Out of curiosity, I decided to look up some actual statistics on Brawl sales, Melee sales, and sales of their respective systems.
Since its release in late 2006, the Wii has sold about 101.2 million units as of the end of September. By contrast, from its release in late 2001, the Gamecube sold about 21.74 million units until it was discontinued in 2007.
Brawl is the Wii's 9th best-selling game, while Melee was Gamecube's #1. As of March 31, Brawl has sold 12.14 million copies worldwide since its 2008 release, while Melee sold over 7 million copies as of March 10, 2008 since its 2001 release, which is both a fairly comparable sales timespan, and the latest sales stat we have for Melee, probably due to its discontinuation.
These statistics in mind, we can see that about 12% of Wii consoles had a Brawl disc to go along with it, while about 32% of Gamecube consoles had a Melee disc attached.
That means that Melee only sold a bit under 60% as well as Brawl did, but it did so with about 21% the install base.
I'm not gonna draw conclusions about this here, but given all the talk about sales and success going on, I figured some hard numbers might help to have an actual discussion.
