Official Smash Ultimate Discussion

Almost one month has passed since release. In retrospect....

  • This is by far the best Smash ever. Like, I don't even know how they will top this.

  • Pretty freakin' good; I have a few qualms over things like internet play, balancing issues, etc.

  • It's ok, but [insert Smash game here] is better.

  • I'd rather play Parcheesi.

What's everyone's beef with Minecraft?

Everyone's played it at one point in their life.
It's been around for years and is constantly seeing a huge player base. It's literally available on everything.
Is it too childish now? Too blocky? Or just not worthy to be in Smash?

It's definitely the biggest game of this generation and would have massive pull in getting new players into Smash.

That's the point with these big name newcomers: getting new players to buy the game.

The problem people have with Smash speculation is that they live in their own bubble of what they deem important. A character, stage or gameplay mechanic is sentimental and important to them, so they feel personally attacked when that isn't represented in Smash.

So the idea of something that they personally dislike getting into Smash over their own idea becomes the worst thing in the world.

Fans of the game are going to buy it no matter what.

People need to take a step back and think bigger. And no that's not a Ridley pun. Him being in Smash is a long time coming, but he's not a household name helping to sell additional copies.

Minecraft sells. Period. If Sakurai wants that represented in the game it's a huge win.
Because Minecraft is generally associated with toddlers and autism. Sorry to be blunt, but that's the cold hard truth.

Mario can grunt and goes Yippie Yahoo, but I doubt he can hold a conversation, lol.
Marie can, but he either comes off as a murderer or inappropriate
If Snake is back, I truly hope we get the Codec discussion once again.

They were miles better than the Palutena guidance
debatable...for me atleast

What if Isabelle and Tom Nook are skins for Villagers... basically like Alph was for Olimar in Smash 4?

I wouldn't mind.

They're all technically villagers within the village, no?

If Ridley really ends being playable... how much the internet will break? what will be the reaction in all the webs? how many reaction videos would be on youtube?
Fam there were already reaction videos only half an hour after the teaser trailer was revealed in the Direct.

****s gonna be wild if a playable Ridley actually happens.
Who knows maybe there will be a crying Etika in one of those reaction compilation videos.

A side reason I really hope Ridley will be announced at E3 (yknow, besides it being amazing) would be to see Etika’s reaction.

I think he would literally pass out on-stream.

Regarding "Why not talk about gameplay vs roster": I'm pretty sure it's because more people see pictures or texts about characters than see/play the actual game. So if the "source" is telling the truth, they're probably someone who hasn't touched the game, but have either seen internal emails/applications/submissions for different characters.

Nope. Not even close.

Tom Nook and Isabelle represent the two most important aspects of the series that Villager simply can't.

You could put some of the villagers like Bob or what not as skins for him, but that might be hard considering they're animals of different species and might have different hitboxes.

The cold hard truth is that if you're worried about autism stereotypes, you probably shouldn't be passionately arguing about video game characters to be included in a Japanese crossover party game on an internet forum.
But if we throw this other specific demographic of people under the bus, then it's fine because we can be the in-group by contrast.

I know reading comprehension can be hard, but I was asking why do people know all these characters but haven't mentioned gameplay.

Also, in your mind no one cares, but this Evo Melee will be more hype than Sm4sh and have a Sunday spot. Even when they gave Sm4sh a Sunday slot and not Melee, Melee hit the same numbers on a Saturday. You know why? Because the gameplay, not the roster. But please go on and tell me more.
Melee is very popular, but Melee players who are in deep enough to view things like the physics engine and the number of movement options as a make/break aspect of a new Smash game are in the minority. Most people care a lot more by the new characters, stages, and modes when making a decision on whether or not to buy a new Smash Bros game.

It's the same reason the vast majority of people would be dissatisfied if the roster were to be downsized to focus on vets. Sure, certain fans would be pleased to have a Mario or Samus that feels closer to canon, but the more casual fans would be wondering why the roster dropped 25 characters and only added 5 new ones to take their place.

Yea this is the thing. Let's look at both E3's prior to Smash 4's release.
We got the following newcomers:
  • Villager
  • Mega Man
  • Wii Fit Trainer
  • Palutena
  • Pac-Man
These are some sellable names. Animal Crossing is one of Nintendo's most popular franchises. Mega Man and Pac-Man are great hype for the older audience and probably appeal to some younger ones too. Wii Fit Trainer is the joke character. And Palutena will please fans of Kid Icarus Uprising. Also she will make people buy the game who are seeking a waifu.

I think looking at this gives us a general idea of what we could see at E3. Splatoon is Nintendo's newest big franchise so they will want to show off the Inklings a lot. The older and more hardcore audience would be jumping out their seats for Ridley, Simon Belmont or King K. Rool. Whoever the ballot pick is should defnitley be shown as that is what the fans asked for so therefore they would be excited to see them revealed at E3. Wii Fit Trainer may have been the 'joke character' but still it was a unique moveset, so IF theoretically Rhythm Girl is added (I should stop dreaming), that could definitley make people feel the same. Also shoving in someone from a recognisable IP makes sense be that Captain Toad, Impa or Bandana Dee.

I just don't like Minecraft. I buy Smash with the knowledge that many kids play it. I don't care that adding Steve would get more kids to play Smash. That can be nothing but a good thing for the series. More money = more iterations (usually)

I don't like the blocky characters. I don't like the culture the game has created. I detest the shear number of fanmade Minecraft books I see every single day at work. I HAAAATE the obnoxious Minecaft parody songs. They are the cringiest part of the internet for me (I don't go anywhere near tumblr or 4chan so).

I did play Minecraft in the past (the xbox 360 version and the mobile version). I remember loving to see the crazy maps people would make and all the crazy redstone contraptions they would create. I still admire that because I could never get the stuff to work.

But that part of my life is long gone and most of what is left is just the obnoxious playerbase that acts like the game is worth worshiping. It makes me uncomfortable to say the least.

Y'all can like Minecraft. I don't care and I'm not hating on the playerbase, just the vocal minority. If Minecraft is in Smash I won't throw a hissy fit about "kids playing a mans game" or whatever the hell people are saying. I actually do kinda like the idea of a trophy or stage. I really, really don't want Steve to be a playable character, though. Thats just me.

You can make Nook and Isabelle with Villager moveset.
But you definitely shouldn't.

As Toom Nook I want to throw money and furniture at people. I want to evolve mid-stock considering how much money I got from battle. Maybe build a market where people who enters raise percentage.

As Isabelle... something about axing a opponent as Isabelle just don't see right.

I'm not worried about stereotypes, my dude and i admit I may have a bit of the 'tism myself. I'm just explaining Minecraft's negative connotation. No need to react negatively.

A stage based on Animal Crossing Pocket Camp could be interesting. Players battle on top of a RV and it travels around the camp. It could be like Big Blue and Spirit Train.

Alright, Imma give you the truth.

Snake probably isn't coming back, and Simon won't be a newcomer. Unless Nintendo quite litterally forced Sakurai to add Snake and Simon, Sakurai would probably not wish to colaborate with Konami. (Kojima was one of his friends.) Nintendo would probably not want to force Sakurai, since Sakurai is very control heavy in his games, and Nintendo might receive some bad press from woring with Konami.

If it wasn't for Simon/Snake, I could see the imgur leak being real, but those two discredit the entire leak.
I know I’m responding to it late, but those two are seriously the reason why you doubt these leaks? Not Sora or Vergeben’s track record.

And this is the truth? You can’t say this with 100 percent certainty.

If Sakurai wanted to put Snake back in, he would obviously consult with Kojima first before he goes in talks with Konami. And if Kojima gives him the okay, why would there be any problems working Konami?

Kojima still cares about MGS. The director of the MGS movie recently consulted with him about it. Add in the fact that he said he wanted him back in 4 during an interview and the ballot retweets indicate he still wants Snake in smash. I mean why wouldn’t he?

I get what you’re saying, but to say it like you’re spitting the 100 percent truth is as absurd as me going around saying Snake is 100 percent in because Vergeben said so.

Honestly, Minecraft is a great game for anyone. It's very appealing when it comes to creativity. This isn't specific to children. The only real thing that can be an issue is the aesthetics, as the blocky design isn't for everyone.

The trailer for Mega Man 11 is out! Here:
I am showing this to ask: do you see anything that Mega Man can use if he returns that would be useful?

Wii Fit trainer was probably revealed early so people would warm up to the idea of her as a character. R.O.B. was met with people generally angry when he was revealed in brawl as it was basically the last character and although i dont think R.O.B. is a "joke" he is a joke character and people were disappointed.

The last 3 brawl characters to be shown were toon link, wolf, and R.O.B. but many people saw "clone, clone, joke thats not even a game character" and were angry. WiiFit Trainer has a similar controversial reaction so they did that up front so people could "get over it", as obviously people have warmed up to R.O.B. and everyone else since but saving these types of characters for last can make the reaction towards the game itself negative even if characters like wario, pit, sonic, and diddy kong were also new in brawl and most loved these inclusions.

Imagine K.Rool and Ridley having a nice cup of coffee while Samus and Donkey Kong are at it. They are drinking eyes closed and between sips having conversations like:
Ridley: "Remember when you were just a mere trophy and I was too big? Those were the days.."
K.Rool: "oh ho ho yeaaah.. little they knew I was hidding in The Roost all the time. The laughs I had".

The way you associated it with autism in a negative way like that was rude, but aight.

Anyway, Minecraft while iconic and widely successful just doesn't seem like something that needs to be in Smash, not every iconic game has to be included. I love the idea of the stage though, and 3rd party stages in general but as far as Steve it's one of those things where I'm really skeptical but if it happens I may feel differently after seeing him in action.

And also, I think support conversations would be super fun and could work really well if done like Awakening and Fates, the minimal voice acting could lend itself well to the likes of Mario characters, Kirby and etc.

My only beef with Minecraft is that it’s an ugly game and my eyes are important to me.

But people like it and it’s huge and a half, so what are you gonna do.

As much as I love Mega Man, I don't think he'll change much in this Smash. Mega Man 11 is a little too late for Sakurai to plan new moves
Yeah. That does make sense. But what about BOTW Link though? I wonder if he could use Flurry Rush, Perfect Dodge and Perfect Guard. Maybe that would be broken if it was ripped from his game exactly.

Support convos actually would be pretty fun when you think about it. Imagine if you can fight with specific characters for a number of battles you'd be able to unlock special skits between them.

After watching lots of crossover material like the Marvel movies and Blazblue Cross Tag, I've noticed that the biggest thing that Smash is missing is character interactions. It's always very interesting to see all these different character personalities that we know and love clashing with each other. There's also a lot of potential with fanservice with references to various Nintendo games, which made the Snake codex so great. Problem is, it would only be limited to characters who can talk, like the FE characters, Kid Icarus, Star Fox. Mario can grunt and goes Yippie Yahoo, but I doubt he can hold a conversation, lol.
My thought with support conversations is to let other franchises in on the codex fun, as it was generally just Snake talking in the context of Metal Gear in Brawl and Pit/Palutena talking in the context of Uprising in 4. Subspace didn't really do it for me with character interaction because the characters were just miming and grunting, not even speaking through text. I want actual dialogue interactions in the crossover between the most iconic Nintendo franchises and characters, I feel it's a long time coming.

Your guess is as good as mine
A conversation on an Animal Crossing stage I think could end up being surprisingly humourous.
A New Leaf one set on the rooftops of the shops on Main Street where renovations happen periodically to change the layout.

I hope the continue with the Tortimer Island type of AC stages, Smashville and Town & City are so uninspired and blasé.

Edit: Ah you meant the codec thingys and not an actual discussion on stages, my bad~

Wouldn't be against a Minecraft character if it was fun to play as. Could also bring some cool elements to the game, items, a stage, and Smash Run enemies to name a few.

Of all the newcomers that realistically could happen, Steve is just behind Lyn for my least wanted character. I don't think Minecraft's ascetic would mesh super well with Super Smash Bros. Minecraft has a very unique and intentionally retro art-style that could either clash with the fluidity of Smash Bros (if they stay too close to the original game) or would look slightly uncanny and nothing at all like Minecraft (if they stray too far).

That being said, I can't see the "autism" discussion going anywhere productive. I think we're all aware of the more... out there aspect of Minecraft's fan base. I also don't think that's really going to influence Sakurai's decision on whether or not Minecraft will be in the game.

A travelling stage in the museum would be cool. The Aquarium could have you on floating platforms above the shark tank and falling in would cause you to be attacked by sharks. The bug room could have the bee item on trees and ants that could pick up items. In the fossil room you could climb dinosaur skeletons and maybe they would fall to the ground and you could use the bones as weapons. The Art Gallery could involve paintings coming to life?? I'm unsure for that one (It was always the most boring part of the museum anyway).

Woah, I want this as a stage now.

I played minecraft. enjoyed it. forgot about it.

4-5 years go by and suddenly minecraft merchandise everywhere, tons of youtube videos and every kid in the world asking about minecraft (i worked at a used video game store at the time) and im just baffled that it got insanely popular out of no where YEARS after its initial release.

I don't want it in smash but im not mad at it in smash, prefer it as a stage or a means to get banjo-kazooie though rather than something like steve as one of our 3rd party characters.

Well, that hurt. :chuckle: Anyways, I can't wait for the first introduction to Smash for Switch's gameplay on June 12th! Here's to hoping the game will not be a let down!

Not interested in Steve as a character. However- Sakurai could totally change my mind. I thought WFT and Duck Hunt Dog were so stupid, and DHD ended up being one of my favorite characters. So I'm open to it.
