S Sunny-Zee hahaha I made it/showed it on this very thread back around Ultimate's release :D

But there you go, taken just now with my girl Daisy next to her :D

(Forgive the pitiful quality of the pictures since I have the bad habbit of dropping my phones which ultimately leads to harming the cameras x) )

Taking these pics made me realise I forgot to remove the symbol of the original driver of the kart xD
That is so cool. Nice work!

I already found another YouTuber with a list, but thanks, that was thoughtful.
I mainly posted that so you wouldn't have to fool with youtube since that's Jake Kaufman's own bandcamp page. You can even download the whole album for free! (Though, I'd throw in a few dollars to be generous, personally.)
I don't know why the original GBC soundtrack isn't on there, though. I swear I downloaded it from Kaufman's bandcamp a long time ago.

I see you have three of my most wanted: Chun-Li, Viewtiful Joe, and of course, Shantae. Great picks, mate.

Also, where did you find that Chun-Li render?
It's her Street Fighter V render. I just found it on her Street Fighter wiki page.

https://streetfighter.fandom.com/wiki/Chun-Li

Let's hope we get at least one of our most wanted characters in the game!

A little different from our normal Shantae Fanart, here is a Rottytops in a kimono fanart!

There was a problem fetching the tweet

It got lost in the reformatting of Bandcamp At least that's what I know of it. And unfortunately, the vinyl has made the chance of obtaining the WAV files legally unlikely. Then again, it's pretty grey sharing music files to and fro without the creator/publisher's permission.

I'm of the mentality that something is better than nothing. If you can't have Shantae having kinda/sorta Shantae isn't that bad.
I agree.

While it would suck that Shantae couldn't be a fighter in such a case, I'd take a MII Costume over nothing.
Especially if the costume has the same quality as the Sans and Cuphead costumes.

It's not the end of the world.
It'd just be too bad.

Just ignore all the drama and needless negativity. ;)

I do agree on that, though wasn't Sans and Cuphead successful because they had relatively static faces that translates very well into a mask? Not to say anything negative of them or their design, but Sans rarely changes his expression, only doing so a select few times. Though for Cuphead, that may be an oddity, though I think it's more to reflect the popularity of his 30's cartoon smile. I don't wholly believe a Shantae mask can do something similar to something that Sans and Cuphead can do. That being said, I'd love to see a Shantae wig if we get something related to Shantae that isn't a fighter.

For me it's either playable Shantae or no Shantae at all.

As someone who hates mii faces, I personally would not be satisfied with a Mii costume of Shantae. No matter how good the hair model looked, it will look off when it's right next to that clumsy, generic Mii Face. Also the build of the Mii fighter bodies wouldn't be well suited for Shanta's more petite frame.

Sans and Cuphead both work for me because they actually look like themselves and the fact that they are a mii is unrecognizable. Instead of looking like a Mii wearing a costume, they look like themselves. Sadly something like that wouldn't be achievable for Shantae with out making a fully modeled head that instead of fitting over a mii head, replaced it so that it wouldn't need to be oversized.

That Rottytops is definitely going to have back problems later.
How would she even be able to feel that? She’s (un)dead. :4pacman: I mean, it might weigh her down a bit, and the only “back breaking” might be in a more literal cartoon zombie sense, but you know how the internet is: “Buxom is Better.” ;)

So 2 months ago or so, a retro game store opened up. And there... they have a physical copy of shantae for GBC, with the box I think. They were selling it for 300 bucks or more though. If I had the money I would so grab it...

I'm trying to get into this series - would Shantae and the Pirate's Curse be a good place to start? I'm on a bit of a Metroidvania kick (I'm under the impression that the Shantae games are Metroidvanias; correct me if I'm wrong), and I got that game for the Wii U through Humble Bundle.

It's considered to be the best game in the series and is where I got my start, but there is story stuff that occurred in the previous game that has an impact on Pirate's Curse. If you start with Pirates Curse, it is probably a good idea to read up on what happened, but that shouldn't take too long.

Heres the order i tell most people to play them.

Pirates Curse

Half Genie Hero

Riskys Revenge

Then Shantae GBC

In all honestly GBC and Risky's Revenge havn't aged well. so only play them if you end up loving the other 2 games.

I wish I would, but I live far away from NJ. I also doubt they'd still have it now, even if I get a chance to drop by there.

Most Shantae fans will tell you to start with Pirate's Curse since that's the franchise favorite right now. It's like the OoT of the series really. High pedestal.

In all honesty, each game has good, varied reasons to be picked first. Though I say the original GBC or half genie hero are better to start with. It doesnt make sense to me to start with the "best" of the series and then basically tell newcomers "it goes down hill after there". They all are solid games, all have their own flaws as well.

The next game Seven Sirens, will be coming out in a few months, that would also provide a fine place to start since the games usually are stand alone.

Really it's just a matter of accessibility. Go with the game you can get easiest. You said Wii U. Both Pirates Curse and Half Genie Hero were released on that. Pick from there. If that happens to be Pirate's Curse than cool. If Half Genie Hero, awesome. Either way, welcome to the caravan. Hope you stick around.

$300 Bucks is a lot of dough. But it doesn't sound half bad if we are talking about a good condition CIB GBC Shantae. I've seen CIB copies go for much more than that on Ebay and other auction sites.

Pirate's Curse was the first Shantae game I played and I consider it to be the best one in the series. I recommend trying it out first. ;)

It's funny you say that because that's the exact order I played all the games. Or at least 3 of them. I never played the original GBC one before.

I honestly don't understand why everyone says, you should start with Pirate's Curse.
It makes much more sense to play them in order to me.

The original Shantae on the GBC is available on the 3DS.
Risky's Revenge is DSIWare and got a Steam release too.
Pirate's Curse... Everybody said it already.
And Half-Genie Hero is straight up the most accessible game in the series.

Again, I suggest you play them in order.
And when you're through with them, form your own opinion. ;)

I'd personally recommend starting with the GBC. The main thing is that it's not going to be automatically awesome just because it's an obscure GBC game. It's sort of like the Holographic Charizard cards or Action 52 cardridges: they're both obscure, expensive items, but they're ultimately overshadowed by their own notoriety. The Completionist said it best: play it, but it's not necessary to complete it if it's not your cup of tea. After that, then I'd recommend HGH or PC. Most of Risky's Revenge was explained fairly casually in PC.
The worst part is that the GBC game is excessively rare for GBC, though if you have a Nintendo 3DS handy, then it'd only be $10 instead of $60 for a repo cart, or the $300+ for the genuine article.

A word of warning, if you don't know what you're doing, then the game can take a long time to complete, around the time frame of maybe eight hours in the upper area? The games are fairly short, but there's a bit of backtracking and unless you can find warp squids, traveling will be the most tedious part of the game.

Here's a question for you guys: if we knew there were going to be one slot in Fighters Pass 2 reserved for an Indie Fighter, who would Shanatae's main competition be?

I find this hard to judge, because it's hard to judge relative prominence of indie characters in general. Shovel Knight and The Knight of Hollow Knight seem like the obvious ones, but AT status for Shovel Knight does make him seem significantly less likely, and as others have said, The Knight seems like a stronger candidate for a Mii Swordfighter costume than for a full fighter (not that he wouldn't be awesome as such).

I think a Shantae Mii costume is unlikely simply on the basis that it's hard to imagine that not looking terrible on a Mii. Since DLC Assist Trophies don't seem to be a thing, I don't think she'll get representation in that way either. Hopefully those factors nudge her more towards playable fighter territory...

Start with the original. It's like 5 bucks on the 3DS eshop, so assuming you have a 3DS, it's low investment to give it a try. I don't think it's aged nearly as poorly as some people claim, but I'm also very used to retro games. If you do find it's a little too retro for your tastes, then you can always drop it and skip to Pirate's Curse. The original is my favorite in the series though, and besides that, I personally find that I appreciate any new series more when I start with earlier entries and work my way forward.

We should tweet Shantae to Nintendo to get the message across how much she is wanted.
I don't think there is anything inherently wrong or annoying about doing this, but probably still inadvisable just on the grounds that Sakurai has asked a couple times for people not to do this. Not really sure why he cares, but if it was important enough for him to say something about it, then we should probably respect that. Cool Shantae fanart is probably the best way to promote her. Too bad I can't draw anything more advanced than mediocre stick figures lol.

What was the character mentioned in that leak you referenced, by the way? If we don't have a thread-wide policy on how to handle leaker information, maybe we can just include these in clearly marked spoiler boxes? That way we can still protect people who don't want to see it, but that makes the information a lot more accessible for those who are curious, especially since tweets and posts about this stuff often get deleted.

Best to not get noticed by a lot of people. More on just getting a steady amount with support while not standing out like the Dante leak before Byleth appeared.

Also, a image made by someone about the fan rules that are broken. (Seriously, fan rules don't mean anything at this point with Sakurai on Super Smash Bros.)
Love that image. You could add Snake / Bayo for "no M rated games", Bayo / Joker for "no realistic guns", Bayo for "no sexually provocative characters" (you could fill an image like that up with just rules that Bayo broke tbh), Ryu for "no fighting game characters", and Cloud could fit next to Joker for the PlayStation consoles thing too.

Despite it's flaws, I still think the GBC Original is a solid game.
And I personally still think it's the best of them all.
But that doesn't say much, since there is not a single bad game in the series. ;)

Also, speaking of the GBC-original...
Is it just me, or did the series undergo a drastic change, from Risky's Revenge on?
No, I don't mean the obvious artstyle and system transition.

But rather the writing, different characters and music direction.

The very first Shantae game did have its humor and yet it didn't really go over the top.
And it's still the only game in the series with an arabian style soundtrack.

But then come Risky's Revenge and the humor went straight into ridiculous with the introduction of characters like the beloved Squid Baron and the writing going into that direction as well.
And the music doesn't really sound arabian anymore.
Maybe there are a few tracks that still have it, but overall, they lost their arabian vibe, which I find too bad.

I think it had something to do, with Shantae getting continuously roadblocked after the first game, due to Capcom not wanting to publish any more from WayForward and them not finding another publisher.
Only when the digital market became a thing, did Shantae finally have a resurgence as DSiWare, 8 years after the first game.

I wonder...
If the GBA-sequel wouldn't have been cancelled, if it would've been released and we would've gotten more Shantae game over the years...
Maybe we would've gotten a more gradual change over the years, instead of this abrupt change in focus from GBC to DSi.
But that may just be me...

They definitely changed things significantly after the original.

The biggest change to me is that they abandoned the dancing mechanic. Sure, Shantae dances to transform in later games, but the rhythm-based dance inputs never return.

My guess is that WayForward judged the dancing mechanic to be clunky and unnecessary. Locking core gameplay mechanics such as transformation and warping between locations behind a time-consuming, easy to mess up little minigame interrupts the gameplay too frequently. Simplifying the dancing to just holding down the button and selecting an effect lets you focus on the rest of the gameplay without the constant interruptions.

What they overlooked - at least in my opinion - is that the timed dancing is just really fun to do for some reason. I can't explain why, but I love timing Shantae's little dance moves to transform into different creatures, or seeing if I can remember and perform the whole sequence of moves for teleporting back to whatever town. Half the replay value of the game lies in the fact that those little dance sequences are so inexplicably satisfying to master and perform.

Shantae is still a great series, but I think it's a big loss that they lost faith in the dancing mechanic after the original. There are lots of great metroidvania series out there, but the dancing mechanic is really original, and it gives Shantae GBC a unique niche in a very crowded genre. Not to get too dramatic about it, but something essential about the soul of the Shantae series lies in that dancing mechanic. If they ever bring it back, I will be over the moon.

I like to think that in some alternate universe, WayForward doubled down on the dancing mechanic, and pushed themselves to find new and creative ways to build it into the gameplay. If only...

I think differences in the writing that you point out were probably mostly due to technical limitations on the GBC. Even if the sense of humor gets pretty cheesy sometimes, I think it's a positive change overall - the goofy writing is fun, and it's a nice fit with the Shantae universe. I'm with you on the music though. The original GBC tracks were so good, and the Arabian flavor works really well. The later entries have nice soundtracks too, but I would love to hear some remixed GBC soundtracks come back some day.

One of the thigns I like about the Shantae series though is that it has so much potential. They have shown with each game that there is a lot of room to mix up the classic formula and still arrive at a great game that fits in with the rest of the series. Even if I miss a lot of what made the original game special, the fact that there are so many good ideas in some of these earlier games just makes me all the more excited for the possibilities if they ever decide to revisit some of that material.

Or you know, they could turn the dancing into an actual minigame, as Seven Sirens is about to do.

Stuff like that only really works well in games with naturally slower pacing like RPGs, otherwise the rhythm aspect will invariably hijack whatever you're trying to do.

Actually, speaking of dancing mechanics, what if there was a way to switch between Auto-Dancing and Manual Dancing in-game? Like Auto-Dancing works similarly as it does in Half-Genie Hero, in that you can simply hold the dance button, then select an animal to transform into. Whereas when you use Manual Dancing, it works similarly to GBC Shantae's Dancing mechanic. While Auto-Dancing is used for the essential animal dances in-game, Manual Dancing is more used in puzzles and optional dances, either utility-based like healing/destroying or transforming into a secret creature (eg. a Tinkerbat), or the Auto-Dance works more like the Weapon Wheel in numerous games, where favorites are saved into the Weapon Wheel to use on-the-fly?

It could work in a diegetic way, where when a dance is used more often, Shantae can instantly tap into the magic more easily, though you could obviously move your personal favorites into the slots for easier access.

I'd use classic dancing as a taunt, giving slightly increased benefits to transformations compared to normal, but mainly just to rub your dancing skills in your opponent's face with how inefficient it is.

I might be in the great minority here, but I personally preferred the Transformation dances from the original game. It was basically their version of the ocarina songs from Ocarina of Time and Majora's Mask. I just loved that the ocarina was a tool you could use like you would in real life (I even used to look up how to play different songs on it like the Simpson's theme)

I can understand those who say it hurts the pacing of the game or whatever, but for me it made things more immersive. It felt like a ritual you needed to do to pull off something impressive. Like a wizard reciting a magical chant to perform a spell, or a DBZ character charging up before unleashing their attack.

They just made the game feel a bit more real because you actually had to do something to transform. And it made dancing part of Shantae's tool kit rather than the touch of character flavor that it is now.

I had no idea dancing in the original game worked like playing the ocarina in Zelda. That honestly sounds much better than holding a button and selecting from a constantly shifting list of inputs.

I spent the whole day making this. Hope you enjoy my sensible (and not so sensible) choices for Fighter Pass 2. I'll also be making a video using this.

Four words: Water Temple Water Levels. If the magic of using the ocarina hasn't thoroughly extinguished for you by the time you finish that dungeon, you have the patience of a saint. And though the ocarina remains an important tool in the following game, it's use is nonetheless cut down quite a bit. Then the Wind Waker had to go and make it essential for the simple act of steering.

It is very much possible to have too much of a good thing.
