Just making sure you beat the basics into yourself is the most important. With good fundamentals the advanced stuff becomes even more easy.

As far as the cpu thing (now that I have a TV that works properly, lol.) outside of level 1, I say level 6 as well. They play a basic rush-down type of person, and they also powershield a LOT. It's just good to practice what you've been applying to a cpu that does more than just walk toward you.


Other than that...I can only say what's been suggested. Eventually you'll do it so often that it'll become second nature. Come up with your own fun ways to practice, though. The key word is "FUN". I also started using the Handicap method with Ganon. It's like playing the "Don't get hit" game, but you need to get damage in quickly, too. Challenge yourself in fun ways. ^_^

I honestly don't think the practice will be fun, unless improving and becoming more technical is your definition of fun.

its that nity gritty **** that gets you better.

lvl 1 DK, damage ratio 0.5, handicap on. This is the setting I use to practice techniques that require different timings to compensate for hit lag. With these settings, here are some of the important things you should be practicing.

-Doubleshine consistently (Only two shines are truly necessary when you're doing shield pressure. Of course, if you can do 50 then by all means go for it. Practically speaking, you know why its good and why overdoing tech skill can lead to failure. I find that doing two doesn't lead to as much failure, and allows you to be more liberal with your shield game.)
***Practice WDing AND SH nair/dair/bair out of the 2nd shine.


-Doubleshine JC grab

-JC Nair shines. (vary your nair timings. Try alternating between early nair and late nair to better understanding how to apply both technically, then commit them to memory so you can choose between either for you preferred choice of shield pressure.)

-JC Bair shines

-Full distanced waveshines (you should be able to pass through DK if you get the full distanced versions. Shine on one side, WD through his body, shine, WD back through his body. This REALLY helps when you're waveshining to usmash or grab in general. Practicing like this has allowed me to efficiently waveshine usmash Marth / Mario / Doc in either direction off a drill)




Training mode Vs. Jigglypuff / Marth / Sheik

-Its always a good idea to take these characters into the lab and practice those difficult combo timings at different percents with varied d.i. Learn how to:

uair jiggs at 70 and above
SH nair Sheik low percents (15%ish)
uthrow uair Marth if he d.i.s behind you.

Look at the combo meter and grind until you have the timing down. If you're having problems getting out of your uthrow fast enough, use this tip that KirbyKaze gave me. Watch for when Fox puts his hands down after shooting his laser. That's the perfect time to start dashing for your jump + uair. To make the training dummy d.i. away, set it to evade, and grab them while they are trying to escape. Grabbing them right at the ledge while they are set to evade, will make it so that they d.i. behind you. Great for practicing the techniques mentioned.

i also just thought up the idea of starting a smash blog so i can record my progress, one of the main ways i get better is by articulating my thoughts so i can sift through them later and look for any problems

and another thing i was wondering. how much time/effort do you technical people devote during a friendly to working on a new technique? like doubleshining in shield pressure, or approaching with wavelands or whatever. i think this is an area where i could really improve in (implementing specific things into my game), it seems like i fall into routines too often, and that holds me back a lot

This is good, more often then not the reason you can't pull something off consistently/at all is because of an error you systematically repeat. Analysing what you're doing and hence what you're doing wrong usually fixes it.

As much time/effort as you feel you need to incorporate something effectively, as any tech skill is useless if you can't use it appropriately.

it also seems like the handicapped computer helps a LOT
it gets your timing down, but another thing i noticed is that it helps with the 'intimidation factor'

sometimes i'll get scared playing a real opponent (or at just random times) and my fingers will lock up, or movement that i have down normally goes to ****. against a handicapped computer (and i think level 8/9 computers, which i'm about to test), it's like 'oh man there's a scary-azz ganon over there who will jab me if i mess this up.'

well long story short it gets your tech skill a lot better, and helps a LOT when it comes to real life applications (or so it seems).

about that blog, if i do it at all it'll probably be later (after i get a job).

your much better off doing motion sensor bomb, falco + fox's target text have like ridiculous hitstun so the timing window is different

I've been doing this for the past week, my Falco has gotten much much better thanks Raynex.
