Guides were useful in the 90s.
Without giudes, online or otherwise, you'd never know how the EV system works. Ever. In Gen 1 and 2 you can get the best stats ever without paying attention to EV's, or as they were known back then, Stat Exp. Ever since RSE, it's been a different story.
There are also other games made past 2000 that have a ridiculous amount of guide dang it. Final Fantasy X2 has a moronic amount of easily miss-able one time cues, scenes, and triggers that net you all the good stuff and the true ending. That was the first game I looked up guides for and printed things like the Mission and Garment Grid FAQs, and I'm glad I did because I would never have gotten the Iron Duke, Best Ending, or Mascot Dressphere otherwise.
FF12 also has the Zodiac spear, which thanks to programming boo boos, requires you to NOT open unspecified chests throughout the game world to have a realisticish chance of obtaining such a powerful sphere.
Anyway, smash 4's controls are awkward to me, but not awful. Thank goodness I can put L to shield and R to grab. I miss the C-stick... but not that much. I can manage without it, but that may be because I grew up on Melee's single player modes, where the C-stick is not a thing.
