So Medicre and I were talking about how it was really disappointing that we never finished DWYP. (I take a lot of responsiblity over this haha) And I brought up how it would be informative, and exciting to watch if we had every other month two of the premier debaters in the debate hall debate a very popular subject in which both sides can win the argument. We have some very skilled debaters, and I think having a debate between two very skilled debaters, who have very opposite views on a subject would be educational for the new and old debaters alike.

Here are my thoughts on how it would be run. We'd have a stickied debate that only the two debaters chosen could post in. Then, we'd have another topic that would be open to all DH members to express their thoughts. A lot of new debaters don't know the essentials of debate, and I think this would be great for the newbies who are working their way up from the Proving Ground to see how one debates.

This is far from happening, but I'd like to see what the general opinion of the DH is, and even to see if any of the veterans would like to participate in this.

I think this is a good idea. Though a debate where both sides have an equal chance of winning will limit the choices a bit, as manhunter said.

How will judging be done? Since the people who have posting rights here know what they're talking about, will it be a community vote or will it carry the same style of judging that DWYP did?

There doesn't even have to be a "winner" decided upon, the way I envision it. "Winners" of formal debates are always contrived and arbitrary anyway. As I have said numerous times, debates are rarely for those involved, but rather the casual readers.

It could simply be in an "exhibition" style, where we just take two good debaters and say "you two go at it for a while" and see what happens.

I guess I shouldn't have used the word winner. I just meant that take a debate where both sides have good points. We wouldn't be debating to see who wins per se, just debating to show a good debate for new and old members. Plus, a good debate is always fun to read, and we will still have it open to all members, and people can say their thoughts on the debate in a seperate thread.

This sounds like it would be a great idea; naturally it would be a little more casual and less drawn out than DWYP, seeing as how there's only 2 people actually taking part in the debate at a given time.

I already have some ideas for a possible topic, although only if Alt would be interested in going rounds with me on Copyright / Patent laws.

This would be too good. I like to read a lot of the topics in here and having a premium debate would keep me and several other readers very interested.

Hey I can leech some topics from the NFL's (that's National Forensics League, not football) history of topics. I can get yes/no policy topics, more in-depth policy making topics, or moral/philosophical topics. I was actually just going to put a bunch out as threads, but if you'd use them as topics in this type of debate, maybe I should hang on to them? Let me know.

Hm, this sounds like a great idea.
I would personally prefer to see it as a more formal debate, as I think I have much to learn :p.
I mean, most debates in the DH are quite informal and people just post their opinions and we go on tangents, lol.
Of course, this just makes me feel like the Debate Hall is going to get closer to Debate.com.

So when are we going to go through with this?

The PG mod program just started, so hopefully the n00bs become more active and we can get on with this.

I mentioned it to CK, just waiting for a response. He's going to look into it though.

Philosophy is so fun to debate. xD
Seriously, best thing. Of course, I like talking of other topics too.
Personally though, I hate real life debate classes as I feel they're too heavily influenced by other topics aside from actually... well... debating. o_O

My weekend was ridiculously busy, so I didn't get a chance to talk to CK about this, but theres a chance I'll have a little time tomorrow, if I can get a jump on my project. Glad to see this is supported by everyone.

framework debates are good, as long as there are articulated warrants...but random bull**** about the nature of good and evil or why is there sin is the most ******** form of argumentation.

I believe that if we do this, there should be no debates over religion. They too often hit a stalemate because rarely are people going to change their religious stance over a debate.

I strongly support this. But, that's because I always approach a debate in hopes to learn or teach, not argue.

This sounds like a fantastic idea.

That's like saying "You can't have an intelligent conversation on *****/******." I CAN'T WRITE THE P WORD?!

BULL****!! :D
