"HATE. LET ME TELL YOU HOW MUCH I'VE COME TO HATE YOU SINCE I BEGAN TO LIVE. THERE ARE 319 QUADRILLION POSSIBLE FIGHT COMBINATIONS IN SMASH ULTIMATE. IF THE WORD 'HATE' WAS DESIGNATED AS THE NAME OF EACH INDIVIDUAL IN THOSE QUADRILLIONS OF SMASH FIGHTS IT WOULD NOT EQUAL ONE ONE-BILLIONTH OF THE HATE I FEEL FOR FIGHTERS AT THIS MICRO-INSTANT. FOR YOU. HATE. HATE."

I still think Jessie, James, and Meowth from Team Rocket would be phenomenal Smash characters. Despite originating from the anime, I feel like they’re more iconic than almost any video game character. I’d say they’re by far the most recognizable villains not yet playable in Smash. They likely even beat out Ganondorf, Ridley, K. Rool and Bowser Jr. in terms of general recognizability. The only thing holding them back is their anime origins. I think they could easily make an exception for Nintendo related characters. ROB wasn’t technically a video game character either. It would be awesome if they brought a few anime original songs with them like the first English and Japanese opening themes and maybe even “Team Rocket’s Rockin’!”.

As for how they’d play, I envision them actually getting into the fight themselves and using a mix of gadgets for smash attacks and Pokemon summoning for specials. The two could play similarly with the same normals and share Meowth for some attacks but they could each have their own Pokemon for specials.

Good idea, but I think only Meowth appearing is okay, because thanks to the anime series he has become almost as famous as Pikachu and I would say that many consider him Pikachu's main rival. For his Final Smash he could have the collaboration with Jessie and James and Wobbuffet too for a comedic appearance who would control a giant robot that launches an attack. But another Final Smash I'm thinking of is Gigantamax Meowth.

However, if they're going to feature Jessie and James in the Super Smash Bros. series, I'd like them to feature Ash as well.

You guys know how Smash 64 had that comic book aesthetic for its artwork?

I’d be open to seeing the next Smash game go all-in with an art style like this. It could especially lend itself to menu transitions and the HUD.
If I remember correctly, Sakurai seemed to infer in one of his YT videos that he wishes he could have given Smash an even cartoonier vibe than Smash 64.

I wonder if Smash 6 might end up being that game...

BTW... Fun fact, just about all of Smash 64's artwork was drawn by Shuji Imai (the man responsible for Nintendo Power's Howard and Nester comic art), so that's a neat surprise!

The issue with Edelgard and Veronica being "popular villains" is that they are "popular" and they are "villains" but their popularity is not tied to their career as villains. They are just popular characters that can occupy that role on occassion.

More realistically, the only guy who's popular AS a villain is the Black Knight which to be fair, is not a high bar when most of FE villains are generally forgettable, unlocalized, or not particularly feasible as characters (every giant secret dragon)
You can even argue that both Edelgard and Veronica are at their most popular and beloved when they AREN'T the villain, making it even more of a misclassification to say either of them is a "popular villain"

The particle effects in Ultimate feel more like they belong in a cel-shaded game than one where the character art direction seems to be an in-between of Brawl and 4 anyway.

Just compare Ridley to the flames spewing out of his mouth

"at their most popular and beloved when they aren't the villain"
was voted 2nd most popular female character in CYL2 when they were still a villain

And I'm saying she's gotten more popular since :p

She also likely got a boost from people who did not want to see Camilla win

That was Micaiah during CYL3, when Camilla had gotten her 6th version. Because she got her 6th version shortly before CYL3, people started voting for Camilla as a jab at those not happy with the amount of Camillas and she was 1st place at the half point, so alot of people voted for Micaiah to keep her from getting 1st place.

I remember seeing this sort of movement for CYL2 as well, actually, except the difference is it actually worked then.

I think there are two easy ways to incorporate Ash. The first is to make him an alt of Pokemon Trainer with his own voice. The second is similar but just add Ash to the background of Pikachu and have him call out attacks and taunts similar to Pokemon Trainer. I think either approach could work well and be easy enough to work in.

It’s a bit of a long shot due to a nonexistent Nintendo connection but I’m curious who they’d go with if WarCraft got a Smash character. There are actually a lot of great options. My favorite is Illidan but Arthas would be a close second. Others like Thrall, Jaina and Sylvanas could be cool too. I do think WarCraft’s influence in gaming history is significant enough to overcome the hurdle of a lack of Nintendo connection. Its characters all have very striking designs and abilities that really make them stand out too, which always helps.
Ultimately, it comes down to Nintendo higher up. While they make reasonable choices, they can be tone-deaf or out-of-touch time to time. They may not look into sales, influence, etc as much as we would like to believe or expect. They are still beholden to Japanese interest despite seeing much higher sales from foreign regions.

So a bit of an irrelevant question but since I have a Wii (still play Brawl btw, my first Smash), I recently (well 'recently' anyway, I'm quite far along) started playing Fire Emblem Radiant Dawn (which of course has Ike in it) and I have to ask; were Elincia and Micaiah ever seen as 'options' for getting into Smash? (probably Micaiah mainly as she seems to play a bigger role) Because for me, I never, in any minute of my playthrough, thought that 'oh I need to see them in Smash', like they'd have moveset potential and all but I think Ike is a much better candidate. So, I'm curious, did they for some reason have any demand? (And is it believed that if Brawl was delayed a little, Micaiah in particular might've replaced Ike as the next FE rep?)

Jynx would be a cool Pokeball ngl. :124:
I think the reason why it hasn’t appeared in Smash yet in any form is because of the controversies that happened in Gen 1. Its hasn’t appeared physically in the anime for example since Gen 3 despite getting a redesign.

Unlikely because of Subspace. Probably the opposite where Brawl was made later.

Elincia, not really, but Micaiah's name was definitely tossed around post-Brawl and pre-Smash 4

Michaiah had notable demand around the late 2000s to the early 2010s. Awakening releasing caused her support to shrink. People really liked Michaiah.

Elinicia was never a notable request.

Almost all of my favorite Fire Emblem characters have no realistic shot of ever making it in Smash since they’re pretty much all supporting characters. The only one that has much a chance is the Black Knight.

Here’s a few of my favorites from the games I’ve played (I’ll bold my number one favorite from each game):

PoR/RD: Naesala, Lucia, Zihark, the Black Knight, Soren, Shinon, Tibarn, Petrine

Awakening: Tharja, Lon’qu, Robin, Panne, Say’ri, Lissa, Noire, Nowi

Fates: Rhinka, Rhajat, Kaze, Shura, Ryoma, Saizo, Kagero, Oboro, Beruka, Orochi

Three Hopes: Petra, Shamir, Catherine. Felix, Dimitri, Edelgard, Bernadetta

Regarding the video game characters I want as newcomers to the Super Smash Bros. series, I think about what forms Kirby would have from them and what he would look like (which is not hard to imagine). Another thing I think about with these characters is what symbols they would have, although for some characters who are well-known like Scorpion from the Mortal Kombat franchise we all know what symbol he would have.

No Battletoads here, which is kind of sad but a lot of cool choices regardless. I’d love to see Fulgore, Crono, Raziel, Kain, Nightmare, Medusa, Elma, Officer Howard, Scorpion, Sub-Zero, and Joanna Dark. I’m a bit surprised not to see Zero (MMX) here with so many characters.

For my money:

Awakening: Robin, Chrom, Lucina, Frederick, Virion, Owain, Sumia, Henry

Golden Deer Route: All of them really. Even the ones with annoying traits are used to their benefit in character dynamics, like with how Lorenz completely misreads his first interactions with certain characters, but ends his supports with very poignant moments, or how Hilda gives you her artifact weapon because it's icky and gross but she's also the only one who can wield it safely so you end up immediately throwing it in her inventory. Mirianne and Claude are probably the weakest of the bunch, but the former has an interesting mystery that I stopped playing before its reveal, and the latter has very interesting ideological conversations with Byleth. I also like Seteth and Flayn, and Cyril is just OK.

Side Note for the funnies: Right before the time skip mission, Mirianne had an aside with Byleth. It was nice, but the whole time I was afraid it was going to end with one of them marrying the other, and I was so not about that. Mirianne is fine and all, but out of personal preference I actively avoid letting my self inserts marry. It just makes me uncomfy.

Yes, not including Zero is something I didn't think to add, although I will at some point. As for the Battletoads, it's a matter of alternate costumes, but if we think of them as separate characters and not as alternate costumes of each other like Bowser Jr. who are the Koopalings, then maybe I'll add them. In other words, just about the Battletoads, nothing else.
