Official Smash Ultimate Discussion

Almost one month has passed since release. In retrospect....

  • This is by far the best Smash ever. Like, I don't even know how they will top this.

  • Pretty freakin' good; I have a few qualms over things like internet play, balancing issues, etc.

  • It's ok, but [insert Smash game here] is better.

  • I'd rather play Parcheesi.

Not sure about characters with a new design getting an amiibo, but the returning veterans are definitely getting something new. There's no way you'd be able to train any of them unless you had an amiibo specifically for that character.

At minimum, we're getting an amiibo card of Snake, Pichu, Ice Climbers, Young Link, Wolf, and Pokemon Trainer.

Not to bother anyone, but am I the only one who can't see signatures or use fighter icons?

I'm just happy Ridley's render means his Amiibo won't need any support beams, those are an instant deal-breaker for me (although I might have made the exception just for Ridley regardless).

I remember when I intended to buy every Smash amiibo, lol.
I don't think I'll even be buying one amiibo this time...
I'll buy a select few probably, depending on who gets announced, but I gave up on collecting all of them a long time ago.

I think I ended with Pikachu, Mewtwo, Pacman, and Diddy, and I was just like "Yeah, I think I spent enough on these...."

EDIT: Just realized I HAVE to get a Pichu amiibo. CURSE YOU SAKURAIII!

Clear your browsers cache.

Try clearing your cache, worked for me as well as others

Edit: :ultgreninja:'d

So to make this post not useless...anyone realize that Smash Ultimate is being released both on the Japanese Smash Wii U release date and Iwata's birthday? I thought that was interesting

Technically Young Link has an amiibo already from the 30th anni Zelda line but he's need a Smash one too. Wonder if Squirtle and Ivysaur would get them too.

I had a few more, I believe. I remember when I was on vacation with my family and bought just about every single amiibo I saw, just because I was filthy rich at the time.
Then I took a break from Smash, and by the time I got back into it I just stopped caring.

A neat little fun fact I learned: In Germany, due to the rating on the box being bigger than most other places, the box art for Smash Ultimate had to be changed a bit.

Pikachu was moved up, Yoshi was removed entirely, and the logo isn't centered.

Huh, I guess Germany takes tax fraud pretty seriously.

About amiibo, I remember when those first came out I only intended on getting the characters I played as the most... Next thing I knew I ended up with 28 amiibo. (And I still have a handful that I want, like King Dedede, the Squid Sisters, Ridley... And probably Pichu, Wolf and Ice Climbers if those guys get amiibo.)

There was a problem fetching the tweet

So since it's (presumably) confirmed not every stages will return, which stages can we assume won't get in?

For start:
Miiverse - Was basically Battlefield with Miiverse drawings occasionnaly appearing in the background, and the service has been shut down last year.

Sector Z - No need to have a second Corneria.

Mushroom Kingdom 64 - I don't see Sakurai making 2 different pipe animations for more than 60 characters.

Flat Zone (Melee) and Flat Zone 2 - We now have Flat Zone X which is a combination of both.

I still haven't bought a single Amiibo.

I intended to get Sonic, Marth, Pikachu, Lucario, Dr. Mario and Toon Link at the very least (before the DLC characters were revealed), but other things took precedence and my plan never took fruition.

Don't know if the two upwards autoscrollers will return honestly. Icicle Mountain and Rumble Falls right? Yeah, not too sure about those two, though I would still love to have then both.

Although I think there's a decent chance we won't see Sector Z return, I wouldn't count it out for being a "second Corneria".

There's enough differences between the two to warrant/justify them both. Sector Z was much larger than Corneria, and has potential as a 8-Player Smash stage. Visually, Corneria has been designed off Star Fox Zero, whereas Sector Z would likely retain it's Star Fox 64 design.

Reminder characters are shrunk down in 8-player Smash, thus we can suppose Corneria will get a Sector Z shape then.

This is a nice date.

Honestly this is one game that a one-month delay would not be too annoying - Smash 64’s 20th (for Japan) is January 2019

Excuse me, I though it was a fandom rule that Ridley could absolutely 100% never be shrunk down ever for any reason :joyful:

Personally, I think you'll likely be able to count the number of stages that don't come back with one hand (maybe two if you push it).

It will probably be the ones that no longer work (i.e. Miiverse) and ones that are obsoleted by other, later stages (Flat Zones 1 and 2 for Flat Zone X).

I wonder when we're going to get the next Smash direct. I wasn't around for Smash 4... did they do them often?
They had a smash direct and a 50 fact extravaganza for smash 4 (along with DLC directs).
The direct was is april with the launch in september, about 6 months.
The 50 fact extravaganze was in october with the launch in november (wiiU only), 1 month.

I wouldn't put much stock in newcomers getting revealed for Smash on important anniversaries for their home series.

We've never actually seen that happen for a newcomer before, yet people keep expecting it for some reason.

If you're going to look for patterns to make sense of things, make sure there's actual precedent for it, or you'll just end up disappointing yourself.
This is exactly what I was trying to say, but you said it better.

Honestly as much as I really dig the redesigns for some characters, Im hopeful its JUST the newcomers and returning vets that arent in smash4 that get amiibos.

I buy two of each smash amiibo and I just don't want to have to hunt for and buy too many going forward.

Chances are we'll get a showing in normal nitnendo Direct and one Direct dedicated to the other modes of Smash. Here's hoping the classic mode isn't nothing but 8 player matches again.

I also own every Smash Bros amiibo-- including the alts for Bayonetta / Cloud / Corrin... and the Japanese R.O.B. heh.

I also have basically every Mario/Zelda/AnimalCrossing/Splatoon amiibo and most of the ones with only one or two in their set. I have a problem.

One of the annoying things pre-E3 was being so unsure if we'd even get a direct before E3 (until they confirmed we wouldn't, don't wanna brag but I totally called not seeing any Smash news till E3).

But now I look forward to checking if a direct annoucnement is posted everyday (I know it's not likely this soon after E3, but as the days go on it only gets more and more likely we will have a direct announcement). The possibility excites me way more now!

...unless of course we do get a direct and it DOESN'T have a newcomer trailer. That...that would kill me lol.

We get a trailer... and Isaac's in it! But he's an Assist Trophy...
We get a trailer... and Ashley's in it! But she's an Assist Trophy...
We get a trailer... and K. Rool's in it! But he's an Assist Trophy...
We get a trailer... and... you get the idea.

I went back and looked at Sakurai's comments about Ultimate's early stages, and I realized that what we've inferred from his quotes was wrong. December 2015 is when he gave the first project proposal, not the first project plan. A project proposal is completely different from a project plan, and it doesn't signify that development was mapped out yet.

It's possible that the official planning didn't start until 2016, much like we had originally thought.

Still better than Isaac AT gone completely and K Rool just a normal trophy....

Some people have brought this up but we haven't really dived into what it means.

My first thought is has Sakurai ever used the term Project Proposal when speaking about the project plan? I wonder how closely tied and similar they would be.

Secondly...I feel like the proposal would be more than Smash on Switch. It would definitely include the theme and return of all veterans, he basically confirms that in the article. I wonder if it would include big character additions (Ridley) or possible place holder character additions (Pokemon, Xenoblade etc.).

Finally, he does talk about beginning development shortly after dlc...which probably means early 2016 which is still way earlier than some predicted (summer 2016-fall 2016) and thus is still a game changer for predictions.

But yea I feel people should talk about this more if we are going to cite it as "evidence" for speculation.

I thought the roster was finalised in December 2015 or whatever
A preliminary roster was likely formulated at that time, yes.
That, by no means, means that it was the final draft.
Of course, knowing Sakurai, the first and final drafts were probably very similar.
