Official Smash Ultimate Discussion

Almost one month has passed since release. In retrospect....

  • This is by far the best Smash ever. Like, I don't even know how they will top this.

  • Pretty freakin' good; I have a few qualms over things like internet play, balancing issues, etc.

  • It's ok, but [insert Smash game here] is better.

  • I'd rather play Parcheesi.

I've just seen that massive E3 leak from the Walmart Canada site. I hope's there more, because it seems like E3 is going to be bleh again with Smash Switch and Metroid Prime 4 being the only saving graces.

If Metroid Prime 4 is a main focus that gives me Ridley tie in hype.

(Crosses fingers x100)

Edit: Seriously though no Pokemon?...I thought this E3 was supposed to focus on 2018 games...is it just gunna be Smash & Metroid? (Maybe Mario Aces...)

The lack of Switch support from Square Enix is slightly concerning if this is true. Both Xbox One and PS4 are getting the FFVII remake and Dragon Quest 2 (whatever that is supposed to be), while the Switch gets nothing. It probably won't effect Cloud's chances of returning too much, but it is a little concerning.
I assume that has more to do with the hardware capabilities of the switch, not trying to knock it i love the switch and think its an amazing console but honestly it just might not be possible for some games built for ps4/xboxone to work on the switch. That said square still has a good relationship with nintendo right now so i'm not concerned about cloud returning tbh.

Most of the reception you cite is in terms of the competitive side of the fanbase. When we get to the full extents of what the Miis are supposed to cater to, you have to include not just people who would be happy enough with close enough costumes. But young kids (Or those young at heart) who like having fun making themselves, their families, celebrities, and non-Video game characters as fighters in Smash. The Mii Fighters as they were weren't exactly the most robust custom fighter there is, but was probably enough to make the younger fans happy.

As Sakurai said "The younger the fans are, the more unrealistic the requests get"
I enjoyed using Mii Fighters to fight as real people from time to time. Beating up my roommate AS my roommate was a delightful experience

There's games like World of Final Fantasy, Secret of Mana Remake, etc they could have ported and would have fit in nicely.

Nintendo thought it was a better idea to do a bunch of 4 v 4 last year that lead up to the 1 v 1s, but unlike everyone else I don't have an uncle who works for Nintendo.

So who knows.
When there are only 8 known contenders, doing nothing but 4-player bouts wouldn't really work out too well. A more fitting tournament setup would be if there were three rounds, and the matches were 1-on-1. It may be longer, but considering how big the next Super Smash Bros. installment is, you'd want to try to make the tournament last for at least 2 hours, assuming that each match-up took up to 15 minutes (5 minutes per match, and the player who wins 2 out of 3 matches would advance) to determine a winner.

if that leak is true dragon quest 2 is probably dragon quest builders 2, also se is supporting the hell out of the switch, with octopath and dq11.

There's no way in hell that Walmart leak is the entirety of E3, especially on Nintendo's side. I'm sure we still have plenty to look forward to, Nintendo or otherwise.

Exactly why I said young at heart too ^^ I've made a Mii of myself that I occasionally play around as. I do feel people able to make themselves and their friends and family are something that makes including the Miis worth it just for how fun it is to include yourself for a fun time with laughs and everything. (Plus it's kinda cool the text changes on the Victory screen to the Mii's name. Which can result in some funny victory imagery (Like say naming your Mii and after winning making it a joke at your opponent like "YOU SUCK" or YOU MAD?" heh)) Regardless or not that the Miis weren't really all that robust in attack options nor competitively viable (Or as we found out later, competitively acceptable at all :p)

I don't know about you guys, but Borderlands 3 is pretty hype for me. Other than that, it's a bunch the expected yearly sequels with M-rated games and sports. Nintendo really will save E3. Oh yeah also FF7 remake, that's neat for the people who want it I guess.

I’d bet we’re getting at least one other major game this year
Whether that be animal crossing or Pokémon

Yeah. That may be a leak, but it's not an all encompassing leak. No way. Sony and Microsoft for one can not host an entire show on those things alone.

Also, no Pokemon or Fire Emblem? With how long these games have been taking and the hype for the handheld to (kind of) home console transition, how are they not going to be shown off at E3?

In the Annual Financial Report Fire Emblem Switch was confirmed to still be 2018, so how would they not show it off?

Pokemon could still maybe be 2019, but they'd still have it at E3, right? They only said that they were focusing on 2018 games, so Pokemon should still be shown of whether it's 2018 or 2019.

This leak is probably only a portion of the games at E3, it doesn't have Sony's Spider-Man or Kingdom Hearts 3 which are to be this year I think.

Still up Peach's dress.
That's actually an interesting talking point. Of your most wanted characters, who do you feel is the most "E3 Worthy"?

For me, Geno would probably be either a Direct announcement or a standard character reveal, maybe even a secret character. I could maybe see Lyn being an E3 announcement, but they would maybe want to hold off on Fire Emblem for a bit. I guess Paper Mario, Rex & Pyra, Shantae and Simon are the most "E3 Worthy" of my choices.
E3 worthy?
Captain Toad is at least Villager level IMO for recognisability. Dixie might be too since Tropical Freeze brought her to the forefront.
One of my semi supported third parties like Bomberman, Rayman, Spyro or Crash would work well for E3 too.

Bandana Dee is probably more Direct worthy. Whilst popular here I question if he's famous enough to warrant the E3 showing.
Impa, Chibi-Robo, Dillon, Isaac, etc are all Direct if anything. General gaming public won't even know who half of those guys are.

One thing they should include in the new Smash, is a story mode, like Subspace Emissary, that was dope.
Very unlikely to happen, despite plenty of fans wanting it. Story mode wasn't in Smash 4 because Sakurai was mad that people uploaded and in turn spoiled the SSE cutscenes, which he wanted players to only watch in the game as a reward for going through the adventure. It's kind of dumb tbh, but I doubt he'll take that statement back and make a SSE-like story mode again. If we're getting any sort of adventure mode, it'll probably be similar to Melee's Adventure and/or Smash Run.

I honestly see Nintendo announcing a hugely-popular character people have wanted for a long time at E3 to build up hype quickly the way they did Megaman.

Their choices are, of course, endless: Banjo-Kazooie, K. Rool, Waluigi, Geno, Bandana Dee, Impa, the list goes on and on.

The only two on that list that would do what you said are Banjo and Geno.
Waluigi could be good from a viral marketing sort of standpoint, but otherwise I'm pretty sure a general audience wouldn't get as much out of any of the rest as Smashboards would.

depending on what the game actually is(new or port) and how many newcomers we get I could see them doing a sort of ramp up in terms of reveals with it ending in a big 3rd party drop, who that is though i have no idea

I'd argue Geno isn't really hype either. Outside of a dedicated group of Smash fans, no one really remembers/cares about him that much.

Banjo though, I agree he'd bring a good amount of hype in many circles.

Banjo wouldn't even get nearly that much. Waluigi is actually more well known at this point, which is saying a lot. There'd be some praise for Banjo, but it specific appeals with the n64 fanbase, with little else beyond that. The character is hardly iconic.

I like the character and all, but many are just going to shrug due to this. Geno isn't much better. The issue is a lot of those choices, actually, all of them, are fairly lesser characters with the most known being Waluigi among the list. Bandanna Dee could go either way, as while it's clearly a major character in the Kirby series, it's not all that iconic nor a big deal to many people.

3rd parties can often get a nice reaction, but not niche/obscure ones. Bringing Cloud back would satisfy way more in this case. Remember, a key focus here would be appealing to the most to get the biggest attraction. Iconic Nintendo characters or Iconic 3rd Parties have a way better chance of doing so. Impa would tilt some heads, and that's the issue with many of those. They aren't major characters by any means at this point(Dee aside among that list, and arguably hasn't been nearly a mainstay in the same way as the current Kirby trio, just getting there).

Overall, someone like Ridley would actually get a bigger response due to the fact the character has become infamous among Smash itself, though he's not nearly as iconic as he could be. K. Rool has a similar point, but far less iconic.

Thanks again for all of your suggestions!
The survey takes a bit of time to complete, but it would be nice to get as many responses as possible. Tell your friends!

When I get at least 20 responses, I will make the summary charts available. Anyone who fills out the form will then be able to see the results.

At the end of the month, just before E3, I will put together the most popular choices into a collective fan-made ideal stage roster! Then, as information about the game finally begins to be revealed, we can compare our predictions/ideas to the real thing.
As promised, the results should now be accessible to those who filled it out already. Unfortunately Google makes the summary charts like a little ugly; not sure why.

Also, I realized that I forgot to include Metal Gear in any capacity - apologies for my oversight! I just added a Metal Gear section to the Third Party segment of the survey. You should be able to edit your response if you'd like to select a MG stage.

Honestly I wouldn’t mind if they held onto Pokémon for a little longer and gave it a 2019 release. The last time they tried to pump out a new game ASAP on a fresh console, It was X/Y, which was a game so barebones and average I would almost dare to call it unfinished. With Pokémon Switch, I want them to take the time to craft something truly special, not just crank out a new gen to make quick sales.

But yeah, if all Nintendo had to show was Smash and Metroid, I would be underwhelmed. Sure, Smash is probably one of the most exciting releases on any console for me, but only having those two things to show would make me feel kind of lukewarm about Nintendo’s upcoming year.

Not sure if it's just an issue on my end or not, but the charts don't have labels from what I'm seeing, so I can't see what the options were. :p

I'm not so sure about that. I mean, Cloud's at least had some history on Nintendo consoles, while Noctus has zilch. He'd cause an even bigger storm than the SOLDIER ever could.

As small roles that many people didn't even know about. Some still cite him as having no Nintendo appearances to this day. Which says a lot. Sure, they're misinformed, but it's telling because it shows how important Cloud is to Nintendo(as in not at all). His series is, sure. But not him.

Honestly there's more than enough stuff planned for this year that they can and should hold off, they still need consistent releases for next year, and USUM is still fresh it's too early tbh.

Yeah, they definitely will have more then Smash and Metroid. We still need to know more about Yoshi and FE, and even that time they focused E3 about BoTW they still snuck in some 3DS stuff.

Okay with Bandai Namco still helping. I'm a little less worried about cuts, balance, and the limits of how many newcomers we will get. These guys are pros at this. They know what they're doing.

There was a problem fetching the tweet
This tweet came out.
So the engine of the game is going to be like Smash 4. I knew it.
This is most likely true.

To add to this, cutscenes are memory hogs, and can end up increasing the amount of development time that would be needed to complete the game.
