Official Smash Ultimate Discussion

Almost one month has passed since release. In retrospect....

  • This is by far the best Smash ever. Like, I don't even know how they will top this.

  • Pretty freakin' good; I have a few qualms over things like internet play, balancing issues, etc.

  • It's ok, but [insert Smash game here] is better.

  • I'd rather play Parcheesi.

There's a sega rep I want.
Right.
Here.
<-------

Though I guess Atlus characters are really only Sega characters by technicality.
A persona rep would be so good! It's just a shame that Roslaina already got the whole puppet master shtick, but it could still work.

Well, as much as Pokemon being Nintendo characters. Atlus is a sub-company of sega I think

That seemed to be more fanservice compared to the rest of the anime. Doesn't even let his fist get on fire, what a bummer. I actually want to explain how much of a plothole inducing plot this anime had.

okay so Ryu Suzkau (or Rick Wheeler if you still think 4kids exist) was this cop in 2051. Was gonna engage to his girlfriend one night. Got in a car chase against this guy named Zoda. tl;dr he dies. then he doesn't, he was surgically fixed and cryogenically frozen. now he's 150 years into the future why? we don't know, not until like the last episode.

So after like 10 minutes of a mental breakdown because he just go woken up in the future by space police who want him to do space policing even though he just realized his girlfriends probably dead, he hijacks an f-zero machine and bolts the scene. After meeting a space police guy who's the chad stereotype who picks up ladies Ryu learns an important lesson: racecars before hoes. So then he starts racing. He's pretty good. He meets Captain Falcon. Turn out he's a bartender. Neat.

Turns out Zoda's alive. Now he's a big pink monster. They don't even explain how he went from human to jellybean, he just is. the future is awesome. Black Shadow's there too and he's doing villainy things by being the most OP villain in existence. Zoda tells Ryu he took his girl, and man he is pissed. So pissed he almost dies. Then Zoda flies off and does Zoda things, like being the best character in existence.

Falcon's back with war stories and mad PTSD. Turns out he faked his own death and was Jody Summer's brother who got "bombed by Zoda". How tragic. Black Shadow's back, and boy did he get a good dose of Falcon DNA, and then he uses it to make Blood Falcons. "Is 1,000 Blood Falcons fine?" Black Shadow asks his assistant who is totally not a brainwashed cryogenically frozen Ryu's girlfriend. Turns out she is a brainwashed cryogenically frozen Ryu's girlfriend, and man Ryu is pissed. So pissed he almost dies. Again.

Turns out Black Shadow wants to nuke the universe, aw hell yeah. He's gonna do it by building a big reactor that is powered by tiny reactors that are also engines of F-Zero machines, aw hell yeah. Turns out Ryu's F-Zero machine and Falcon's Blue Falcon are running on these reactors, how plot convenient. Black Shadow invades the city and brings Zoda along. While Ryu's still being pissed about his girlfriend being alive he and Falcon get SUCCED into a zone where Zoda is. Then like 100 Blood Falcons just try to ram them up, but Zoda literally inhales them into his stomach, pops a reactor that Black Shadow stuck in his body, and gets swole as ****. I'm not even joking, that actually happened. I'll even link it just to prove my point.

Now the reactor game is like the triforce piece sidequest in Wind Waker where its back and forth until Black Shadow wins because of course he does, the man can literally just wipe you out of living and was apparently the mastermind behind everything. Like, he made Zoda, sent him back in time to kill Ryu even though he knew he would live. It's stupid. But now Black Shadow has the things and the universe is closing in on its itself- nevermind Falcon ust blew himself up along with an entire galaxy. Ryu lives somehow, becomes Captain Falcon, and his girlfriend is now not brainwashed and now they can live happily ever after in the future.

That was a pretty rough explanation, but half of it was filler anyway. :p

I wouldn't expect a lot of customization for miis on online any-time soon, at least outside of lobbies. You know the Hitler miis that would come otherwise.
Miis were already playable in a bunch of different online multiplayer games on every Nintendo console from the Wii to the Switch (most recent one being MK8DX) with their faces visible, so I don’t see why that would be different for Smash Ultimate. Even Smash 4 had Miis’ faces visible in the lobbies, which isn’t very different from having them visible in gameplay (aside from maybe being easier to report, I’m still not entirely sure how that worked, but, regardless, the point stands with all of the other Mii games.)

Just put Aegis. Make Persona spells her specials(except maybe Orgia Moe) and then you still have a girl with machine guns in her fingers.

Knowing Hatsune Miku was property of Sega was like finding out Cooking Mama was owned by Square. It still doesn't make much sense.
Sega is so bizarre? Like with Nintendo most of their IPs are pretty similar in terms of aesthetic and tone, even the more darker one's like Zelda and Metroid, but then you look at Sega, who's mascot is a blue cartoon hedgehog, while their other IPs include Bayonetta, Kiryu and Miku. Not that I'm complaining. Bizarre is good.

So, since Jump Force is a huge crossover between Shonen Jump; how cool would that concept be if it played just exactly like Smash instead? Jump Super Stars/Jump Ultimate Stars were similar, but not quite right... Imagine the roster of Shonen Jump anime/manga fighters (with a healthy dose of My Hero :p ) playing like the anime fighters in Super Smash Flash 2.
God, that is the D R E A M. Smash bros is literally the only fighting game style I care for, I can't stand those one on one, face to face games like SF or arena style shown in Jump Force. A smash bros clone with Shonen characters would probably make me cry tears of joy :happysheep:

I mean there's stuff like Ristar, NiGHTS and Billy Hatcher that fits right in with Sonic's aesthetic, and they're all designed by Sonic creators to boot. Sonic, Ristar and NiGHTS were designed by Oshima, Billy Hatcher by Uekawa who designs the Post-Adventure characters.

I know, but those series are either A. Dead, B. Bad, or C.Dead and bad.

I'm talking about Sega's other big hitters, like Yakuza, Persona, and Bayonetta, which are probably superior to Sonic at the moment relatively speaking.

Although, I guess there is Puyo Puyo

B. and C. better be referring to Billy Hatcher...

Yeah, those other series' have that consistent quality while Sonic Team's still releasing stuff like Forces for Sonic.

Alright.

Your goal is to add new Nintendo IPs to Smash. These IPs will have playable representation.

However, the IPs must follow this pattern.

1 IP that debuted in the 1980s
1 IP that debuted in the 1990s
1 IP that debuted in the 2000s
3 IPs that debuted in the 2010s

Advertising still matters.

Prophecy said Ryu and Falcon were supposed to be the ones to kill Black Shadow. So Black Shadow had the idea to help Ryu by literally giving him the baby steps to get up to the final moments just so he could give him the disrespect. Now Black Shadow has the things and the universe is closing in on its itself- nevermind Falcon just blew himself up along with an entire galaxy. Ryu lives somehow, becomes Captain Falcon, and his girlfriend is now not brainwashed and now they can live happily ever after in the future.

Now if only Zelda could get an anime some time this century.

They just released Yakuza 6 this year and have already announced plans for Yakuza 7. A remake of Yakuza 2 is coming out in America in a month, but that's about it for remakes.

On that note, Kazuma Kiryu, the main protagonist of Yakuza, would be hella fun inn Smash.

For the sake of actually filling out characters, instead of "debut" I'm also going to go with "had a game release in." For example, while Chibi-Robo debuted in the 2000s, I'm counting him the 2010s as he had a new game come out recently. It doesn't change a lot, but does allow for a little more flexibility.

1980s:
1. Mach Rider (Mach Rider)

1990s:
1. Lip (Panel de Pon)

2000s:
1. Isaac (Golden Sun)

2010s:
1. Wonder Red (The Wonderful 101)
2. Chibi-Robo (Chibi-Robo: Zip Lash)
3. Dillon (Dillon's Rolling Western)

Honorable Mentions:
2000s:
-Ray MK III (Custom Robo)

2010s:
Yuri Kozukata (Fatal Frame 5)

Forces... eew. god, and to think that mess was released after sega said they'd be focusing on quality. Sonic really needs Ian Flynn for writing at the least and better gameplay. The boost sucks
This is the problem with it, the Boost gameplay is a shallow mechanic.

Let's look at the Classics. In those games (and Mania) you have the Spindash. The Spindash has actual downsides that mean it's not always the best choice for going fast, but because you need to come to a stop and charge it, you need to decide when that extra burst of speed is going to save time in the long run or if you're better off just continuing to run. Because it puts you into a rolling state you need to decide if it's worth putting yourself more at the mercy of the terrain or staying on your feet so you can manually accelerate (or take the risk of Spindashing and find an opportunity to hop to your feet). You need to think ahead regarding loops and wall/ceiling runs because you can't Spindash if you aren't on the ground. Because the spindash isn't always available or ideal, nor is it how you reach the fastest speeds, other game mechanics like the slope physics and various level gimmicks have time to shine. It's about balance.

Meanwhile, if you want to go fast in a boost game, just press boost. That's it. That's always the right answer. It's essentially instant, continuous top speed at the press of a button, usable in almost any situation, for only the cost of some fuel that the game almost constantly throws at you. Slower paced gameplay and platforming? Super stiff and restricting.

ShayMay puts it best.

I recommend watching the whole series (it's just 3 parts), the guy's brilliant.

Okay, just wanted to make sure.
80s: Mach Rider (would've chosen Takamaru if he was eligible)
90s: Ray (Custom Robo)
00s: Isaac (Golden Sun)
10s: Dillon, Wonder Red, Spring Man
Only really care for one of these but I like those challenges.

1. Mach Rider - You really don't much other choices for your NES reps anymore. You have Excitebiker (who is already with Mach Rider's biking gimmick minus guns and other abilities), Mike Jones (does Japan even know his existence?), and Urban Champion (has too little content I think unless you use my idea for him). So it has the most usable content and the most "relevancy" as far as non-deconfirmed NES characters go.

2. Lip - I don't recall that many 90s characters that were an IP that haven't been used yet. We also don't really have a puzzle-based character that isn't Dr. Mario, who barely even resembles his original puzzle games with just a megavitamin neutral special/final smash. People also go nuts because she's a girl.

3. Chibi-Robo or Isaac - Chibi-Robo is more niche but I have a bias for him, plus his series is actually dead. Isaac on the other hand has a more dedicated fanbase and Golden Sun is still kicking as far as I know.

4. Elma - Xenoblade X seemed to have pretty good sales, but Xenoblade 2 did better. However, Xenoblade 2 was probably not considered when Sakurai made the final proposition, so that boosts her chances. I don't think Gen 7 Pokemon is able to be easily predicted, and ARMS is too late to get considered by the final proposition. Your only other option is Wonder Red, who I don't see high demands for. He certainly has his fans, but Xenoblade has more.

2000's Rep: Chibi-Robo
2010's Reps: Dillon's Rolling Western, ARMS, Pushmo

This was actually pretty tough to do, especially with the idea of advertising/relevance needing to matter. Finding a 90's-originating, Nintendo-owned IP that wasn't dead or already playable in Smash proved impossible, so I went with an option that I think could be revisited soon and become relevant again. I waffled between Pushmo and Boxboy, but I think Boxboy's lacking moveset potential led me to pick Mallo over him.

Each Xenoblade is technically vastly different from each other. Didn't pay attention to the "new" IP rule, but really I don't see much other chances that isn't Wonder Red or the Nindie 3DS stuff.

I think Boost is fine, just make it harder to obtain.
Also: more playable characters.

Alright.

Your goal is to add new Nintendo IPs to Smash. These IPs will have playable representation.

However, the IPs must follow this pattern.

1 IP that debuted in the 1980s
1 IP that debuted in the 1990s
1 IP that debuted in the 2000s
3 IPs that debuted in the 2010s

Advertising still matters.

What do you choose?
1980s:

Ayumi Tachibana [Famicom Detective Club]

1990s:

Lip [Panel de Pon]

2000s:

Isaac [Golden Sun]

2010s:

Wonder Red [Wonderful 101]

Springman [ARMS]

Dillon [Dillon's Rolling Western]

I got carried away and ignored the rules at first.

God, that is the D R E A M. Smash bros is literally the only fighting game style I care for, I can't stand those one on one, face to face games like SF or arena style shown in Jump Force. A smash bros clone with Shonen characters would probably make me cry tears of joy :happysheep:
I agree for the most part. Though give me more games like Power Stone. Came out a month after Smash 64 did. It and 64 are still to this day my favorite games. Wish we’d get a Power Stone Collection or Power Stone 3 for Switch
