Normally, I would prioritise Meta Knight over Dedede, but the rest are great choices; Ganondorf has his own moveset, Banjo is in three games early, and Lip is a good retro pick IMO. Jigglypuff is missing, but I never cared for her.

Just curious, where did you find this roster?

Since I did my take on 64, here’s what I’ll do for Melee:
Blood Falcon


Ganondorf is unique. I did consider some cross series clones like Ray, Lip (based on ideas I saw on GameFAQs), and a Wave Race rep, but stuck with safer picks in the end.

Not as much variety but I can still appreciate it.

I understand. I mainly chose Toad, Dixie, and BWD for being big first parties missing from the base roster, Travis for being a creator request like Sonic and Snake, and Eggman for a second Sonic rep. I honestly prefer your roster to mine.

7.5/10 - Good choices here and I like that there are some niche picks here and there, though the lack of third parties kinda sticks out to me (unless that was the intent).

Since Perkilator did a way better job at a delayed Melee than I did, I'll revise another roster of mine.




Ganondorf has a fully unique moveset and the other clones are upgraded to semi-clones. Since this would've released around the time of Wind Waker, I added Toon over Young Link for promotional purposes. Falco was almost reduced to an alt (as was originally intended) and Lyn almost replaced Roy, but I like them too much to go through with either.

Characters: 8/10. Overall good picks, but with how often they’re discussed by everyone, it’s a bit less interesting.

Nitro Tracks: 6/10. The nitro tracks are kind of trying too hard. Omissions like Mario Circuit are questionable.

Retro Tracks: 3/10. What happened here? The difficulty and thematic pacing is off, with Moo Moo Farm and Mushroom City being odd choices to end cups with. Also I dislike the idea of having a cup solely dedicated to a theme. All Wario tracks just remove the diversity we could have gotten from other tracks.

The newcomer selection seems logical, and I like seeing Isaac on these rosters. I also like the curveballs that you chose with the echoes (Funky Kong was third on Swamp‘s poll, but I think some would not expect him over King K. Rool or Dixie Kong).

Most of the veteran selection seems reasonable to me, but Pokemon Trainer feels like a glaring omission, and I wish Icies were there.

8/10 from me! Some of the choices do make sense, but then there's a few that seem a bit odd to me. Like... Estelle. I didn't even know of her existence until now, and was scratching my head seeing this seemingly random name next to Terry Bogard and Cash Banooca. But hey, her series could be really huge and I just don't know, so its small potatoes.

Here's a bit of a double feature!
I remembered when I used to be active on Reddit for a while, and played this 2+ month game of building rosters of both 30 & 50 characters using characters voted on by other redditors almost every day. It was tiring, and it was all done on my old rinky-dink phone, but I eventually finished.

This first one was originally supposed to be somewhat of a soft reboot roster, and that the only guarantees were the OG 12, and only 3 Third-Party characters were allowed. No new characters would ever top the votes for this one.

The original consensus was that it was a pretty good roster, and that it could've been a bit better if we had a few more characters, so.... boom! A second roster was born! And newer characters would FINALLY be suggested. The mindset was now "Smash 6/Back to basics" instead of "Soft reset" here. 20 new character spots, with 4 of them being reserved for Third-Parties.

This one was also positively received, albeit with less people talking about it. One guy even saying it was "the best" of the redditor-voted rosters back then. But what do you guys think?

30 player roaster: 9 out of 10. It’s simple but very effective, plus many fan favs are there, as with Dixie Kong

50 player roaster: 8 out of 10. While I’m disappointed there’s no Galar Pokémon, but we have Eggman and Bandanna Dee to balence them out.

8/10 not bad, but some notes of mine:

• I’d swap Wario and Waluigi’s positions
• I may love Funky Kong, but I don’t think getting rid of King K. Rool was worth it
• A lot of series-wise placements are weird in general. I won’t go into specifics, but I will say that this is why I don’t like Smash 4-style CSS arrangements.
• Cutting Wolf I can get behind, but not cutting Falco. I’m also not a big fan of how you cut all Konami representation plus Banjo and Sora, the two winners of the Smash Ballot.
• And speaking of Banjo; you cut him but kept Steve? Really?

Mario Circuit and Daisy's Garden are... not that great (Mario Circuit for being just another Mario Circuit in a game that could afford to not include an entirely new MC and just being more bland than the concept it's replacing, and Daisy's Garden for coming off as sounding like just "Daisy Hills 2" but not as compelling aesthetic-wise. But even Daisy's Garden is fine, everything else is also fine at the absolute worst, and the city tracks with the best aesthetics still had the aesthetics retained. Bully Fight Boulevard is the highlight for me by a long shot for the implication of Bullys being added to the track.



This roster is my take on a hypothetical Super Smash Bros. where, instead of being the full Nintendo crossover it is, the original Super Smash Bros. only featured Mario (and Mario side series) characters, under the name "Mario All-Star Brawl" and still assuming a 1999 release (maybe a little later in 1999 if need be for whatever reason).

Just some additional clarifications:

Boom Boom was primarily added to give Bowser a clone to match Mario's Luigi. If Bowser Jr. existed at this time, he would've absolutely taken this spot, but since he doesn't, Boom Boom was the only other option.

Goomba is an intentional joke character comparable to Jigglypuff.

Kamek would have multiple midair jumps. Maybe Goomba could too, not sure on that one.

And since someone's probably gonna wonder about these two: 1999 was before Daisy's reintroduction to Mario series and Waluigi's literal introduction to the series (Mario Tennis was in 2000), so bare that in mind.

Like a 7. Some weird cuts. cutting down series like Kirby only to give Ki and Xenoblade newcomers is weird and you've cut whole series. the third parties are too fsr, several "who?" , several characters who don't even exist. I do like a lot of the newcomer picks on their own though.
