I think if there are as of now unannounced games to be released next year prior to Smash (like a Kirby game for example), we could still very well see promotion tied to that game. But currently, I agree, Yoshi's New Island seems to be the last major one (though who knows, they could use a FE character for SMTxFE or maybe even Shulk for X - if they are related).

I don't think we should assume there's a pattern that newly announced characters are tied to game releases, nor that there will be a character reveal once per month...
I'm going to believe in the latter more then the former. It's a good pattern to keep up anyway by a promotion standpoint because things will be at a consistent pace. By the end of the year we'll have 4 more characters revealed, plus the possibility of another 12 being revealed during the whole next year. In total, if you combine the characters we have now and then later, we could in theory have 30 characters total revealed by December 2014.

Of course, there are several factors to keep in mind before going crazy about this. First off, the factor of when the games will be released. Could be spring 2014 to spring 2015, we just don't know, but one thing for sure is that a spring 2014 release date and beyond is a possibility. Second there is the factor that we might get more of an inflation of information as development time continues. Thirdly, there is always the possibility that we might get two or more characters revealed in the month or none at all depending on the situations provided.

I really am curious what happens with "child" Link this time. I am also curious what the A Link Between Worlds Link will be named if he does happen to get in. The new official art for him was shown for the latest Nintendo Direct, and he looked like a cross between Young Link and Toon Link. His proportions are more similar to Young Link though.

If Sakurai does use this design, I could easily see him getting differing specials involving the magic hammer and the fire rod.

Yeah I would wonder what his nick name would be as well. Then again, if Toon Link ends up staying after all then I don't think there is much need to wonder about that.

Yeah he could. But I'd imagine he would probably stick to the usual weapons. Even if so, they could at least tweak them a bit further. Such as giving more control of the arrows you shoot in a similar fashion to the Cracker Launcher.

In theory, if we had a character almost every month, then for sure thee game is getting delayed to 2015. Unless they are developing unlockable characters behind our backs while making the starters.

No, a character reveal every month. Naturally they are not going to reveal every single detail all at once.

Just remember that development is not exactly correlated to reveals, there is easily a lot more details we don't know about that has yet to be shown.

I do not think game development works the way you think it works.

If they only announce, say 25 characters prior to release, that does not mean there's only 25 characters. The smart money says every character who's going to be in the game has already been implemented in one way or another, even if that is in a vastly incomplete form.

Yeah BluePikmin, the character reveals are scheduled around the existing roster, the roster isn't being dictated by how many characters get revealed prior to release...

Well from the Brawl website, they revealed the Unlockables (Besides 3rd parties) for at least two months near Brawl's release (in US). That's a faster update than the starters update. :p (Which took 2 years)
I could see the same for Smash 4, they are probably developing unlockable characters right now, which they could be developing Mewtwo right now. (it's my guess)

.
Considering we have not even gotten:
- Peach
- Diddy Kong
- Zelda
- Sheik
- Zero Suit Samus
- Yoshi
- Meta Knight
- King Dedede
- Wario
- Ice Climbers

That leaves room for only five more newcomer confirmation assuming there is only a "one character a month" rule. That number goes down even further since we will likely get a starter Mother character (Ness or Lucas), and a FE veteran starter (Marth or Ike).

I would not be surprised if we ended up getting two character confirmations a month starting in the second half of 2014.

Keep in mind though that the game was already out in Japan before they started officially revealing all the unlockables in the Brawl Dojo.

Unless I got your point wrong.

Either way, Unlockables did not start getting shown off until after the game had been released. And yes, they are probably developing the unlockables right now, in fact chances are they've been developing the unlockables for months; they don't work on characters one at a time.

That's because the game was already out in Japan and everybody already knew the hidden characters, so they was no point dragging out their reveal on the DOJO.

And they might be developing characters now, sure, but they've likely already been decided for a while now (even Mewtwo - if he is to come back), and then the schedule was made around them, they weren't made around the reveal schedule.

Oh, my gosh so much to talk about I guess I'll start with HOLY HELL MEGA EVOLUTIONS AREN'T EXCLUSIVE TO MEWTWO!? WILL WE EVEN GET MEWTWO'S AWAKENED FORM IN SMASH!?

Now before I release my surprise for everyone let me take care of this first.
Yes he did, just look at Wii Fit Trainer. Nobody asked for it!
Wii Fit Trainer was added because of the popularity of Wii Fit and move set potential. Sakurai has NEVER added a character for lulz and the Smash Roster is not based on requested characters.
In Smash bros, there's little to no such thing as "overrep/underrep"
Yes, there actually is.

SSB team did have lot of hard works on Red back in Brawl time. But when Leaf was going to have two veteran pokemon, it'd save time working on their movesets, and for leaf's animation they can just borrow Red's animation as well.
Leaf: model, uses all Red's stage animation excepts only Winning/Loser animation. (x0.125)
Pichu: model update, moveset idea completed, needs minor updates to de-clone Pikachu. (x0.25)
Purin: model update, moveset idea completed. (x0.25)
Eevee: model, moveset. (x1)
Nobody wants to have to switch between those previously playable characters and Pichu NOT being a clone of Pikachu is not going to happen. Pichu's only chance is DLC.

Geno? Homer Simpson? LOLWHAAAT? You must be kidding! Tom Nook isn't like THAT ridiculous characters! I'd take it as your opinion.
The point was just because a character CAN happen doesn't mean it will. You need more to back it up.

Not only.
In a way...

I'm thinking Luigi being revealed this early means the chances of a Mario newcomer has been increased. Other then the 3rd parties, no character has been revealed before the games released that ended up being a secret character. And I highly doubt they'd have all the Mario characters all up on the roster on Day 1 with the game.

I still doubt we'll see a 2014 release. Summer 2015 sounds most likely to me really...

Oh yeah, and the roster was decided ages ago. Anything added from here on, would be last minute cuts/additions.

The Megaforms look more like something for Final Smashes rather than a transforming special move.

I can imagine that, even if Lucario's Final Smash remains the same, he could still transform into Mega Lucario for aesthetic purposes.

Mewtwo could unleash Psystrike instead.
Eh depends really on how Mega Evolutions works. According to Serebii "Megastones" have been hinted at/mentioned meaning it is possible for them to be permanent evolutions instead of just form changing, espically since they are actually called Mega Evolutions and not Megaforms. If they do end up being like that it would be pretty iffy to see them Mega Evolve for a Final Smash and then de-evolve after. But ofc we still don't quite know how Mega Evolutions work, but considering they are called evolutions I would say it is a safe bet to presume it being a permanent sort of things.

We just don't know what exactly is going to play out. We may get a rough idea on how it plays out, but nothing is going to be concrete.

Also to add more fuel to the fire, there is always the possibility that characters might swap the position of unlockable and default similar to how Captain Falcon and Ness constantly swap between the two between games. There is of course the possibility that some characters might get scrapped due to whatever priorities and time constraints come up.

No because it's the Year of Luigi that Luigi was revealed this year, and I believe he is a starter now.
Luigi's unveil was also used to promote Mario & Luigi Dream Team.

Really curious how the rest of the year is going to go down for character unveils, particularly October and November which is crowded.

He was revealed because it's the year of Luigi, it's not going to be the year of luigi in 2014 and even if it was it still wouldn't make sense for Luigi to be a starter. This is SO stupid.

We get it. You think Luigi as a starter would be stupid. Guess what? In the end it's the producer's choice anyways, and if they want to put Luigi as a starter they can. There's nothing from stopping them. There's all sorts of inconsistencies and rules all around the roster of what can and can't be unlockable. The only thin we didn't see with Brawl is Melee characters that were unlockable being changed to the starting roster.

(And if any were I forget)

Since we we started talking about Mario characters yesterday.........I've come up with a theory that may prove Paper Mario to be a likely character.

There were several trophies of Paper Mario characters, some that weren't even just personas of pre-existing Mario characters. This is similar to how Toon Link got a lot of Toon trophies.............

"PRA_MAI" is PAPER MARIO!

You know, that would have been better if you didn't post the video.

Anyways, that's not actually an implausible theory. Not that I believe it, but wasn't there a rumor going on about paper mario in this installment? And wasn't one Paper Mario song at least cut from the final game?

Oh gawd, but it's probably too late for Lucario at this point to consider.
Well first off Sakurai has probably known about this for a while already, and secondly Lucario had a pretty decent chance of returning anyway.

Why are we talking about the same topic in two threads?
Because we're horribly inefficient. :p

My birthday is also in September, which might make me question what will be revealed. Could be an awesome gift depending on what gets revealed.
Well I got my Brawl main confirmed for my birthday month, so by that logic I'm sure Sakurai will give you something good for your month as well. That's how it works, right?
