Everyone keeps saying this, but I grew up in Mexico in the nineties and I never even heard of Terry. I knew there was a game called "King of Fighters," but it was nowhere near as popular as Street Fighter II or Mortal Kombat.I bunch of people in South America and Latin American countries in general absolutely knows who Terry is. SNK/Fatal Fury/King of Fighters was insanely popular in those regions.
Just because you didn't know about Terry that doesn't mean a lot of other people didn't. I believe you though that Street Fighter and Mortal Kombat are bigger than SNK in Latin America because those are bigger fighting game franchises in general.Everyone keeps saying this, but I grew up in Mexico in the nineties and I never even heard of Terry. That's actually normalThis might sound crazy to you but before Melee, I didn't know who Samus, Fox, Kirby, Ness, Captain Falcon, and ect was. Before Melee, the only BIG Nintendo franchises I knew about and played were Mario, Zelda, Pokemon, and DK. The Smash Bros. series introduced me too: Metroid, Star Fox, Kirby, Earthbound/Mother, F-Zero, Fire Emblem, ect. Playing Melee for the first time ever back in 2001 being introduced to all these awesome franchises I didn't know about was a surreal experience for me.
Metroid and Earthbound weren't really dead, they had games being developed, just circumstances prevented them from being released on the N64 for one reason or another. While I do admit to having zero knowledge of Metroid at the time of Melee, in hindsight there was a lot of Metroid stuff being revealed in 2002, just a bit too close to Melee's release to fully credit that game as the reason for Metroid's increase in popularity (incidentally you could also say it's the year where Ridley was truly born as a character). These days it would be more accurate to call the Mother series "retired", the creator had a vision and saw it through to it's completion. That's actually normalMetroid and Mother/Earthbound were all but dead franchises and Smash is credited with reviving interest in those, Fire Emblem had never been localized in the West, and F-Zero was alive but sales were dwindling. I'd say only Kirby and Star Fox had fairly recent success and you could have heard of them, though they were of course not on the same footing as the big Nintendo franchises.
Around Melee, yeah. At the time those characters were featured in the N64 version, they were largely Sakurai's whim. Mother/Earthbound wasn't really that big yet (Earthbound had bombed in the US and was not released in EU) and Super Metroid had bombed in JP and the franchise had largely been on hiatus when the first Smash released.Metroid and Earthbound weren't really dead, they had games being developed, just circumstances prevented them from being released on the N64 for one reason or another. You could say that pretty much every character in 64 was Sakurai's whim, Nintendo wasn't that vested in it's success until Melee. They wouldn't have lost sleep over Mario and Pikachu not being in an unproven IP.Around Melee, yeah. At the time those characters were featured in the N64 version, they were largely Sakurai's whim. That's true. I think at the time, almost nobody or at least a LOT of people in the west didn't know what the hell Fire Emblem was or who the hell Marth was.You could say that pretty much every character in 64 was Sakurai's whim, Nintendo wasn't that vested in it's success until Melee. There is no way the Metroid devs just pulled two whole games and a manga out of a hat in reaction to Melee's success. They were in development long before, and I don't consider a franchise dead until there is no more desire to make new entries, even if the relative lack of info and Internet at the time made it look that way.
The only real reaction to Melee was the decision to bring Fire Emblem overseas, some time later.
Meanwhile, the Medusa thread has been showing off and talking about model rips and modifications from Kid Icarus Uprising and Sm4sh 3DS, so while it’s going a little slow there as well, it’s also looking rather sedate with rumors and leaks being next to nonexistent.man it seems speculation is in a complete rut atm. Leakers have no idea whats going on, threads on this forum(not this one but others) seem to just keep spiralling into drama , and we have not a single thing to look towards to even have an idea when we may be told the next fighter. Some direct in Janurary is our best and most likely bet. But when? will they show and release the fighter the same day since they have said multiple times the fighter will be released in febuary at the latest? will we get a teaser for the next after this character? Will it just be third parties? Are spirits or AT possible?
I think it would be nice to know some sort of roadmap.
.... really? I have not been in there for awhile, but love medusa. What are they using the rips for?Meanwhile, the Medusa thread has been showing off and talking about model rips and modifications from Kid Icarus Uprising and Sm4sh 3DS, so while it’s going a little slow there as well, it’s also looking sedate with rumors and leaks being next to nonexistent.
Let’s see... having them be uploaded to VG-Resource, fixing textures and texture errors for them to be more presentable, saw that a BrawlEX Medusa mod was in development (ol’.... really? I have not been in there for awhile, but love medusa. What are they using the rips for?
Yeah just went through the 6 pages I missed in the 6 months I was gone or so. Love that Ara Ara one, and its cool people are still modding Brawl... is it possible to Mod Ultimate though with more characters?Let’s see... having them be uploaded to VG-Resource, fixing textures and texture errors for them to be more presentable, saw that a BrawlEX Medusa mod was in development (ol’Klaymoor even got into contact with the mod’s creator to pitch a couple of ideas), and
Dalek_Kolt went and made a freakin’ “Ara Ara” picture with Medusa,
, and
.
So yeah, we’ve been keeping busy as much as we could.![]()
So people are freaking out just because of this?man it seems speculation is in a complete rut atm. I don't know what to tell ya, man. I was there. I'm sure SNK games had plenty of fans, but they weren't a huge phenom.Just because you didn't know about Terry that doesn't mean a lot of other people didn't. I believe you though that Street Fighter and Mortal Kombat are bigger than SNK in Latin America because those are bigger fighting game franchises in general.
What algorithm, pray tell, do you know that can tell if a new IP will be successful or not?Understandable, since Nintendo never bothered bringing it outside of Japan at that time.
Thinking it'll bomb there.
But look at how things turned out in the end...
Oh well. it seems Nintendo is out of touch a decent amount of times.
King K, Rool anyone...?
As for Metroid:
I don't think it was really dead. I mean Super Metroid is an all-time classic.
I see no reason why it should die soon after.
If I'm not mistaken, the reason why the N64 had no Metroid, was because they simply couldn't make it work.
With the most pressing concern there being no development team that could properly do a Metroid game.
Thankfully though they found one by the time the Gamecube came around, with Retro Studios.
Fun fact: Back then, Retro Studios was also partly comprised of people that were once part of "Iguana Entertainment", the development team of the N64 Turok games.
At least as far as I know...
Do you enjoy being so confrontational or what? <_<What algorithm, pray tell, do you know that can tell if a new IP will be successful or not?
Because I don't see one, and even the best games can sell poorly or get overlooked due to a variety of factors. From what I can see, it seems Fire Emblem, while doing fairly well in the past, didn't exactly warrant the effort and risk to bring overseas, what with the large amount of translation needed and unforgiving gameplay that also kept The Lost Levels there.
And when they did bring it over... Well, it certainly gained a dedicated following, but it didn't exactly light the world on fire either. In fact, each following entry seemed to do worse than the last sales-wise. Radiant Dawn's performance was especially sad on the Wii; the likely reason was that it was just too hardcore for most of the Wii audience, a fate shared by Prime 3. Awakening was slated to be the last entry in the series if it didn't sell well enough, so I guess interest was waning in Japan too.
Of course we all know what happened next. It was only then that Fire Emblem became a true Nintendo cornerstone.
Yeah, I was thinking the same. Maybe he's trying to leave up to his pseudonym? XDDo you enjoy being so confrontational or what? <_<
He kind of passively-aggressively called Nintendo out-of-touch for not bringing Fire Emblem over sooner. As though it was somehow obvious it would do well, based on nothing but hindsight.Yeah, I was thinking the same. Maybe he's trying to leave up to his pseudonym? XD
Nobody expressed an opinion, just stone-cold fact. It's well-known that when Smash N64 came around, Earthbound and Metroid were, if not dead, pretty jeopardized franchises. Earthbound and Super Metroid are rightfully acclaimed as the classics they are right now, but when they came out, their commercial success didn't meet Nintendo's expectations. And a lull of 12 years for the first licence and 8 years for the second one is the definition of a hiatus if there is any. Story says that games were in development for both on the N64 and Nintendo just didn't manage to make them work, but the success of the first Smash, if unexpected, certainly played in allowing these licences to be revived.
As for Fire Emblem, it's also a well-known anecdote that Marth and Roy were almost cut from Melee for the Western versions because Nintendo thought the West wouldn't care about these characters. It is no coincidence that the first Fire Emblem title to be released in the West was the one that came out after Melee (and the first Advance Wars), as they proved popular. Actually, it's also a well-known fact.
So no defense against an accusation that's flat out wrong? :/no drama allowed!!!
That user's just a drama queen. He's already shown himself to have a nervous breakdown in peak pre-release speculation and seems to take any stance counter to his own very poorly. His best "technique" in an argument amounts to covering his ears and insisting the other side's wrong, rarely addressing any points they make.no drama allowed!!!
I'm just saying what I do in times that people bother me on the internet: ignore them. best thing for the psyche you know? I just don't want what happened on the geno board to happen here you know?So no defense against an accusation that's flat out wrong? :/
What about what I said is "Drama" anyways?
I'm merely saying how things are from my side.
What's so wrong with that? :?
Well at this point, there is obviously no point anymore.I'm just saying what I do in times that people bother me on the internet: ignore them. best thing for the psyche you know?
I don't follow that board, so I don't know what happened.I just don't want what happened on the geno board to happen here you know?
Well, that’s what happens when you’ve got ACTUAL MENTAL ILLNESSES STACKED ON TOP OF EACH OTHER, AND A WEAK IRL SUPPORT NETWORK OF FRIENDS AND FAMILY. You slagging dastard. That user's just a drama queen. If you don't want drama, don't respond to what he says unless it's to coddle him. That's my takeaway of the day.
The thread was locked twice because trolls from the speculation and social threads jumped into the Geno thread to say **** to Fatman and kept telling him he wasn't a leaker that his words pretty much had no ground with patterns and such. Me and a bunch of others there defended him and things got really ugly there fast. The guy already told people millions of times that he isn't a leaker and he just speculates and creates theories from what he hears. People really need to lay off the guy.don't know all the details as I only pop in there from time to time, but lots of argueing, people getting banned, and the thread getting locked twice
Yeah I avoid the main thread... its just so...... bad at times. The main thread hurts to read now. Going off topic but something I thought would contribute was ignored. I kind of get why, but I'd figure someone read something different between their long conversations.
My friend found a twitter status on Serebii talking about an up coming event in Feb, apparently pokemon is doing a collab with Miku
I think I'm doing it right
yeah people just like to attack others right now it seems. Fatman sometimes make it seems like he is a leaker when he isn't, just on how he words things. The thread was locked twice because trolls from the speculation and social threads jumped into the Geno thread to say **** to Fatman and kept telling him he wasn't a leaker that his words pretty much had no ground with patterns and such. I know right? It seems like FP5 is never going to be revealed.Man I kinda want some sort of news to bite into now...
Directs always come out like a week or week and a half before the Amiibos come out so it should be within a week after New Years if that pattern repeats itself. January 6th though the 9th is what I'm looking at.January 15th is the cut off since next amiibo come that day
