The last time it was shot down, it was only done so because the like button didn't fit perfectly on the page.

edit- also, i don't really think its a big deal if some random posts by good people are thumbed up. Its not like it actually does anything... Its basically just a non-verbal agreement. If someone says something funny, it gets thumbed up. If someone says something stupid, nobody does. If someone contributes good information, it gets thumbed up. If someone gives bad advice, people say stuff and it gets no thumbs. In the end, getting a thumbs up or w/e on ur post is just about understanding the way the community treats each other and how to contribute successfully and positively.

I don't look at SRK.

Look at FB, Youtube, Reddit, ect. They all have working positive feedback systems

All those "like" systems are garbs.

if you like a post, you tell them you like the post. Couldn't hurt to just out right tell them "Good post, John."

That causes a lot of clutter and worthless posts, and takes more effort to perform.

and how are they "garbs"? They seem perfectly fine to me.

We're gonna have worthless posts and clutter with or without this Like system. The Like system could encourage MORE of it, even.

I do not condone this idea.

Also - they are garbs because its a cop out. It gets people out of contributing to conversation. The point of a FORUM is to socialize and converse. Get to know people.

At least, that's how I view it. I find it infuriating when I make a status update and all I get is Likes.

I can even fathom what sort of twisted logic one uses to conclude that replacing clutter produces more clutter.

I'd rather get likes than nothing.

And let's not forget the person who suggested that likes be disableable.

smashers ride jock. if you think gimpyfish saying "first" deserves 62 thumbs up on youtube then I don't know what to tell you.
FB is meh, youtube and srk are bad. you always get the *******ess who just like clicking the like button.

I don't think it should visibly clutter the page either. its positive feedback specifically for the one who posted it. imo it does more harm being public then it does good. again, just me, but id rather not have it if its going to turn into "my fox is tight like everything I say", or "thumbs up if this was a bad idea"

My experience with a reputation system has been mixed. I've seen people who get +rep'd for useful things, +rep'd for useless things, -rep'd for being dumb, and -rep'd because they're trying to reach as low of a rep level as possible.

I don't think Lythium was saying the fb idea itself is trash, even if it can...be thought to be.
there used to be a rep system here, where you could be all "ahhh yeah good post, I'm going to +rep you for that."

problem is people abuse it and +rep each other to have really high rep, etc etc. and every time it's brought up it's just a "no man we don't want to deal with that bull****." well I mean every time I've seen it proposed that's what happens.

also you could argue it's not needed at all. after a little bit you get a good idea of who is a good poster and who isn't.

You know its different proposing an idea and shooting it down because you don't think it'll work than going out and actually testing it.

What's so hard about at least testing the idea out and just taking it off if it's abused?

I was under the impression that SWF used to have a rep system of sorts, and people could +/- rep and leave comments, which led to a lot of flaming and whatnot.

It's just something we're better off not having imo. Plus, it's just another thing to go wrong and crash the servers.

What different purpose do they serve? That you "like" posts rather than "+rep" users?

rep system help users know who are trolls/idiotic posters and good posters. You cant rep someone again until you have repped 30 other people, also there was another factor that I forgot. This is how srk did it, worked well.

The primary flaw in the old rep system was the inclusion of a rep statistic that kept track of how many rep points a person got. This lead to a desire to gain rep or otherwise show their uniqueness with their rep. After countless abuse, it was shut down.

If the system was simply thumbs/like, there would be no statistics gathered which means there is no benefit for getting positive feedback on ur post except maybe community recognition (which is a good thing). This would show, nonverbally, the collective viewpoints of the community.

TBH, I think it is almost necessary to have a -1 if there is a +1. I can go into more detail, but this post is already getting kinda big.

@Kaostar, It would be literally worthless if private. Nobody would even bother liking stuff if they can't see the results themselves. There is also no downside to having it public (except "oh no people are liking his post and not mine!" angst).

They don't have a rep system anymore. And when I asked a couple of SF/Marvel locals why, that's what they told me. :3c

/shrug

Also, if you lurked SRK when they still used rep, a user's rep was either miles high or in the toilet. There was no one really in-between.

They dont have one anymore cause they have changed their "system" like twice already.

Srk has been active for a while with ALOT more users than swf so of coure reps would look that way.

A like button will be a part of our "overhaul", if we get permission to do it.

I'll do the phone icon in VMs (with a few other things) after Independence Day. :p

Aight, Ill ask 1 more time...lol. If and when that overhaul happens, the pic limit. can it be changed to like 50, it would be pretty legit if each of the character threads could simply have a thread showing gifs off all the characters actions for reference purposes....nobody would ever have to say something like does anybody kno how fast x move comes out. It does more good than it does harm imo.

If KAOSTAR's suggestion isn't approved, would it be possible to allow certain posts or threads to exceed the image limit (by some set number) on a case-by-case basis?

Yeah, this would be fantastic for when I get around to doing the melee kirby hitbox thread. I'll be having individual gifs for each of his hats. I'm sure to hit the image limit rather quickly.
