knuckles' glide actually had acceleration physics to it, so if you glided in the same direction for long enough he would actually surpass sonics running speed.

Well, Knuckles is the template for two "important" characters... Shadow and Silver.

Besides, without Knuckles, there is no eating.

I'll give Blaze a nod for being unique in some form, but like... she's still rather unimportant.

Blaze is pretty important in every non-spinoff Sonic game she's involved in, actually.
Though you can probably make a case against her role in Sonic '06. Then again, everyone whose name doesn't start with S, or is named Elise/Eggman aren't important either.

Even though it's Sonic '06, she has undoubtedly one of the most enjoyable experiences in that game, gameplay wise. There's really no **** ups in her variation of the stages.

This. She can get to some areas Sonic can't because of this, I think. I think blaze is a bit better, but like Tails or Knuckles on the Mega Drive (and Sonic Advance series) she just feels cheap.
