Official Smash Ultimate Discussion

Almost one month has passed since release. In retrospect....

  • This is by far the best Smash ever. Like, I don't even know how they will top this.

  • Pretty freakin' good; I have a few qualms over things like internet play, balancing issues, etc.

  • It's ok, but [insert Smash game here] is better.

  • I'd rather play Parcheesi.

Can someone tell me why Mr. Saturn shows up next to Olimar in not one, but two promotional pictures? It's the only character in those pictures that isn't playable. Placeholder or nah?
People are overthinking it. It's a gag. Olimar's head resembles Mr. Saturn.

I just don't really see Isabelle being actual fighter material; she's more of a person who prefers to assist others, so her Assist Trophy position in Smash 3DS / Wii U made a lot of sense.

As for Ashley and Phosphora, I guess they could make the playable cut, though my thoughts on Ashley's possible moveset are very blank.
To be fair, villager wasn't "fighter material" in sakurai's eyes a few years ago, if they want her playable then they'll make her playable

Considering what Sakurais done for the entire cast, I want to say he's focusing on pleasing as many people as possible this time around, pure fanservice and no gimmicks for the sake of gimmicks. So I have a question. If you had to pick a single character JUST because of a gimmick they could bring in, who'd it be? I'd add Sol Badguy from Guilty Gear and have his gimmick be air dashing
Steve from Minecraft since he could bring terraforming, something we've yet to see in Smash.

That makes sense.

Sakurai did say BOTW Zelda was into researching than fighting so he went with ALTTP/ALBW Zelda.

Gimmicks are fanservice to meI'd add Aegis from Persona 3 as a fighter with an overdrive mode.

I remember hearing people talk about height differences between the Links yesterday. Is this something that should be looked into, or does it look weird at all?

I know I'm rehashing, but about a month ago, I came up with a gimmick Tingle I really liked.

The idea was that, whenever Tingle hits someone, rupees come out of them. If he collects the rupees, they get added to his rupee counter (above his percent meter). The more rupees he has, the more damage he deals.

Additionally, Tingle can spend rupees to use his special moves. His Up B, for instance, allows him to free-fly with balloons while retaining the ability to fight, but it slowly drains rupees. His neutral B allows him to launch a continuous "rupee laser," but it rapidly drains rupees. His Down B allows him to summon bodyguards to fight for him, similar to Assist Trophies, but they cost a sum of rupees.

I'd pick Jubei from Blazeblue his gimmick would be a changeable duel blade stance.

I'm going to continue to plug Joker.

His gimmick would be Wild Card where he knocks down fighters and absorbs their asses stealing their abilities as a Persona so he's basically human Kirby

His gimmick would be Personas. He'd have 3, being Arsene, Jack Frost, and Mara a prominent third Persona who change the properties of all his special attacks. Down B switches Personas.

Young Link's proportions seem odd. Like his limbs seem too thick and he's almost as tall as Link, even if Link was standing up straight. If you scaled Young Link up to be the same height as Link, he'd look ridiculously swole.

So, this is some interesting stuff, here.

Biggest thing to note is that the game is confirmed to have had a four year cycle, and the development is not currently being rushed. Also, Sakurai's not pushing himself harder than usual at the moment, though he does want this to be the definitive Smash game.
What in the world?!?!?! That explains the job posting and Sakurai being able to bring every veteran back into Ultimate. What does this mean for characters like Elma and Rex?!?! Is the ballot even taken to account?

Young Link is the same height as Adult Link.

Yeahhh, Smash doesn’t really do well with heights, I mean look Pit and Palutena. One’s a short looking wider dude and the other is Tall proportionate goddess and they have the same height.

Young Link looks hideously frightening when placed alongside BotW Link.
Possibly side effect from using the Giant's Mask? :p

So is it safe to assume the reminaing newcomers are going to be from the Ballot?

Yeah I think they made Young Link a bit too tall. Then again, I guess they where trying to strike a middle ground between Toon Link and Link (When he stands upright)

So Sakurai basically worked on two games at the same time.

If that is true then this means that we are getting a lot more new content and newcomers than everyone expected. Elma and Rex/Pyra probably are more likely than ever. Plus 4-years is double the amount of time developed for a Smash game, we could even get a story mode within that time.

Link to the information?

Magic, Potions and hexes with buffs and debuffs and stuff, summoning thanks to red. She has more than enough potential
I don't really have an opinion on Ashley, but again I think the concern is the standard moveset. Contrary to what some people have asserted, it's not a good character if it just does whatever that looks like something the character would do. There has to be some sort of goal with how all the moves fit together.
If "has magic" was a good enough answer, Zelda wouldn't have been garbage in every previous installment (and even then she has much more of a design than that).

Young Link grew up and Link has his knees bent

Their heights are actually pretty accurate
Moveset potential is literally infinite.
Infinite for Smash

We’re talking size even after Ridley’s reveal?

Though I guess it’s the proportions that really matter. Don’t see anything wrong with Young Link tbh.

People have provided a goal for her moveset. Someone said she's a magic user who has hexes to debuff and Red who can shapeshift. The goal is to create a character who thrives on debuffing enemies and then using Red's shapeshifting to launch/defeat them. There's a goal. You can work some simpler magic abilities and wand strikes into her normals, Red into her smashes, and hexes and potions into her specials. It would remain true to the character, it would have a direction for what she does, and it would be interesting.

If Ashley does get revealed they better set her reveal trailer in Luigi's Mansion.

It just makes a lot of sense.

I'm guessing that Sakurai began development of Ultimate alongside DLC for Smash 4.

If that's the case, then he likely made it his first order of business to bring back all the characters. He could tell his team to do that and oversee changes to characters like Wolf, who needed a new model, but could have plenty of time focusing on DLC characters in the meantime before worrying about newcomers.

Then we know that Bayonetta was announced in December of 2015, so Sakurai likely took his breather after she was released before coming to his "next project" in the form of newcomers for Ultimate in late January or early February of 2016.

By that time, he likely already had tweaked returning characters for Ultimate like Zelda, and he could then begin selecting relevant newcomers (with the ballot as a reference.)

Are you sure we are not misinterpreting this 4 year deal? It could be that he is just mentioning the gap of release between two smash games.

That would be one way of looking at it. But IDK. I am unsure about all of this.

I am starting to think Waluigi will be playable.

• He must have been really high on the ballot.
• Sakurai is sneaky.
• Waluigi is sneaky.
• The game displayed here is a demo build.
• Requested character Daisy got in and Toad now helps Peach fight during throws.

Honestly though it makes sense that they would start while DLC was still happening, I can't imagine it would take a whole development team to make 7 characters and a couple stages over the course of like a year.

I'm pretty sure not, because that answer was specifically in response to the speed of development. He was asking if they were pushing themselves hard to get this game out, and the answer was no, that it was 2014 when the last game's development ended and they've had four years.

This is the next Ridley Stagehazard fake out theory, isn’t it?

Waluigi hasn't been seen in action in the demo

But actually don't get your hopes up. Waluigi was one of the main characters when they revealed Smash 4 AT's, and he was revealed in the AT portion of the E3 Direct this year. By thinking Sakurai is gonna pull a 180, you're basically reliving the Ridley's Shadow ordeal.
