Official Smash Ultimate Discussion

Almost one month has passed since release. In retrospect....

  • This is by far the best Smash ever. Like, I don't even know how they will top this.

  • Pretty freakin' good; I have a few qualms over things like internet play, balancing issues, etc.

  • It's ok, but [insert Smash game here] is better.

  • I'd rather play Parcheesi.

Beast Ganon would be the next best re-occurring main Zelda character that's consistent. It also follows the pattern of having a second incarnation of Link and Zelda with Toon Link and Sheik.
Sheik isn't an incarnation in the same sense as Toon Link, though. She was designed as an alternate form and by extension a part of Zelda's kit. Meaning there is no pattern, especially when you consider Toon Zelda and Toon Sheik as scrapped fighters in Brawl putting them as a 3rd and 4th incarnation of Zelda by that logic.

If Beast Ganon gets in, it'd be entirely under his own merits, not some contrived pattern.

Actually how would we feel about a character that's just 'Goron' or 'Korok' or 'Zora', who take the traits of all their characters in the series. I'd due to play as Darunia.

Deku Link, Goron Link, and Zora Link as three separate characters (no Masked Link transformations) would be awesome.

I honestly want Ganon (SNES style) in Smash. Of all versions of Ganon, that specific design of Ganon is the most recurring. That Ganon was in:
  1. The Legend of Zelda
  2. The Adventure of Link
  3. A Link to the Past
  4. Link's Awakening
  5. Oracle of Seasons
  6. Oracle of Ages
  7. Four Swords Adventures
  8. A Link Between Worlds
That Ganon is more feasible than the Ganon from Ocarina of Time, the Ganon from The Wind Waker, the Ganon from Twilight Princess, and especially the Ganon from Breath of the Wild. That Ganon appears to have a similar body build like Bowser so that's why I feel that Ganon is the most realizable.
So much yes. Impa and this version of Beast Ganon would round out the Zelda cast in Smash perfectly.

The Guardians sound like a fantastic choice for an Assist Trophy and a stage hazards. Should be an obvious future addition.

(just please, give us a stage hazard and boss on/off switch in all future Smash entries/updated versions!).

Going by past precedent, neither Sheik nor Toon Link got in because of some pattern.

Toon Link was a better version of Young Link that worked as a solid clone addition to the Smash roster, and Young Link got in because he was the best clone newcomer choice since Link was 12-16 years old in most Zelda games up to that point.

Sheik got in due to Sheik being in the right place at the right time. Her popularity was additionally entirely separate from Zelda's, with Sheik being seen as the cool mobile ninja character that eventually came to fruition.

Ganon and Ganondorf are even less attached than Zelda and Sheik are at this point (which is hardly at all).

Yeah, I totally agree, I think we need a newcomer from Breath of the Wild that truly brings the many unique things it has to the table.

Such as Kilton.

(I mean who else can represent Breath of the Wild in more ways than "lol this bomb is rolly"
The only thing I can think of is Impa going Yoda on people with Stasis and Magnesis boogaloo

I'm aware. It was an observation, sorta like a "hey, you know, if you think about it they're all second versions of the main 3" sort of point, not a reason to add him in. I probably should have made it more clear.

I don't really see any newcomer potential in Breath of the Wild other than the Breath of the Wild Link being a newcomer.

Zelda could be a newcomer too, sure, but why would you make her a newcomer when you can just replace the same dysfunctional Zelda hardly anyone likes that Smash has been cursed with for the last 16 years=???

If that was going to happen, it would be Melee. The time on the concept has passed, especially with the death of transformation characters (thank the Smash Gods).

If anything, we would just get a Zora or Goron character, but they're side characters at best. No side characters are playable in any Smash Bros title.

I just want Impa cause I think she's awesome.

I don't really want anymore Links, Zeldas or Ganons.

:4link::4zelda::4sheik::4ganondorf::4tlink:Impa is my ideal Zelda roster.

Yes, Impa, Tingle, Tetra, etc may have unique movesets, but would anyone outside of a specific fanbase really care for them?

No, they wouldn't. None of those characters have appeared in a new game since Twilight Princess, which came over over a decade ago. Those games are more footnotes in the series and of video games in that year.
Impa most definitely has appeared since then. She was in Skyward Sword, A Link Between Worlds, and Breath of the Wild, and I don't think she even appeared in Twilight Princess at all. Did you mean Midna?

Plus, to be fair to all those characters, while most of their newest appearances have been over 10 years ago, they've shown up often since. Many LoZ games have had remakes since, plus with Hyrule Warriors, (which they were all in) they've all managed to remain relevant for the last decade.

I also think Tingle in kind of a special case. He's had his own series, and is prime joke character material. I think his window to make it into Smash will always be open.

Just for the sake of it, let's entertain the idea that Bubsy the Bobcat got in Smash somehow. I don't particularly want him in but I gotta say I could kind of appreciate the thought of having a joke character as a guest. I imagine he'd have some of the same quirks as Luigi and Pichu, in that he often harms himself in the process of fighting and has to work extra hard to get any sort of KOs.

Some things they could adapt from his games could lend humor to the way he fights. For example, he'd be a fast faller, but falling from too great a height damages him (it kills him in his original games). He is clumsy and accident prone and would be the only character who trips (bringing back a mechanic from Brawl, but only applying it to him). It'd be exciting to see people try and use him as a viable character regardless of his flaws.

I'm excited to see what the DLC story aspect of BotW will be. If it brings back a familiar villain, we might get a glimpse of who could be in the next Smash.

I don't know who would best fit into BotW though. Zant sticks in my mind as a 'Twilight' world would be easy enough to implement.

Ghirahim has potential as I can see him fitting in in terms of art style. Maybe Calamity Ganon infects the Master Sword somehow.

From there, I can only imagine Vaati or Shadow Ganon somehow making an impact... but it's becoming more and more unlikely now.

I was kinda disappointed in BotW to see Impa's age. I was more disappointed when she was not included in a memory, so we have no idea what she would even look like. I can't see a Skyward Sword Impa appearing in Smash now. That game is too far gone.

I think if anyone is on Sakurai's radar, it'd be a Toon character. Toon Zelda is never off the table IMO.

What if we got Midna riding Wolf Link.

That way we have a brand new Zelda character in Midna while at the same time still technically having all the playable Zelda characters be alternate versions of the big 3.:smash:

It's like a loophole. I don't mind the idea, but I'd prefer her just floating around on her own.

Also your signature is really nice.

I prefer the idea of Midna and Wolf Link as a team. Like a more badass version of Duck Hunt Duo.

Wolf Link can have the tilts and less powerful attacks and Midna can Smash and grab.

I'm less concerned about adding multiple versions of the same character. To me, it's better than adding random, weakly created characters with little personalities outside of cliches.

I'd happily have Link, Toon Link, Wolf Link and Midna and Wild Link as long as the only semi-clones are Link and Tink.

Same as how I'd be fine with Mario, Dr. Mario, Paper Mario and Classic Mario as long and Mario and the Doc are the only clones.

Speaking of Breath of the Wild, one of the champions could always be an Assist Trophy.

If you release Daruk, he'll activate Daruk's Protection, which protects you from all attacks for a while. It even shields the player against unblockable attacks, but it will break upon taking 50% damage, and is also affected by shield damage.

If anything, I think Breath of the Wild finally gave Moblin Ganon a good Final Smash material with calamity beast Ganon, as that form was basically treated as a form that was a step above Ganon's moblin form story wise.

Zelda and Ganondorf should be scrapped and remade as if they were new characters to the series. Zelda was 'half of a fighting strategy' that lost its other half in Smash 4. And Ganondorf is based on a pilot.

Link can have his Breath of Wild look and adopt a few moves and behavior from his newest game. Which would then have the indirect effect of making Toon Link less of a semi-clone.

I'm still not fond of the idea of completely scrapping Zelda's moveset. Her specials have the potential to be pretty viable and most of her moveset just needs slight tweaking or different mechanics. There's only a couple of moves I feel need to be completely remade.

Ganondorf however is a completely different story altogether.

Darunia is still my favorite choice for a new Zelda fighter.

I don't care how irrelevant he is, I want him in Smash. :p

Part of me wishes they'd have Characters with multiple movesets as semi-clones. Like Peach in the Cat Suit or Breath of the Wild Link or Mega Man with a different set of Robot Master weapons.

Rivals of Aether has a character that uses a similar moveset to Zelda iirc, so it CAN work, the developers just need to remember not to neglect her again and rework her a lot

I just saw an article that said some games appeared on Best Buy Canada's listings that are unannounced, and for the Switch. Super Smash Bros was one of them. I don't know though. Have listings ever been telling beforehand? I'd be thrilled, but I am skeptical.

The other games are Pikmin World and Dragon Quest XI (which was previously announced. My bad.)

We already know an actual Pikmin is in the works. We just haven't heard of it in forever. Perhaps if this listing is true, Pikmin World is that game?

And a Smash for Switch is too obvious not to happen because of how successful the franchise is.

If it's a fake, whoever did that listing was playing it safely.

The listing apparently appeared on the website. I don't think it was a fabricated, fake leak type of thing.

That being said, when games appear on a listing it means they are either going to be released soon, or can be preordered.

It just seems too good to be true. I'll remain skeptical, and stand by my saying that Smash won't be at E3.

Oh, how I wish to be wrong.

The listsings are from january, so it isnt like it's new information best buy just got.

it's possible that they actually knew it by then, but it might have just been putting placeholders for rumored games.

I never believe listings, there's been so many wrong ones in the past, they don't even seem worth mentioning anymore.

Anyway SG has a video up on their theory that Sakurai is working on the new Kirby fighting game.

https://youtu.be/SteF9aZ6I-w

Any thoughts?

Probably fake, but if it's real get hype and Best Buy Canada is getting a visit from the Nintendo ninjas.
The picture is very small so I can't see the bottom. I'm hoping this is a joke?

Best Buy really did put up placeholders preemptively, so I'm inclined to believe the image is "real", but whether it actually corresponds to an impending announcement is yet to be seen.

Oh my goodness! I seriously hope we are getting a new Smash game.

SSB4 Switch (3DS + Wii U + DLC in one tiny game cartridge) or SSB5 would make me hyped!

I'd honestly settle for just an announcement even without a trailer. Just confirmation that Smash 5 is in the works.

I'd rather that than a port tbh. I'm a bit over SSB4.

I'd rather a port than a new title. SSB4 didn't have a long enough chance to shine like it's other sibling games.

Also, even though there were placeholders back in January, I thought this was as a different story.

From what I understand. They had images up on the E3 2017 page of the Best Buy website, and they took them down, and they have since been changed to "To be announced at E3".

Thanks to your signature, I'm just imagining Peach body slamming them.

IMO, these could all be things made as a What if so Best buy is prepared if it happens.

They did a similar thing to that for Smash 4 (and I think Brawl too. At least, Sakurai wasn't aware) I think we'd probably most likely get that if we are getting a new game...
