Since we’re talking about Atlus. If Sakurai did were to add a character from an Atlus series, do you think it’d be a Shin Megami Tensei or Persona character?

I personally see reasons for both.

Personally, I'd want an SMT character.
In that regard, I see "The Hero" from SMT1 being the "Marth" pick who gets chosen out of seniority
I see "The Demifiend" pick from SMT3 being the "Cloud" pick who gets chosen out of popularity
I see the Flynn/SMTV protag pick from SMT4 being the "Corrin" pick who gets chosen out of recency/promotion

I see Jack Frost as the "Pikachu" pick in that he's the mascot of not only every game under the Megaten banner, but also the mascot of the damn company itself.

How can we determine when a character Sakurai has considered, but ultimately dismissed, has potential for a Villager/Pac-Man scenario?

Like, most of us can agree that Ayumi Tachibana is doomed and that Toon Sheik isn't going to randomly show up.

But a lot of us argue about whether Ridley or Takamaru or Balloon Fighter or Excitebiker are worth reconsidering as possibilities.

Personally, I think it comes down to prominence in recent games, popularity, and potential for realizable interesting gameplay. But what would you guys say?

I think fan support and prominence are the two biggest ones. If Wild World didn't lock its spot as one of the best-selling games of the DS, and if New Leaf wasn't so hyped, I don't think Villager would've ever got in. And fan support is definitely why Ridley is still being brought up

It would easily be Jack Frost. Being Atlas' mascot, he trumps everyone.

I don't NECESSARILY agree, since I prefer Dragon Warrior over Slime for a Dragon Quest character, but I don't know enough about Shin Megami Tensei.

Here's my question; does Jack Frost DO anything that's iconic to the series? I mean, besides just being a mascot, would he have a good moveset that portrays the important aspects of what you do in Shin Megami Tensei?

And also, while Persona isn't on Nintendo consoles, Persona 5 has sold a ton more than any other individual game in the franchise. Atlus would definitely suggest Joker to Sakurai if they were approached about this.

I've always seen the Persona series as a Sony series, and SMT to Nintendo. So if I were Sakurai, Jack Frost would be the logical choice. Then again, this means nothing since Snake and Cloud have been in Smash. Joker has the edge over Jack Frost in terms of sheer popularity after all. It's up in the air, really

There are only two stages I see being in for Persona and that's the Velvet Room as some sort of staple for the entire Persona series or the Casino for being like Gaur Plains in that it is extremely popular and instantly recognizable to beginners.

I feel like it would be Mementos, and man that music leaves a lot to be desired But they'll probably add several songs and those will certainly be bangers.

Also, here is an article with the lifetime sales of Atlus franchises. Persona has more sales than SMT even though its 9 years younger and has less than half as many entries. And that gap has certainly only grown as Persona 5 becomes more popular outside of Japan.

I personally see reasons for both.

It'd be a SMT character without a doubt.
Significantly stronger connection to Nintendo as well as more game history, which are both things Sakurai really likes in his third parties.

Plus, Jack Frost not only appears in a majority of the SMT games, but is the mascot of Atlus itself. On the other hand, Persona doesn't really have a reoccuring character or mascot, unless you really want Igor or The Reaper in Smash.

This leak is absolutely fake. I don't think that there will be any Persona content in Smash. That franchise has not even touched Nintendo consoles outside of spinoffs.

Listen, I still believe Joker has a real shot for Smash. I can write down several good points in his favor, and I think he has an incredible shot at DLC. This particular rumor I believe is fake, though. If it's real, you mother****ers will never hear the end of it from me because Joker is in Smash. But I'm not putting faith in this rumor.

P5 for Switch and Joker for Smash. If this happened words couldn't describe the joy I'd feel.

And so, I decided to do my little research, and it appears that ever since it was announced a year ago. Persona Q2 is ALWAYS in the Top 5 of most anticipated games in japan. Which is EXTREMELY surprising knowing that he know nothing about the game, and it's on the 3Ds and a Spin-off
And another interesting point. Persona 5 Seems to basically be now in the usual Japan's Best game of All Time ranking constantly...

I'd say Jack Frost is more comparable to Moogles or Chocobo than Pikachu. He doesn't have the same worldwide recognition

Jack Frost is a demon from the Megaten franchise and is the mascot of the series and the company, Atlus, as a whole, being featured in almost if not all SMT games as well as being referenced in a few non-SMT games as well.

On the Jack Frost side of things, he is in basically every Megami Tensei game in some capacity. He's made small cameos in other Atlus games as well. Not to mention, in 2017, he received his own platformer game where he has Jack-O-Lantern following him, Jack Frost has been and always will be relevant to Atlus.

Along with this, apparently Takamaru is also playable. I've learned this from the source who informed me about Joker saying that his reveal trailer, which is apparently subtitled and uses the Japanese voices, has Joker using his Final Smash on Roy, Takamaru, and Pikachu, with it being an in-joke as they share the same Japanese VA as Joker, Yusuke, and Morgana respectively.

Double checking the VAs... Sugita voices Takamaru? Holy **** I hope they either don't give him an English dub or we get dual audio. Sugita's the best.

He said that Ridley will have to be stripped down, wings reduced in size, and unable to fly around freely. Sakurai thinks that this will be a disservice to the iconic character, so he decides to instead put him in roles that are far more suited to him.

He also said Villager has a special "cuteness" to them that wouldn't make them suitable as a fighter, back in Brawl.
Of course this doesn't mean Sakurai magically will change his opinion towards

I personally see reasons for both.

Persona 5 just sold too well to be ignored. At the same time though, P5 came right after the Smash team probably locking up the roster, and its status as a best seller didn't really come until its worldwide release. So maybe if we're thinking about base game, it could be like Jack Frost, or who knows maybe even a Tokyo Mirage Sessions character (that's a middle-ground between 1st and 3rd though)

But if we're thinking about the entire SSB5 lifespan including DLC, I personally think Joker is one of the most likely. It'd be kind of a Cloud situation this time around

On this topic, wouldn't it be sick as hell if they made fancier stylized victory screens like this for every character Instead of the normal character in the boring empty room doing one of a few poses every time they win?

That'd be radical. The only issue is, when the screen transitions to the 2D renders, it'd have to ignore the skin/alt costume the character is currently wearing and default to the main skin.

Pretty much this. I'm now 30 and I've participated in speculation for the past three games but my tolerance for it is way down since the Brawl days when I was here on an almost daily basis from E3 2006 to the NA launch. That's why I go AWOL for sometimes months at a time and forfeited my modship because,, I love Smash but, man, I work full time, am planning a wedding, planning a giant community event in my city, etc I just don't have the time for it like I used to, especially when speculation hits all too common snags.

I'm kind of confused about this guy, I tried google and he seems to be a "concept" that's not even owned by anyone. He dates back to the 1800s. There's movies and books and games and TV shows about this guy and he's used by a ****-ton of different companies in completely different ways. He's no game character.

EDIT: Then again, neither are people like Hades or Medusa in theory. I'm just both surprised and confused about this guy, haha.

This came out earlier today. I was thinking about Isabelle as a fighter yesterday and thought of an aspect that they could use for her: changing outfits. It's such an integral part of the series that I can't believe it slipped my mind. It could be her standard special move where if you hold the B button long enough, she changes outfits, giving her a different standard special. For example, she could have a raincoat that lets her spin a rain soaked umbrella or a parka that lets her throw snowballs or a bee keeper outfit that surrounds her with a shield of bees or a kimono that lets her launch mini fireworks. There's a lot of creative things they could do with this concept.

I think an outfit gimmick would probably go to someone from Style Savvy, or from AC the Able Sisters or Blanca transforming into other AC characters, but it does make sense for her due to the fact she is one of the few important NPCs to have an entire wardrobe with different outfits for every holiday.
