Someone who's knowledgeable on the subject should start a Global Warming thread. I tend to stay away from that debate since I don't really know enough to make a judgment one way or the other on it, and I want to know which side is ludicrous and which side I can jump on.

As far as I can see, it's pretty clear that the scientists are in consensus that mankind is affecting the environment, and, even if we completely stopped all emissions right now, would continue to affect the environment for some time to come. However, I too am not knowledgeable of the science and evidence behind it, so I too generally stay away from the debate as well.

Debate Hall, naturally. I doubt any of the noobies know anything relevant about Global Warming. The point is to present it without any bull or spin.

I don't know it'd be interesting to see in the PG. It's an issue where you really have to have sources to back yourself, an important part of a lot of debates that you don't see as often...

There isn't any debate when it comes to global warming or whether humans are contributing to it. The earth is warming, and humans are a significant factor. That is a scientific issue, not a debate.

I think you should try and stick to issues that are actually debates.

The debate on global warming should really be about what measures and means we can come about to addressing it and, hopefully, lessening its impact.

Yeah, what should be done to slow the process...like the Carbon Dioxide Emissions laws etc.

Yeah, that sounds like something worth debating. Merits or detriments of things like the Kyoto Protocol, or whether things like emissions credits/emissions trading are good ideas or not.

I don't know enough about them though to post a whole thread about them though...I had to do a small debate about it a few years ago but I don't really remember anything.

Yeah, like, also, whether ethanol fuel is actually any better. There is also, what seems like, the very interesting topic of whether we should engage in geoengineering to combat global warming, and to what degree we should if we do.

Again, I admit that Global Warming is one of the few topics I know next to nothing about, but is it really the big deal everyone makes of it? Exactly how significant a rise in temperature are we causing compared to the normal cyclic fluctuations that happen to the Earth every few thousand years or so?

I have no doubt that the **** we're skewering the atmosphere with doesn't help, but on the flipside not too long ago people were getting up in arms about a second ice age.

I always used to get kind of antsy whenever I would hear anyone take an extreme position on it, especially conservative idiots that completely deny its existence. Which I knew was a load of bull--but I never really knew whether or not it was as big a deal as people like Al Gore make it out to be.

Did you take a look at some of those emission graphs for the last few years compared with way back in the 50's and 60's?

I've been a proponent for it for a long time.

Even if by some freak chance of occurrence that Global warming was bull crap it would still be in our best interest to prevent it.

Which is still a perfectly legitimate concern btw, global dimming is an important factor in our ecology, it however is not the dominant effect at the time, so it's mostly spoken of in terms of it's side effects (such as acid rain) and it's slowing effect on global warming.

Personally, I find it hard to believe that anyone can think that a very real and dangerous effect was hyped makes global warming any less creditable.

One thing that i have noticed in the debate hall is that we get topics but we don't get into heated debates. Our topics usually die off in a few days. We need to actually debate.

we should try to avoid debate isolating between us PG people to an extent...it's good for them to see how heated a debate gets but they need to stay involved.
