Official Smash Ultimate Discussion

Almost one month has passed since release. In retrospect....

  • This is by far the best Smash ever. Like, I don't even know how they will top this.

  • Pretty freakin' good; I have a few qualms over things like internet play, balancing issues, etc.

  • It's ok, but [insert Smash game here] is better.

  • I'd rather play Parcheesi.

That codename "leak" is far too cryptic for me to care. Especially since we've less than 24 hrs to wait.

And that Smash leak is just painfully fake. Shame on whoever it fools. A Smash game that just started development and is set to release next year? Plus the roster looks like a wishlist. Almost half those characters have missed the boat by now. Also, who is Cecilia? Do they mean Celica?

These leakers need to step their game up. :p

While it's a clear sign that he's showing up, possibly endgame, the term "Phase" could easily mean just that there are multiple phases in his boss fight. ....but if he's got different forms this time around.....maybe....just maybe.....this could be exactly what I was talking about in what needed to happen for him to have a shot at Smash....

I'm back after a long hiatus (but still active in Micaiah Supporters Twitter)... This is the first time since like 2015 I feel we would get something about Smash Bros soon... Maybe isn't the next Direct, but I feel something coming...

PD: Can someone show me that "wishful leaked roster"?

More importantly, 16 new characters?!?! That seems like an absurd amount. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe only included 6 new ones and they have substantially less work needed per character.

If I were a spurious leaker I'd go for a much smaller number. Probably 6:

- 2 returning veterans (Ice Climbers + Wolf)
- 2 New Nintendo Series (Inkling + Spring-Man)
- 1 Third Party (Ray-Man)
- 1 popular/ballot inspired choice (King K. Rool)
It's a SSB5 leak, not a SSB4 leak.

Also, why is 16 an absurd amount? We got 21 newcomers in SSB4. We got 18 newcomers in Brawl.

You are miscounting.

Without including DLC (since they were added POST-RELEASE) and the last minute costume-turned-clones (because that counts as "filler"), we only got 13 that legitimately count, not 21. 15 if you want to arbitrarily count the Miis separately.

And considering that we're at a point that simply "adding" characters is a hassle, unless we're in for a major roster rehaul and have to say goodbye to a large quantity of who we already have, we'd be lucky to even get CLOSE to 16.

Depending on the timing and direction of the "port", this is a pretty sound estimate + a new mode/ combined 3DS/Wii U features and stages,, amongst other little tidbits.

I remember this same absurd idea was floating around during the release of Smash 4 too. And Brawl even.
"The roster's too big, we're getting cuts and maybe 10 newcomers!!!1".

If the design was workable, there would have been no question in making him playable.

And how would Little Birdie even have worked or actually represent Ridley rather than itself other than being "the first stage in Ridley's life cycle"?
Ridley almost has a move set in Pyro Sphere. It's not complete by any means, but it seems as thought was still involved in the way he moves around the stage. Ridley is certainly more detailed in his moves than the other stage hazard characters. Sakurai even stated he tried to make him work but couldn't. So that's the reason why.

Little Birdie could be a mechanic for Ridley you know. Small weak and frail as Little Birdie, but survival makes him eventually evolve to Ridley, in which case it's revenge time. It's an unique mechanic, gives Ridley sense to being huge and powerful, and adds to balance. It's certainly a better idea fit for Smash than the original concept.

No Smash today.

Soonest it's happening would probably be E3 2018 and that's generous.
We did get a shout out during the Metroid Samus Returns section though.

Does anyone know if this was in the Japanese direct as well?

Yeah, I guess that YouTube tag thing really was just a mistake... Either that or some employee trolling us, 'cause what a weird mistake that was. Oh well, I didn't get my hopes up too high, so I'm safe from the no-Smash blues so far. LOL

We did get a shout out during the Metroid Samus Returns section though.
Eh? What happened?

During the Samus Returns section, they mentioned that "Smash bros fans" should pay attention, or something to those lines. It's a really weird callout.

chances are it's just them going, "well Metroid is a hardcore series, and smash bros fans are hardcore, so let's keep them paying attention" or something along those lines. Nothing to freak out about too fast.

A Distant Demon A Distant Demon Wow, I didn't even notice that... That's just bizarre, and could honestly be taken a number of different ways if people want to start analyzing it, which they probably will. :p

That was clearly a tease of Ridley at the end of the Samus Returns segment, meaning that he's probably in the game (unsurprisingly). They mention Smash fans because of how big of a name Ridley is in the Smash scene, probably meant as a light jab.

...

Nah, Ridley confirmed for Smash.

This is the kind of theory crafting that led to the Ridley fanbase becoming a punching bag for the community.

Let's this be a warning to all of you not to get your hopes too high, as awesome as it would be. And also a warning to not make anyone a punching bag.

I mean, the tease is clear, and it's about the chances of Ridley appearing in Smash Bros. This or that shout out wuldn't make any kind of sense whatsoever. Now, of course, that doesn't mean Ridley will appear as a playable character, but still, as a callout it would be pretty stupid and useless.
They totally teased Ridley in Smash. I mean, that entire segment was them going like "Hey, guess who's back? Ridley! This is interesting for Metroid fans, but also Smash Bros. fans!". lol Doesn't make sense

Or maybe they mentioned Smash Bros. because it's the only decently popular game Samus has been in for the past 7 years?

Whether or not the Ridley and Smash Bros shout-out is an outright confirmation of Ridley in the next Smash, I'm more of the opinion that it
That it could also just be a teaser he's a boss in Metroid: Samus Returns.

Still, if they somehow did figure out a way to make Ridley playable and he does show up in the next Smash, colour me surprised.

And I predict we'll probably in the near future see a bit more "Doomguy/Doom Slayer for Smash" support, though I doubt that. It would be cool to see if Doomguy could work in Smash.

Btw, we all agree that shoutout was absolutely unnecessary, weird and obnoxiously stupid, am i right?

I don't like this kind of behaviour by Nintendo at all.
Or rather, I love it when after a bit of time they give us exactly what we want and even more

Eh, Ridley showing up in the next Smash game in general is extremely likely anyway. There was data on Ridley, and if I remember right, it wasn't among the leftover Brawl data section, but a new set of information. I guess at one point they wanted to try and put him in, but didn't pan out. Probably 3DS limitations. Also, what Gwen said.

Would be awesome if he became playable in Smash Switch, but I ain't getting my hopes up.

Gasping at straws there bro. You're looking way too deeply into it. The whole Melee Counter thing was probably invented because of Smash and how Samus fights far more physical in Smash than in previous Metroid games. That's the only 'reading in between the lines' that can be done.

Remember Ridley in the clouds...? This is the exact same thing.
This is the kind of theory crafting that led to the Ridley fanbase becoming a punching bag for the community.

obligatory 'I would love to see ridley in smash because the following opinion might be seen as intentional contrarian nonsense meant to deride fans' disclaimer

I don't think that the tracks being listed as 'phases' will mean that Ridley somehow starts smaller. Like, it could easily mean that every phase of his presumed boss battle uses a slightly different track or remix, whatever, but I feel like that's a massive stretch, and the admittedly odd Smash mention in the Samus Returns segment yesterday only makes this worse.

Just a thought.

If nothing else SR ensures Ridley has relevance on his side in case the team changes their mind about Ridley being playable. That would be a welcome surprise.

About this
Ridley doesn't have a small size. He's huge like his other 2D appearances. He also has a traditional skinny as **** design while being Meta Ridley too

If I remember correctly, the 3DS version had Ridley boss data alongside Nabbit and Metal Face, likely as a leftover from Wii U.

Either that or I'm misremembering.

The boss battle has him at his usual size, and the Smash mention is presumably because the footage is from his boss fight and they know that he's popular in the Smash community.

For reference, there's already videos of the fight, which I'll spoiler-tag again to be safe.

I said data. Not character data. Boss Data is more accurate, though. I remember information on that from the 3DS version(as Opossum said) that had some boss information, along with Pyrosphere. He was among the various bosses like Metal Face. I think he also showed up among the Brawl boss information too, but I don't remember that as well as the other point.
