Out of interest why DO people seem so against four slots for a game series with hundreds of characters and thirteen games under it's belt that is decently well received the world over?

It seems like a lot of people think DK might be worthy of having both Dixie and K. Rool, but Fire Emblem doesn't deserve four reps? Nothing against the DK series, I know it's HUGE, but I feel like Fire Emblem is just as deserving of that coveted third and fourth slot.

Again; opinions, and I feel bad because once again; Fire Emblem discussion in this thread.

I'm not against FE having 4 slots.I just think 3 slots are more suitable for it.

I don't want to say that "it shouldn't have as many reps as Zelda or Mario", but I get a little anal about that. I want all the franchises perfectly repped and balanced, mainly because if anything is not perfect, my OCD will start to kick in. But I'm not against FE having 4 slots. But I'd much rather see DK with 4 before FE.

Right now, I'm fine with the Zelda roster we have now. We have the three main parts of the triforce, and a younger Link. That's really all we need.

I think it will be funny if Sakurai manages to get 49/50 slots in Smash 4, and blows away most people's expectations with the roster. I think Sakurai's more low key and more humble statements about Smash 4 are a lesson Sakurai learned from Brawl where the bubble kept being blown bigger and bigger, and frankly people's expectations reached unrealistic proportions (people were expecting Brawl's roster to be close to 50 characters total).

Tis a lesson we learned as well.

Rate/Hate

Pretty decent-sized roster. Your cuts are reasonable, as are your additions. I still see Palutena likely, though. So if you would replace Karate Joe with her I'd be content if that was the roster.

And I also believe it's either Lucario or Jiggz that's being cut. It's tough to tell.

I have a very interesting character in mind for the new Smash Brothers. Keep in mind this is just an idea and more than likely it won't happen. Many people have been discussing the next Pokemon character to be announced. Whether it's going to be a new Pokemon Trainer, the old one, Mewtwo, Lucario, Jigglypuff, or something we aren't expecting at all, it's been on everyoone's minds. What if it was a combination of them (disregarding Jiggly). In Pokemon X & Y, there is a new type of in battle evolution known as Mega-Evolution. There is supposedly a gym leader who is knowledgeable of these evoultions and may even use them in battle. What if this gym leader was the Pokemon represenative in Smash, who used tag team style of play like Pokemon Trainer, but had completley different Pokemon; Mega-Mewtwo, Mega-Lucario, and Mega-Blaziken. Lucario and Mewtwo's movesets would be the same as they are in previous installments except they would have a new look. Blaziken would fight like a Captain Falcon and Lucario inbred child. I personally would LOVE this inclusion because it takes care of 3 roster spots, (Pokemon Trainer, Lucario, and Mewtwo) introduces a completley new fighter, but only takes up one roster spot. Keep in mind this was just an idea, so don't tell me how this will never happen because it most likely won't. So telll me what you guys think about this idea!

I would be ok with the idea.
But amount of roster spots aren't a problem, amount of character is. So it wouldn't really fix anything.

First of all, welcome to the threads!

Second, I don't like that idea. To be honest, I'd rather play as Mewtwo, Lucario, or even Blaziken on their own then having them in a Trainer-esque gameplay. With the whole stamina and being forced to switch out, I'd rather not want that.

Besides, Lucario and Mewtwo might get their Megas as a Final Smash in the next game!

There's demand for a new Pokemon Trainer? News to me...

In all seriousness, though, the Trainer will most likely not be leaving. He is iconic, popular, and in himself has 3 of the most popular Pokemon.

I'd much rather see May with Mudkip/Grovyle/Blaziken, but that's a personal opinion. But a man can dream.

I could see Lucario as part of a gimmick trainer. Particularly Cynthia.


But for the most part, I think one all encompassing Pokemon Trainer is all we're getting. Whether it's the Gen 1 variation in Brawl/don'tkillmeHyperFalcon Red or some newer version.

As for text roster guy, maybe separate your character likelihood by color/formatted text (bold for confirmed, red for very likely, etc.). It's not a bad roster, but I think your definition of very likely is being too hopeful.

Guys I have been working in making a list of obscure, retro and forgotten characters from Nintendo, can you please help me add more to the list, the parameters should be: it need a protagonist, the protagonist should be playable in one form or another, at least more than 10 years from their last game (not counting Virtual Console), I´m counting 2014 so games from 2004 under this year should be considered and the protagonists should not appear in many games. By the way there is a rank, Tier 1 - they appear a lot as cameos in many games and have virtual console releases, Tier 5 - only one game in all the series (not counting updates in consecutive years).

A bit too much stacking of franchises, IMO.

Even if it's an obscure franchise I've never heard of until I see it in SSB, I'd much rather more franchises are represented instead of having 5 characters from the same franchise.

EDIT: I really like new franchise characters, like issac, lil mac, shulk and dillon, but I only included the characters that seemed the most likely to me.

if characters like dillon and shulk seemed more plausible to me, I would probably put them ahead of characters like waddle dee and girahiam.

shulk is probably the only newcomer from a new series I would of fit on if I wanted a bit more characters.

toon link's a clone, tom nook could be ALSO represented (AC is a big series) DK is big enough for two newcomers, I needed another 3rd party for the roster contest, and that was the first one that has had major history with nintendo that I could think of, cloud doesn't even have nintendo history, my retro rep is ALSO black mage, kamek is my only personal bias character

honestly I'm not too sure why waddle dee's on here though.

It's not too much Zelda, it's as much as we were going to get in Brawl. Less actually, if transformations are counted. But I will agree the characters chosen are questionable.

See, the inclusion of Starfy isn't a problem, but he's not a character so likely his exclusion will cause the roster to suffer. Trust me, no roster needs Starfy.

Kamek is a guy. But yeah... he's not really too likely. Not a horrible choice I suppose, just an unlikely one. So whatever.

Are we talking about FF again? Actually Black Mage makes more sense than Cloud, it's just unlikely we get any SE character at this point I'd say.

toon link's a clone, tom nook could be ALSO represented (AC is a big series) DK is big enough for two newcomers, I needed another 3rd party for the roster contest, and that was the first one that has had major history with nintendo that I could think of, cloud doesn't even have nintendo history, my retro rep is ALSO black mage, kamek is my only personal bias character

honestly I'm not too sure why waddle dee's on here though.

• Toon Link being a clone doesn't mean anything. Sakurai clearly thinks a 2nd Link is important
• I don't think DK deserves 4 like Pokemon & Mario do. We can easily suffice without BOTH K. Rool & Dixie Kong.
• Black Mage was the FIRST person with major nintendo history you could think of?
• I don't care if Animal Crossing deserves 4 reps because Villager is basically "Mr. animal Crossing" if Sakurai wanted a character from the game he would have never picked the Avatar. Villager's move set is based on what you do in the series so having another Animal Crossing rep is just as pointless as having another Game & Watch rep.
• You can't have the third-party be your retro rep, and I can't really approve of your roster if it doesn't have Takamaru. :/

I do, I do! Tis also a smaller roster from the norm, as in all honesty I am not expecting more then 42-43 characters (not including transformations).

People gonna hate the cuts and size of the roster. Haters gonna hate. Where the frickity frack is the rainbow parrot blob gif thing when you need it. Q_Q

I DO think that there will be cuts, and toon link will be the first to go. unfortunately.
not only was the black mage the first, but also the best one I thought of. I originally only had two 3rd party reps, but I needed to squeeze another in for the contest.
animal crossing does deserve two reps. and there's more than enough material for a semi clone or even an original character. there's lot's of items left out that can be linked to tom nook, like letters, bells, houses and a lot of people say furniture.
alright you got me, I didn't have a retro rep. so what? is it THAT important? it's probably someone no-one is expecting, and it could even be lil mac if sakuri thinks that he's retro enough.

Personally, I'm a man who can understand cuts where necessary - my roster cuts Jiggles, Toon Link, Wolf/Falco (I'm indifferent but one of the two) and Snake - but Lucas? Really? I find that having two Earthbound protagonists helps explain the series a bit better, and is representative of its nature of having an ever-changing cast. Plus, considering how much of a soft spot Sakurai showed for Mother 3 in Brawl (it got a boss, a stage, a new character, bumped Ness back to unlockable and had a whole load of MyMusic spots) it just seems weird to think the guy would prioritise Ness over Lucas. Earthbound sits nicely at two spots - three spots is too many for such a small series and one spot betrays the nature of the series and its cast.
