Yeah, but the difference here is the R.O.B. actually had a major impact on not just Nintendo but gaming as an entirety. Beyond that, he's a legitimate retro. I don't think anything beyond the SNES/64 era can count as "retro."

Well to dive further, I was looking at more Japanese exclusives at the time like Marth/Roy back in Melee, which were heavily unknown unless you played FE way back then. Captain Rainbow fills that void of being unknown until Smash representation. But once again, possible or not, I wouldn't be surprised about it.

How am I being pessimistic exactly? If you count Echoes, we've got 3 new characters, in addition to 7 returning (Ice Climbers, Ivysaur, Squirtle, Snake, Pichu, Wolf and Toon Link), we're at 10 additional characters from the past game. Right now, we are in the ballpark of what's added character-wise for new Smash games, albeit on the low end.
For the sake of true fans, I hope Lip makes it in. Most of you guys are pretty chill.

Well, we've been beaten so thoroughly into dust at this point in time by Nintendo and Intelligent Systems ignoring us to shill Fire Emblem and limit Panel de Pon's representation in Smash Bros.--the series's one hope of coming back at this point--that most of us...sorta can't help but be mellow. If we're anything more than that, we're setting ourselves up for disappointment. But I'm hoping every day that this is our girl's chance to take the spotlight and show the world what she can do.
Fire Emblem was a successful franchise in Japan though, and also melee was made 17 years ago, japanese only characters aren't considered anymore (lucas doesn't really count, sakurai didn't know his game wasn't gonna release worldwide)
That's how I always felt about Takamaru.
Doesn't change the fundamental thought of being an actual surprise factor if he was to be introduced. The list there does lack proof, but turning a blind eye to it is not recommended.
But what evidence is there that Sakurai has ever put a character in just for the surprise factor?

I think after Corrin, Sakurai's going to be wary off adding a new Fire Emblem character. At least, not until other boxes are checked.
The leak is fake. It's from a random person online with no evidence or history, trying to impersonate someone else to increase their credibility.
I'm going to be shocked if that leak from here is real, why would Vergeben make three different accounts and fail to verify any of them, then post his leak into a newly created alt on reddit? To look fake, and get less attention than he normally would? Why would he ever want that? It's fake.
