And more enemies from Kid Icarus in Smash Run! Bumbety Bombs and from our army, Zuree!

My guess is we will get one more newcomer reveal in the August direct, and we'll get about six newcomers left as surprises when the game comes out in September. Medusa included.

Also I went to Smash-Fest, and general consensus was in agreement with me. We need more classic 80's Nintendo villains in Smash. Especially everyone's favorite towering, purple, scaly villain.

You know. Medusa. :troll:
As much as I hope the next newcommer announce will follow our cheesy Dark Pit cliffhanger, I'm expecting Medusa to be unlockable now.
But this is Smash Bros. Everything can happen.

Eh, that's fine. As long as she's in. Though seeing her at E3 would've been pretty great.

I understand E3 newcommers.

A guest, while not obvious, is better to be shown during such a big event.
It's better for the miis to be announced during this event, so Sakurai can explain them a bit (plus the epic Iwata VS Reggie fight :awesome:)
And Palutena is just hype.

But there goes my surprising characters... Well, Miis movesets (and PacMan's moveset to an extent) are surprising, at least.

Again, Palutena's cliffhanger give me hope for Medusa.

For the past year I've said to myself how I would not want Medusa in Smash if she "overrides" Palutena also being in the game. Palutena has been one of my top anticipated newcomers since the beginning. Now that she is confirmed, I'm starting to think more about a third Kid Icarus rep. Three doesn't seem very likely, unfortunately, but Medusa seems like the best option. Dark Pit wouldn't be a very creative choice and Magnus wasn't really that important to KI:U's story (I'm glad though that he's been assigned as an AT). So yeah, Medusa and Hades both work very well in my mind.

Another note...someone who has never seen/heard of Smash Bros before may look upon the character roster for the first time and not know anyone at all. Kinda the position I was in when I first saw Melee when I was like 7 years old. I knew Pikachu from the TV show, and maybe I knew Mario and crew. But any unfamiliar person living the Western world looking upon SSB4's roster will most likely recognize the name "Medusa"! So that's another little point why adding her would benefit the roster.

I'll be fine with KI getting a third rep. Only if K. Rool and Ridley get in first. If we get K. Rool and Ridley, KI can have as many reps as it wants (and it really should be Medusa next :p). Oh and Ganondorf needs a moveset, too.

Pittoo seems like he's getting better chances than Medusa now, that tease..
I think you guys might be leaded to disappointment, unless Dark Pit calls in Hades or Medusa in a reveal trailer if that's what Sakurai is getting into.
Alternate skin for Pit, if anything. Like WFT he could even get different voice clips.

If Pittoo was a fully playable character separate from Pit, there's no way they would show him before his reveal.

Having Dark Pit as a separate character is the worst idea for a third KI rep.

There's a difference between a veteran and a newcommer. Even though he is not officialy announced, you don't get hype to know how Game&Watch plays, for example. For an unplayable character (in the previous games), it's totally different.
This is also nothing like the sneakiest tease ever, Galaga. We have his face, his name.

This reminds me people who thought Nook will be playable because he saw the "smash invitational letter".

Nah.. unlike Tom Nook, the end of the trailer featuring Dark Pit seems to be alluding to something of a big role.

Yep, that's the difference. But to me, it would be a bad "newcommer teasing". It's not hints, the character is fully shown here. But... That's it. No gameplay, no 3D models, ect. I'm expecting a big role, but clearly not playable.

The whole trailer was a tribute to Kid Icarus Uprising, for me Dark Pit inclusion is only a pun on the first chapter of the game with Pit crashing Medusa's party. Why show a newcomer like that?

Dark Pit confirms that Pit dark pallete will have Dark Pit's voice.

So I don't see him as more likely now or affecting Medusa in anyway

Never thought of the contrast between Pit crashing Medusa's Party, and Dark Pit crashing Palutena's party.

I think that was the clear intention of the trailer, Angel crashing Goddess of Darkness welcome party and dark angel crashing Goddess of Light party. The references in this trailer were amazing

I really don't know why people would call Dark Pit a better choice than Medusa for a third Kid Icarus character, nor do I really get why despite the ridiculous boost in content it's getting, a third character is somehow unlikely.

I mean would anyone who thinks Dark Pit is a great idea for a Kid Icarus newcomer cut Ganondorf from all future installments of Smash Bros. so that Link's dark palette swap shows up on its own roster square? Probably not, that would be *kind* of ridiculous.

The only character I can MAYBE see getting in before Medusa is Hades, but even then I feel like Medusa would be a better fit.

Now that we see Palutena has fully customizable specials I would be even MORE excited to see her as a clone... with her own set of specials, of course.

I really do not think any series would lose its classic and most recurring antagonist in favor of a one-time villain whose arc only encompasses a few chapters to be completely honest. And I don't know why Medusa would need to be a clone of Palutena.

She would not have to be a clone, but she would function fine as one (rather have that over Dark Pit.)

Also, let's be honest here, I like Medusa far more then Hades, but Hades was the main Villain of Uprising, starting on Chapter 10 (of 25- so most of the game.) Medusa was also not the main villain in Kid Icarus: Of Myths and Monsters.

Medusa, as awesome as she is, was the big bad in one of three Kid Icarus games.

If we're going to use the one Kid Icarus game that Uprising does not acknowledge at all, Hades' odds are even WORSE.

Let's take a look at this.

1st game? Medusa was the villain throughout.
2nd game? Orcos was the villain throughout.
3rd game? Medusa was the villain for 9 chapters. Hades was the villain in all of the chapters in which the Forces of Nature, the Aurum, or the Chaos Kin were NOT the main antagonists.

That's at most six chapters if you give him The Wish Seed, which was the start of the Forces of Nature arc, and the Lightning Chariot. Which was part of the Chaos Kin arc. So Hades was the "antagonist" for... 8% of the entire franchise, to Medusa's 45%? What a track record. Being the final boss in one new game really does not count for much.

EDIT: Even if we take out Myths and Monsters, it's Hades at the helm of 12% of the series to Medusa's 68%. Yes, he was more important at the end of Uprising. But that doesn't give him nearly enough brownie points here.

Also, I'm stretching it a bit, because Ganondorf = Ganon, but Ganondorf himself doesn't appear in a lot of games in the Zelda franchise.

Yeah, this comparison really does fit better. Medusa has way more prominence than Hades, despite Hades being the main antagonist of Uprising. What people keep trying to argue was "TECHNICALLY" Hades started the events of the first two games, but that's unconfirmed and doesn't mean anything, he still wasn't in either game, and if Sakurai really does put Hades in over Medusa he's definitely favoring his characters, which would annoy so many people.

Also, I'm stretching it a bit, because Ganondorf = Ganon, but Ganondorf himself doesn't appear in a lot of games in the Zelda franchise.
This doesn't really apply all too much since its still Ganondorf throughout. A Link to the Past, the third game, established Ganondorf as Ganon's real name and true form and Ocarina of Time finalized it. Plus Ganondorf has a much bigger track record in comparison to Kid Icarus, since the franchise is so small.

I'm.....not arguing against Medusa. Truth be told, I wanted her in Smash more then Palutena, I just think that Hades can be argued over her (and vice versa.) She was brushed aside in Uprising... she was a pawn, it's a bit like Zues getting in Playstation All Stars over Ares actually.

Also, Hades was the driving force behind everything that happened in Uprising, so he was ALWAYS the villain. It's like arguing Bowser wasn't the main villain of New Super Mario Bros. because he only shows up at the end.

Ganon(dorf) does have the best track record among Zelda villains, however. He appears more frequently than just about everyone, with only Vaati holding multiple game appearances as a major / the main villain under his belt.

EDIT: But he can't. She was brushed aside? If by brushed aside you mean "She was a more prominent villain and was even brought back for no reason other than to punch Hades' face off", then yes. She was 'brushed aside'.

Picking Hades over Medusa would necessitate the ENTIRE SERIES be ignored, and even requires we pretend most of UPRISING never happened. Like, that's a decision someone would make if they knew nothing about Kid Icarus outside of chapters 10 - 24 of Uprising.

It's like putting Demise in over Ganondorf just because "Hey, in that one new game and literally nowhere else, he was retconned to be behind Ganon in the long run." Even though... that doesn't actually account for much unless Demise started to actually overtake Ganon in future games.

Dude, come on, Zelda has over a dozen titles, Kid Icarus has 3. It is not the same thing at all. Medusa was a fake out in Uprising, put there so you could relive the NES game and not realize how long the game was. Even when she punches Hades face off, it was only so that he could literally kill her off. Again.

So you ARE actually going to entirely ignore the first nine chapters and last one chapter of the game to prove a point. Then there's no point in trying to have a constructive conversation with you. Have fun with that.

EDIT: Starting right now, Kid Icarus 1, Myths and Monsters, and chapters 1-9 and 25 of Uprising literally never happened. Sorry everyone. Time to go home.

Or not. But yeh anyway, I feel that Palutena's trailer was a setup for a future Kid Icarus trailer (possibly) but was mostly hinting at Dark Pit being an alternate costume.

I'm NOT arguing against those chapters, but it was a lead up to Hades! She says, repeatedly, that she can't remember how she came back. He brought her back as a distraction! It's like Bowser kidnapping Peach, it set the wheels in motion! It can even be argued that she wasn't the real Medusa, but just a bunch of souls put together with her memories.

Also she was a pawn, she says so herself in the last chapter! She won't be his puppet anymore!

EDIT: Of Myths and Monster did happen as well. Medusa was not part of it.

True, but Ganondorf (even though he only had, what, two games in his human incarnation) does play a huge role in the history of the Zelda franchise, so much that the battle between him and Link from Ocarina of Time branches off into three seperate continuities.

I mean, nobody's gonna make arguments for monsters like Bellum (unless it was Bellumbeck), Demise, Malladus, or the Nightmare being playable in Smash Bros., and one-off villains like Onox, Veran, Ghirahim, and Vaati (well, two-off for Vaati) are a little harder to push. It sorta boils down to "who mattered more in the franchise" as opposed to "who looks the coolest".

The reason why Medusa is a more popular choice, I think is simply these four reasons...

1. Medusa's a female. Sure, she may not be the prettiest dame of the bunch, what with all those snakes and the cyclopian eye she tries to hide, but even with the addition of three new females (Wii Fit Trainer, Rosalina, and Palutena), there is always room for one more, and I'd rather have Medusa in over some choices (*cough*Crystal*cough*).
2. Her moveset has the possibility to be as interesting, if not more, than Palutena's.
3. In a way, you ended up feeling bad for Medusa, so you kinda want her to get her moment of glory.
4. Sakurai does play favorites, but he's not that dumb. Medusa's a benchmark character in the franchise, while Hades was a one-off. If you put Villain of the Game over Villain of the Series, people WILL get pissed.

I want Medusa playable over Hades because, like I said earlier, Medusa was the only thing I liked from Uprising (I didn't like the attempts at humor, some elements of the storyline, including Chaos Kin, really bothered me, and as a leftie, I never could get into the controls... it's not a bad game, but it wasn't for me). I thought Hades was a forced character in which Sakurai tried to make him an evil you-know-what while he pretended to be affable entity when he would explain his intentions to brutally dismember you, smiling the whole time.

I think a lot of people add a 5 there, where they feel Kid Icarus deserves three characters and they feel Medusa simply matters more to the series. And actually, while I disagree about how enjoyable the humor was in Uprising, Medusa was a breath of fresh air being actually reasonably serious and easy to take seriously. The only other character like that was a spider/crab/demon monster that stole souls. So uh... I dunno what to say there. And it'd be nice to actually get the serious side of Kid Icarus represented in Super Smash Bros. a bit.

Well, it's always hard to compare Zelda and Kid Icarus because of the sizes of those franchise, but Medusa surely is more important to the whole serie, like Pit and Palutena (obviously).

I wonder if KI: Myth and Monsters is canon. There's no mentions of it in Uprising after all.

That says to me that they intended to kind of disregard it forever, since the rebirth of the series devoted literally all of its time to only referencing Kid Icarus NES. I don't really care either way, but that's just how it seems to me. I mean there were only two games for it to reference, and they didn't reference one even once.

And Kid Icarus clearly have no shortcomings when it comes to references.

I just took a look at Pit and Palutena's trophies in Brawl, it's said they only appeared in the original Kid Icarus. No mentions of Myths and Monsters.

I feel like the difficulty with Medusa is Sakurai bias.

There's no question that she has been the main villian for a while and it's her rivalry with Palutena that drove the concept of the game for a while. But Sakurai adding Hades makes me think he's not too fond of her and would probably prioritize Hades.

That aside, Medusa and Hades are the only main Kid Icarus characters whose role in Smash we still don't know. I'm excited to see what Sakurai does with them. Well, I guess we still don't know Pittoo's role either, but at least we know he's in the game.

Though Medusa got all of the press, and was the villain for more of Uprising and Kid Icarus in general than...anyone, really. I really don't think Sakurai's bias extends so far as to ignore what does and doesn't matter to the series. We could have gotten a Waddle Dee and Kracko in Brawl and never gotten King Dedede or Meta Knight, but that wasn't the case. I am pretty sure his bias would extend only to adding another Kid Icarus character, and he would actually use something more tangible like importance to the franchise as a tiebreaker.

I think that's pretty much why I liked Medusa in the game and not much else. Medusa was a serious character who didn't like to goof around (and didn't even know why or how she came back to the living, so she replied in a realistic manner when confronted by the topic), and frankly, in a Smash Bros. setting, while Palutena and Pit are having fun in the game, Medusa just wants to beat the living crap out of them. You can get pretty bored with goofballs and hams.

The thing that does scare me about Medusa is the bias Sakurai can have with characters. Like I said... he prioritized Hades as the primary antagonist and tried to make him all "cool" and everything while he's being a total monster, and I thought Hades was very lame for those reasons. So, he may try to make Hades the playable and Medusa a boss. Of course, I think even he knows better than this and feels that the three central characters to the franchise should get their chance to do battle against one another, which will help Medusa.

It didn't get released in Japan until right before Uprising came out.
This doesn't mean it was never released, by the way.

She still is the threat that take 9 chapters to destroy, and makes that surprise appearance during the final boss fight.

I also think that bringing another villain was a good thing. If Medusa was not fought during chapter 9, her "arc" would be too long. If she was fought, but not defeated once and for all, there would have been a "Team Rocket" effect. This, and Pit would suddenly bother more about Viridi, and it would make even less sense (I still find weird that Hades is the biggest threat ever, yet, it's kinda "we are gods, let's goof around". I liked Uprising's comical tone, but... Hades have his flaws, this is the biggest one).

Regarding Hades, I feel like for the most part he was just distracting everyone from all his awful actions. Like, it wasn't until Dark Pit went to the underworld to heal Pit's wings that everyone realized what Hades had been up to the entire time and after that is when he becomes priority threat number 1.

Wondering, if Kid Icarus doesn't make it to three reps, what would you guys want Medusa to be? Assist Trophy? Boss?

If Kid Icarus didn't have a second newcomer, I'd be disappointed and would hope we at least get a nice boss out of it I guess, instead of making Medusa just an assist trophy. The series antagonist deserves a little better than a mid-match item.
