will be this time.

I have a question. Do you consider that Roy originate from Melee or Binding Blade?

It wouldn't make sense to give to you as a default mode since you're starting out with either the original 8 or 12 (I wish Sakurai got really specific on the 64 roster comment). It should be only unlocked once you unlock everyone.

Binding Blade.

Smash Bros counts that as his debut and so do I.

After all, Binding Blade was meant to be out before Melee.

I'm more interesed on how streamlining the unlockables will turn out to be. The leak about buying characters with coins sounds like a copout and not fun at all. I always liked the niche unlock requirements, but only the good ones (reflect items 5 times for brawl ness). Just don't make me play 20 hours of a game for Mewtwo.

I'll find it hilarious that characters like Corrin and Bayonetta will be the first fighters in All-Star mode and therefore the weakest ones...
Not as funny as Ridley being weaker than them.

Hot take but I'm considering both.

As a rule I always buy physical because I always like having a hard copy and don't intend on changing that. However, the convenience argument of digital is speaking to me with Smash and if I were to have one game always available, it would be this.

Orbital Gate Assault is the worst stage in my book. If you're talking about older games, Hannebow and Mario Bros. comes to mind. Someone could argue the scrolling stages like Rumble Falls/Icicle Mountain are worse, but I don't mind them as much personally. Same with Brinstar Deaths and Poke Floats; I like them but they're not without their flaws. That being said, I'd love to see how all these stages look in Omega/BF forms.

I prefer getting physical copies nowadays because having a physical collection just feels so much better than a digital library.
Smash is no exception.

Personally, I'd love it if the unlock methods were similar to that of Melee, which means that we need some damn good modes. If we don't get Subspace Emissary 2, we at least need a Melee-styled adventure mode, and a classic mode that's not styled after Kid Icarus Uprising (I know Sakurai made that game, but I have to say, having the exact same style in Smash as in Uprising just felt weird).

Smash 4 had literally no other good modes aside from All-Star. If the unlocks in this game aren't uniquely associated with quality, Melee-level modes, they won't be fun, because that's another thing I hated about Smash 4: the lack of mode-exclusive unlocks. Blazing through a fast and horrible Classic mode in a day to get everyone wasn't enjoyable. Unlocks need to feel rewarding, and while I know the Smash competitive community haaaaates unlocks, it takes away from a character's value if they're easily unlockable or nearly all available right away.

Nice! The Japanese blog posted a "Today's memory" for it as well, much like with Bomberman and some of the fighters:

There was a problem fetching the tweet

Strange to see that Daisy came before Marth and Yoshi and that Corrin is STILL the newest fighter.

I really want the Miis to fight along in All-Star Mode. Maybe the standard Miis? Or Miis you have created in Smash Bros yourself?

That's what happens when a character gets put in the backburner for 11 years...
True but I think it's mostly from me reeeeaaaaallly underestimating just how old and how long the original Gameboy went on for.

9 whole years before the Gameboy Color was released.

Digitally for the Day 1 release, but chances are I'll end up buying it physically down the line for that sweet box art. I normally buy everything physically but I'm in a position where purchasing a physical copy of a game will take days for it to arrive as I have to ship it to my location, and I'd rather just get the game digitally for Day 1 play.
