Looking back through the Brawl Codecs, if codecs were to return, many of them would have to be changed due to being obsolete. Link's stands out. Luigi's and ROB's aren't necessarily out of date, but they could theoretically be updated. Mario's might need an update too, considering that it's the second time Snake will face off against Mario. Others would need updates as well.

I do hope they bring back codecs though, they were always really fun.

tbf Snake's a veteran and Metal Gear is a beloved franchise. I'm certain Snake's who Sakurai referred to when he said Bayonetta was in the top 5 alongside veterans

UNIQUE NEWCOMERS

Simon Belmont- Very heavily likely to due Vergeben's leak being mostly true.
Ashley- Very popular Nintendo in general appear in ads outside of Wario and she also is the only Warioware character with a Mii Costume. Her Assist Tropjy hasn't been seen yet.
Bandana Dee- A pretty popular request. There's also evidence backing his inclusion because of his amiibo data in Woolly World acting similar to Daisy who's in Smash.
King K. Rool- Considering the Newcomers is mostly fanservice themed and he had a Mii Costume which may be a hint that he was a Ballot Consolation Prize.
Mach Rider- My Guess on the Retro Rep. Sakurai bought a mech for the rifle it had, it doesn't fit Elma or Inklings. But the guy does look similar to Mach Rider's so I believe it was for her.
Lloyd Irving- My guess at the 2nd Namco Rep. He had a Mii Costume released alongside King K. Rool during the period of which the ballot was most likely slowed down. So I believe the costume was a consolation prize like K. Rool.

ECHO FIGHTER

Funky Kong- He's a pretty popular character in general in both US and Japan. He even made it into Mario Kart Wii and Tropical Freeze Switch. Plus I'm trying to think more like Sakurai here for this prediction.

Ninten- The only Mother Protagonist missing. Considering the increase of Mother Representation in the game I think he'll make it in.

Isabelle- Very popular character, but I think she won't be unique enough to stand out towards the other newcomers set by 4's standards since Villager took most of the things from Animal Crossing already.

Some patterns will definitely be broken, if we get fewer newcomers we can't get all of the usual stuff. Say we get 8 or so newcomers in total, having to cram in a retro, peripheral, Pokémon, Fire Emblem and 3rd party character or two into the remaining 6 spots leaves very little room for creativity. I think it's best to just forget about what we knew before and view this game as having its own unique criteria.

This discussion came up earlier. In a technical sense yes, because between Ice Climbers and melee was 16 years and so from now and early GBA/Game Cube is similar.

However I think it would have to be a series that didn't continue on, for example Golden Sun did make its way to the DS. And we've never had retro characters from a non-retro series so King K. Rool doesn't really work either (plus there's his sluggers appearance).

Until we get a confirmation that a retro character can be GBA/GameCube (which I doubt Sakuri would ever confirm) I wouldn't consider it likely. Especially when there are other NES titles still to rep.

I don't know if they say it in that video, but I'm pretty sure Nintendo or Sakurai one has come out and said they made this game from the ground up, which is pretty evident in how much better some of the veterans looks and animations are. If making from the ground up=port plus then yeah you got me it's a port plus.

Correct me if they released the official tallies, but, while Bayonetta was popular, I feel like there were characters who blew her out of the water vote-wise. I'm only playing devil's advocate because I've worked in games before and I know how things happen behind the scenes from a marketing-perspective (at least going off the games that I've worked on). I honestly think that she was already planned based on a popularity prediction AND marketing: she's a popular 3rd party rep with a developer that Nintendo has a good relationship with on top of the fact that she had a NINTENDO EXCLUSIVE game that launched at about the same time as Smash 4. Bayonetta might've been in the top 10, but I definitely don't think she won the ballot (or was even in the top 5).

Again, I'm not saying this is definitely what happened. I'm just talking based on experience in the industry.

I assume you're just trolling, but in case you aren't and truly are just ignorant I'll fill you in. Despite what many think, this game is built completely from the ground up. It wouldn't matter what it added from then on, but the fact it was built from scratch just shows it's not a port, no debating about that.

Also, if you want to talk about toxicity, might want to reread your posts because of all the unnecessary swearing.

Mach Rider who I believe is our secret Retro Rep.

She uses a gun while riding a motorcycle and I believe Sakurai got that gun so he can figure out how to do her Ride and shoot gimmick she'd likely have. That's the only theory I have since the Gun doesn't seem to match Inklings moveset at all.

Didn't we rule out Mach Rider on the premise that Mach Rider uses a Machine Gun whereas the model used a Rifle?

A Konami rep I see people never mention that isn't Simon is Bill Rizer. He's had a rich history and like Castlevania, hasn't seen much content in a while. In fact, his titles are one of the most classic on the NES, if not as great as Castlevania itself.
