Story Mode (ala SSE)
Chance: 40%
Whatever that green mode is on the meny, it's certain to be big. And considering the all-stops development of Ultimate, it's not far-fetched to imagine that it might be oft-speculated single-player mode. After all, why have such a big crossover party if you won't try to make a story out of the whole thing?
For a lot of players, the Subspace Emissary is one of the great highlights of Smash Bros. history, and is something worth trying to replicate again. While I'm not convinced that Ultimate is going to honor Smash's history to the point that it'll try to emulate the SSE, the possibility's yet to be disproven, and there's plenty of people who certainly wish for it. However, it's also possible that Sakurai might have a different direction in mind for Ultimate's single-player, considering that he's experiment with single-player modes for all of Smash's history.
The reveal of the Subspace Emissary back in Brawl's development was one of the biggest updates to ever blow the internet's mind - but it also came pretty early on, gradually padded out with updates as the countdown to Brawl's release approached. I feel like we'd have seen a proper introduction to such a mode in at least the previous direct for Ultimate, if such a large campaign actually existed.
Want: 50%
Look, I love crossover cutscenes just as much as anyone, but developing The Subspace Emissary was nothing more than a complete disaster for Brawl. All those delays, all those developed assets and rigs, all those pre-rendered cutscenes -
none of it mattered in the actual playable meat of the game itself. None of it saw the light of a multiplayer match, which is utterly ridiculous when Smash Bros is at its core a multiplayer game, because why spend so much development on something that had almost nothing to do with the multiplayer part? None of it could do anything about the Brawl meta dying faster than any other Smash's meta.
And what did all that development amount to? A six-hour Kirby game whose best feature was a staggered hour-long movie. You didn't even have to buy Brawl to enjoy the SSE - all you really had to do was click
a Youtube link.
All these high Want scores feel similar to expecting one's parents to do twice the workload at whatever demanding job they're already doing. So much work is already going into making sure the mechanics themselves have replayability, that the roster is fun and balanced, and that the online connections are working as laglessly as possible. Anything on at least the same scope as the SSE would be one massive, undeniable distraction from all of that - and it'd
have to be at least the SSE's equal, if not bigger, because otherwise what's the point?
At the end of the day, a story mode ends up as nothing more than a talking point that doesn't do anything for player retention. Which is fine for most other games - but for a competitive multiplayer game, the goal is to have people actually
playing the game, not simply talking about the game. When Ultimate launches, the SSE is going to be the only good thing that Brawl will have going for it, and that's nowhere near the best kind of legacy a Smash should have.
