So, it felt like I was watching a sequel to Brawl. I know its not finished yet, but I'm at least happy for fans of Brawl that they got a sequel to the game they loved. I'm glad Nintendo acknowledged the competitive scene and put this tournament on and are actively trying to balance the game.
That being said watching the tournament decreased my hype level. Everything still feels really ...Brawl. Which is fine for fans of the game, and it looks great for everyone who wants new characters, stages and items. They've clearly put a lot of work into putting tonnes of wackiness into the game. It's just...I feel like they could have put the engine from Melee into the game, and it would have pleased everyone. Casual fans wouldn't know the difference. At least this won't replace Melee. Though I think Brawl's days are numbered (only because the new game seems to play so similar).
Its pre-emptive but it looks to me that combos aren't really a thing anymore in this game. What's great about Melee and P:M is they have such a free-flowing combo system, that's reactionary, and quick. There's no imputing a combo and watching it play out, its reacting to your opponents DI and knowing the spacing of your moves. Where the sour and sweet spots are so you can either get more damage or knock them off the stage. Its beautiful to watch how creative people can be with their combos.
Sorry for my rambling. I know many of you have come from a Brawl background, and that's perfectly fine. I'm happy so many people are excited for this game, I really am. It's just no longer the game I fell in love with. Its something else now.
