I was playing a lot of friendlies today and realised that it is sometimes a good idea to mix up your recovery between firebird and phantasm. Anyone who's played against a Falco before would know that they can punish Falco's phantasm with good prediction. It is the Falco's job to mix up between phantasming to ledge and on-stage. However, I have found some neat uses for firebird.

My first example is against MK. A lot of MKs tend to just throw out tornado to catch us in the middle of phantasm. To remedy this I suggest trying to firebird into it. I once did it by accident and it worked lol, because firebird somehow beats it out. I did it like 4 or 5 times today when playing so I'm fairly confident that it's a viable mixup option.

Another example is against snake. Snake often uses mortars and grenades to punish our phantasm recovery, but since firebird has a long start-up it helps with avoiding the mortars because snake usually uses them to hit Falco out of the middle of phantasm.

Just thought I'd point this out. It's simple, yet overlooked.

You're up b is a really good option that is overlooked. If you up b into someone there's a good chance it'll shield poke or people will drop their shield too early and get hit by it.

My ego...It's OVER 9000!
Firebird has great uses in this point of the metagame. People just don't expect it and many don't know how to fight it.

DEHF I remember you using it to escape from a juggle against...Brood? -maybe it was m2k I can't remember.

Yeah i normally just try to get back on stage with phantasm and as we all do.. we get punished for it. But however i will try my firebird next time and see how it goes. This is a good idea because most people dont expect it.

But however if they shield it then they could punish us just as bad as us doing a normal phantasm.

I still think a shortened phantasm would be better to get back on stage but im not going to talk bad about this idea until i try it so i just hope it worked great.

Great idea though :)

So are we going to come to similar conclusions regarding Falco's Dtilt, Shine, and Fair?

FH Fair can be good on following opponents who take vertical knockback at mid percents. It catches people going into airdodges or jumps rather well. It can either outlast the airdodge, or the long hitbox can catch people trying to jump above what they thing will be Uair, or Bair.

Shine I still am not sure where to use it apart from projectiles. I agree it has good priority, excellent speed and range, yet it seems only good for disrupting people.

Dtilt I think set-ups rather nicely at low-mid percents. I think it should be used more often in jab cancels.

dtilt is nice against marth since it puts him in a really bad position. like he has no hitboxes besides dair that cover his feet.

i think shine is a good mix up against people trying to space against your ftilts or just to disrupt approaches. no one ever thinks "oh yea, gotta look out for that falco shine"

drill peck gets STAB so its always good to use.

I like downward firebirds that sweetspot the ledge.

A lot of people expect a ledgedrop or an onstage phantasm, and since most people aren't used to dealing with firebird, they actually don't edgeguard it as well when they jump out.

Of course if you're not careful they can edgehog it so it's best used sparingly and cleverly, which I'm sure you guys will have the intellectual capacity to judge what I mean by that.

i think the up b at like the 30 degree angle upwards from the horizontal is the best firebird personally. especially if you start it up in such a position that it will go onto the stage if someone edge hogs you and grabs the edge if they dont. most people in my experience will go for the edge hog and then you've reversed positions.

Yeah Choice I agree, the 30 degree firebird certainly has its uses because of it's surprising horizontal distance enabling you to get on the edge.

I need to see more Falcos firebirding into tornado :D

If a MK edgeguards with nado while you're hanging, you can fastfall drop and firebird back up. That really helped me with tornado edgeguards lol.

if mk tornados near the edge, like not right on top of it, you can also ledge jump-> dj-> ff air dodge to the ground and be safe the entire time.
