Who even are the villians of the new DK games? I honestly don't know. I don't even play DK games but I've known about K. Rool since I was a kid and thought he'd be cool in Smash since Melee. It's not a big deal to me personally, but K. Rool absolutely deserves to be in. He's not a throwaway slot, especially when you consider Nintendo's willing to scrape as far down as Bowser Jr. and Dr. Mario when it comes to putting Mario characters in the game. DKC was huge in the 90's.
I never said K. Rool doesn't deserve a slot, I just think people over estimate his popularity and overrate his merits, saying he deserves a place more than any other character.
I think, realistically, he will get in regardless at some point. If not as DLC, then in a future Smash game.
I also never said the new DK villains are amazing (though I much prefer the Snowmads to the Kremlings). I honestly don't think villains are the strong point of Donkey Kong games. It's hard to give a character like Donkey Kong a thrilling and engaging rivalry when his entire characterisation is "dumb ape who loves bananas". Literally anyone can fill the role. Mario is the best rival for him at this point.
Where do you get this notion I'm claiming the game sold because of K. Rool? No, K. Rool became popular because the game sold. People loved his characterization throughout the different games. And frankly K. Rool's bosses were some of the best bosses in every game, especially the first one, where K. Rool's boss battle was really the only good one.
You implied it by randomly mentioning how much DKC sold without connecting it to the character.
I have never seen anyone mention K. Rool even once outside of the Smash community. If he was popular, I would hear people talking about him outside of the context of Smash very often.
I once again bring Rosalina in as an example - she didn't have much of a following for Smash specifically. But she's undoubtedly one of Nintendo's most popular characters over the last (almost) decade, and people just want to see her in more games period. She gets fanart out the wazoo, she even got a lot of Miiverse fanart before Smash, she was the most used character in MK8 by far and still remains very heavily used about as much as the DLC characters, there was a noticeable backlash when she wasn't in Galaxy 2 as a main character, and Nintendo have outright said she's in 3D World because she's so popular. And as Smash specific fans seem to forget, Smash is a game made for Nintendo fans. So even if people didn't really campaign for her to be in Smash specifically, her popularity was obvious, so it would have influenced her inclusion. Anyone who had been following the Nintendo fanbase would have put her on their prediction list. Problem is, Smash speculators focus on Smash specific communities, which is why they always miss the mark.
If K. Rool was like that, he would be a strong contender as a popular character. But I literally NEVER hear people talk about him UNLESS it's to do with Smash. If he was as popular as you say, I would be hearing about him all of the time, with people talking about how cool a character he is or how fun he was to fight or what they'd like to see done with him. But I don't, and I think many people feel the same way.
K. Rool is not Ridley 2.0. With Ridley, there were hardly any facts for him and many against, but mainly emotion. Plus, the K. Rool community is much bigger due to the fact that he is more realistic at this point, and K. Rool had facts for him rather than the emotion that backed Ridley's support. K. Rool is incredibly popular among so many people and is the rep DK has been waiting for and deserves. Just that fact that he has a huge support group that is also very vocal support him enourmously. Like I said before, only the vocal people count at this point because no matter how large the community is for a character, if only a small number vote, that character will not have a good chance while K. Rool has the best of both worlds with a large vocal community.
By "vocal people" I mean the people talking on forums. People who go on about the character repeatedly. They don't encompass all ballot voters.
And define "huge", because I haven't noticed a particularly huge K. Rool fanbase.
I don't get why voting for a character we like makes us stuck in the 90's....
Everyone's allowed to have an opinion and want a character for this game. The popularity for Ridley was undeniable, and it's the same for K. Rool.
Besides, who do you want? Isaac or something? What gives you the right to say that we all don't have any other picks for DLC? That's generalization imo.
Now you're putting words in my mouth.
I never said it isn't OK to vote for the character you want, but the fact is many K. Rool voters don't even care about the character. Certain communities like Smashboards try to have a "council" of sorts that dictate what characters should be voted for, and characters like K. Rool are often favoured because they have seniority.
There are people who genuinely like K. Rool, but many people who vote for him don't care about him much. They couldn't passionately write me essays on why they love the character or explain his merits. They vote for him because "lol so retro". Many Smash fans don't play modern Nintendo games, so they only care about characters from the 90's or earlier getting in, since those are the only Nintendo characters they have any memory of.
